Abstract

Systems and methods are disclosed for handing off media content. A media player client receives a request to transfer a media stream, which is playing on a first media device, to a second media device. In response to determining that the second media device comprises a larger screen than the first media device, the media player content determines, based on the genre and resolution of the media stream data, whether the media stream data can be transferred, from the first media device to the second media device.

Claims (48)

1 . A method comprising:

receiving, at a first playback position, a request to transfer display of a content item from a first device to a second device, wherein a media stream comprises the content item;

accessing metadata comprising a plurality of playback position markers within the content item, wherein each playback position marker corresponds to a respective position different from the first playback position;

in response to the request to transfer the display of the content item from the first device to the second device:

continuing to display the content item at the first device after the first playback position until a next playback position marker of the plurality of playback position markers is reached;

automatically ceasing the display of the content item at the first device based on determining that the current playback position has reached the next playback position marker included in the metadata of the content item; and

automatically causing the second device to begin display of the content item from the next playback position marker included in the metadata of the content item.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of playback position markers comprises a moment of silence marker indicating a completion of a scene or a dialogue.

3 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining that the metadata indicates that a volume of the content item decreases by a threshold percentage relative to an average volume of the content item.

4 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

while establishing a network connection between a server and the second device:

transmitting local data stored at the first device to the second device, wherein the local data comprises portions of data of the content item, until the network connection between the server and the second device is complete.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the metadata comprises a plurality of segments, wherein each segment represents a scene in the content item.

6 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the metadata comprises characteristics of each segment of the plurality of segments, wherein the characteristics comprise subtitle information, cast information, and genre classification.

7 . A system comprising:

communications circuitry configured to:

receive, at a first playback position, a request to transfer display of a content item from a first device to a second device, wherein a media stream comprises the content item;

access metadata comprising a plurality of playback position markers within the content item, wherein each playback position marker corresponds to a respective position different from the first playback position;

control circuitry configured to:

in response to the request to transfer the display of the content item from the first device to the second device:

continue to display the content item at the first device after the first playback position until a next playback position marker of the plurality of playback position markers is reached;

automatically cease the display of the content item at the first device based on determining that the current playback position has reached the next playback position marker included in the metadata of the content item; and

automatically cause the second device to begin display of the content item from the next playback position marker included in the metadata of the content item.

8 . The system of claim 7 , wherein the plurality of playback position markers comprises a moment of silence marker indicating a completion of a scene or a dialogue.

9 . The system of claim 7 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

determine that the metadata indicates that a volume of the content item decreases by a threshold percentage relative to an average volume of the content item.

10 . The system of claim 7 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

while establishing a network connection between a server and the second device:

transmit local data stored at the first device to the second device, wherein the local data comprises portions of data of the content item, until the network connection between the server and the second device is complete.

11 . The system of claim 7 , wherein the metadata comprises a plurality of segments, wherein each segment represents a scene in the content item.

12 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the metadata comprises characteristics of each segment of the plurality of segments, wherein the characteristics comprise subtitle information, cast information, and genre classification.

13 . A non-transitory computer readable medium comprising:

instructions that when executed by control circuitry cause the control circuitry to:

receive, at a first playback position, a request to transfer display of a content item from a first device to a second device, wherein a media stream comprises the content item;

access metadata comprising a plurality of playback position markers within the content item, wherein each playback position marker corresponds to a respective position different from the first playback position;

in response to the request to transfer the display of the content item from the first device to the second device:

continue to play the content item at the first device after the first playback position until a next playback position marker of the plurality of playback position markers is reached;

automatically cease the display of the content item at the first device based on determining that the current playback position has reached the next playback position marker included in the metadata of the content item; and

automatically cause the second device to begin display of the content item from the next playback position marker included in the metadata of the content item.

14 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 13 , wherein the plurality of playback position markers comprises a moment of silence marker indicating a completion of a scene or a dialogue.

15 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 13 , further comprising instructions that cause the control circuitry to:

determine that the metadata indicates that a volume of the content item decreases by a threshold percentage relative to an average volume of the content item.

16 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 13 , further comprising instructions that when executed by the control circuitry cause the control circuitry to:

while establishing a network connection between a server and the second device:

transmit local data stored at the first device to the second device, wherein the local data comprises portions of data of the content item, until the network connection between the server and the second device is complete.

17 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 13 , wherein the metadata comprises a plurality of segments, wherein each segment represents a scene in the content item.

18 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 17 , wherein the metadata comprises characteristics of each segment of the plurality of segments, wherein the characteristics comprise subtitle information, cast information, and genre classification.
