Abstract

In one embodiment of the present disclosure, an antenna assembly includes a patch antenna array including an upper patch antenna layer, a lower patch antenna layer, and a spacer therebetween, wherein the spacer includes a plurality of apertures defined by cell walls, wherein the each aperture aligns with an upper patch antenna element and a lower patent antenna element from the patch antenna array.

Claims (29)

1. An antenna assembly, comprising:

a housing including a first housing portion and a second housing portion, wherein the first housing portion is a radome portion;

an antenna array disposed within the housing, the antenna array including an antenna layer having a plurality of antenna elements;

a first spacer disposed between the radome portion and the antenna array, wherein the first spacer includes a plurality of apertures defined by cell walls between adjacent apertures and wherein each aperture of the first spacer aligns with an antenna element from the antenna layer; and

a second spacer disposed between the antenna array and the second housing portion, wherein the second spacer includes a plurality of apertures defined by cell walls between adjacent apertures, wherein each aperture of the second spacer aligns with an antenna element from the antenna layer.

2. The antenna assembly of claim 1 , wherein the antenna layer is a first antenna layer, wherein the antenna array includes a second antenna layer, and wherein the second antenna layer is spaced apart from the first antenna layer such that the second spacer is disposed between the first antenna layer and the second antenna layer.

3. The antenna assembly of claim 2 , wherein the second antenna layer includes a plurality of antenna elements, and wherein each aperture of the second spacer aligns with an antenna element from the second antenna layer.

4. The antenna assembly of claim 1 , wherein a center of each antenna element is substantially equally spaced from a center of its adjacent antenna elements, and wherein a center of each of the cell walls of the first spacer is substantially equidistant from the center of each antenna element.

5. The antenna assembly of claim 1 , wherein the cell walls of the first spacer form a honeycomb pattern.

6. The antenna assembly of claim 5 , wherein the cell walls of the second spacer form a honeycomb pattern that aligns with the honeycomb pattern of the first spacer.

7. The antenna assembly of claim 1 , wherein the cell walls of the first spacer have a first height and the cell walls of the second spacer have a second height, and wherein the first height is different than the second height.

8. The antenna assembly of claim 7 , wherein the first height is greater than the second height.

9. The antenna assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first and/or the second spacer has a thermal conductivity value of greater than 0.35 W/m-K.

10. The antenna assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first and/or the second spacer has a dielectric constant of less than 3.0.

11. An antenna assembly, comprising:

a radome portion forming at least a portion of a housing for the antenna assembly, the radome portion including a first spacer having a plurality of apertures defined by cell walls between adjacent apertures;

an antenna layer disposed adjacent the first spacer of the radome portion, wherein the antenna layer includes a plurality of antenna elements, and wherein each aperture of the first spacer aligns with an antenna element from the patch antenna layer; and

a second spacer disposed adjacent the antenna layer, wherein the second spacer includes a plurality of apertures defined by cell walls between adjacent apertures, wherein each aperture of the second spacer aligns with an antenna element from the antenna layer, wherein a center of each antenna element of the antenna layer is substantially equally spaced from a center of its adjacent antenna elements, and wherein a center of each of the cell walls of the first spacer is substantially equidistant from the center of each antenna element.

12. The antenna assembly of claim 11 , wherein the antenna layer is a first antenna layer, the antenna assembly further comprising a second antenna layer, wherein the second antenna layer is positioned adjacent the second spacer such that the second spacer is disposed between the first antenna layer and the second antenna layer.

13. The antenna assembly of claim 12 , wherein the second antenna layer includes a plurality of antenna elements, and wherein each aperture of the second spacer aligns with an antenna element from the second antenna layer.

14. The antenna assembly of claim 11 , wherein the cell walls of the first spacer form a honeycomb pattern.

15. The antenna assembly of claim 14 , wherein the cell walls of the second spacer form a honeycomb pattern that aligns with the honeycomb pattern of the first spacer.

16. The antenna assembly of claim 11 , wherein the cell walls of the first spacer have a first height and the cell walls of the second spacer have a second height, and wherein the first height is different than the second height.

17. The antenna assembly of claim 16 , wherein the first height is greater than the second height.

18. The antenna assembly of claim 11 , wherein the first and/or the second spacer has a thermal conductivity value of greater than 0.35 W/m-K.

19. An antenna assembly, comprising:

an antenna array including a first antenna layer and a second antenna layer spaced apart from the first antenna layer, wherein the first antenna layer and the second antenna layer each include a plurality of antenna elements;

a first spacer disposed adjacent the first antenna layer, wherein the first spacer includes a plurality of apertures defined by cell walls between adjacent apertures, and wherein each aperture of the first spacer aligns with an antenna element from the first and second antenna layers; and

a second spacer disposed between the first and second antenna layers, wherein the second spacer includes a plurality of apertures defined by cell walls between adjacent apertures, wherein each aperture of the second spacer aligns with an antenna element from the first patch antenna layer, an antenna element from the second patch antenna layer, and an aperture from the first spacer, wherein a center of each antenna element of the first patch antenna layer is substantially equally spaced from a center of its adjacent antenna elements, and wherein a center of each of the cell walls of the second spacer is substantially equidistant from the center of each antenna element of the first patch antenna.
