Claims (42)

1. A wheelchair comprising:

a frame;

a pair of drive wheels supporting the frame;

first and second front casters;

first and second rear casters;

first and second rear caster pivot arms coupled to the frame at a first and second pivot connections;

first and second rear caster pivot arm stops, each comprising first and second engagement surfaces and a gap therebetween;

a bar having a first portion within the gap of the first stop and a second portion within the gap of the second stop, wherein the bar is pivotably coupled to the frame, and wherein relative movement between the first and second rear pivot arms is limited by the bar, gap, and the first and second engagement surfaces.

2. The wheelchair of claim 1 wherein the first and second rear caster pivot arm stops are affixed to the first and second rear caster pivot arms, respectively.

3. The wheelchair of claim 1 wherein the first and second rear caster pivot arm stops comprise a recessed portion having the first and second engagement surfaces and the gap.

4. The wheelchair of claim 1 wherein the gap is disposed between the first and second engagement surfaces.

5. The wheelchair of claim 1 wherein the bar is pivotably coupled to the frame at a common pivot axis with the first and second rear caster pivot arms.

6. The wheelchair of claim 1 wherein the bar comprises a body having the first and second portions on opposite ends of the body.

7. The wheelchair of claim 1 further comprising an elongate element connected to the bar and a biasing element disposed between the elongate element and the first rear caster pivot arm.

8. The wheelchair of claim 1 further comprising an elongate element connected to the bar and a biasing element disposed between the elongate element and the second rear caster pivot arm.

9. The wheelchair of claim 1 further comprising first and second elongate elements connected to the bar and a first biasing element disposed between the first elongate element and the first rear caster pivot arm and a second biasing element disposed between the second elongate element and the second rear caster pivot arm.

10. The wheelchair of claim 1 wherein the first and second rear caster pivot arm stops pivot with the first and second rear pivot arms, respectively.

11. A wheelchair comprising:

a frame;

a pair of drive wheels supporting the frame;

first and second front casters;

first and second rear casters;

first and second rear caster pivot arms coupled to the frame at first and second pivot connections;

first and second stops, each comprising a recess having first and second engagement surfaces and a gap therebetween;

a bar having a first portion within the gap of the first stop and a second portion within the gap of the second stop, wherein the bar is pivotably coupled to the frame, and wherein relative movement between the first and second rear pivot arms is limited by the bar, gap, and the first and second engagement surfaces.

12. The wheelchair of claim 11 wherein the first and second stops each comprise a body member having the recess.

13. The wheelchair of claim 11 wherein the first and second stops each comprise a body member having the recess and wherein the body member is affixed to one of the rear pivot arms to pivot with the rear pivot arm.

14. The wheelchair of claim 11 further comprising first and second elongate elements connected to the bar and a first biasing element disposed between the first elongate element and the first rear caster pivot arm and a second biasing element disposed between the second elongate element and the second rear caster pivot arm.

15. The wheelchair of claim 11 wherein the first and second rear caster pivot arm stops pivot with the first and second rear pivot arms, respectively.

16. The wheelchair of claim 11 wherein the bar is pivotably connected to the frame at a third pivot connection that is coaxial with the first and second pivot connections.

17. A wheelchair comprising:

a frame means;

drive wheel means supporting the frame means;

first and second front caster means;

first and second rear caster means;

first and second rear caster pivot arm means coupled to the frame means at first and second pivot connection means;

first and second stop means, each comprising a recess means having first and second engagement means and a gap therebetween;

a bar means having a first portion within the gap of the first stop means and a second portion within the gap of the second stop means, wherein the bar means is pivotably coupled to the frame means, and wherein relative movement between the first and second rear pivot arm means is limited by the bar means, gap, and the first and second engagement means.

18. The wheelchair of claim 17 further comprises a biasing means between the bar means and the first and second rear pivot arm means.

19. The wheelchair of claim 17 further comprising a sensing means and a stabilizing means and wherein the sensing means senses movement of at least one of the first and second rear caster pivot arm means to actuate the stabilizing means to limit vertical movement of the first and second front caster means.

20. The wheelchair of claim 17 further comprising a stabilizing means to limit movement of the first and second front caster means when the frame means moves relative to the first and second rear caster pivot arm means.

21. The wheelchair of claim 17 further comprising a sensing means having an elongate member connected to the bar means and pivotable with the bar means.
