Iron compositions and methods of making and using the same
The present invention involves a novel aqueous iron composition. The aqueous iron composition includes iron sucrose and bicarbonate. The aqueous iron composition of the invention exhibits enhanced renal protective effects relative to conventional iron sucrose compositions.
1. An aqueous iron pharmaceutical composition comprising:
iron sucrose;
bicarbonate; and
a pharmaceutically acceptable aqueous carrier,
wherein the iron sucrose is present in pharmaceutically effective amount for providing a protective effect to a patient's kidney, the iron being present in both iron (II) and iron (Ill) form, the pharmaceutical composition has a pH greater than 9, a concentration of iron (II) of 0.05% w/v to 0.41% w/v, and the iron sucrose has a Mw according to GPC of between 33,000 and 38,000 Daltons.
2. The aqueous iron composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition has a specific gravity between 1.135 and 1.165 at 20° C.
3. The aqueous iron composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition has a concentration of iron (II) of 0.10% w/v to 0.20% w/v.
4. The aqueous iron composition of claim 1 , wherein the pH is within the range of 10.1 to 10.4.
