Abstract

Spacecraft servicing devices or pods and related methods may be configured to be deployed from a carrier spacecraft and include at least one spacecraft servicing component configured to perform at least one servicing operation on the target spacecraft. The spacecraft servicing devices may be configured to be transported from an initial orbit to another orbit after the spacecraft servicing device is deployed from the carrier spacecraft.

Claims (40)

1. A method of servicing a spacecraft, the method comprising:

delivering a pod at an initial orbit that is lower than a geosynchronous orbit where the spacecraft to be serviced is located;

transporting the pod from the initial orbit s to the geosynchronous orbit at a location proximate to the spacecraft;

coupling the pod to the spacecraft at the geosynchronous orbit, the coupling comprising securing a docking mechanism of the pod to the spacecraft with assistance of another coupling spacecraft that holds and positions the pod relative to the spacecraft, wherein the pod lacks the ability to independently rendezvous and dock with the spacecraft; and

after being coupled to the spacecraft, performing at least one spacecraft servicing operation.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising assisting the coupling of the pod to the spacecraft with an additional carrier spacecraft that is separate from both the pod and the spacecraft before the coupling.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising, after transporting the pod from the initial orbit substantially to the geosynchronous orbit:

collecting the pod with an additional carrier spacecraft;

approaching the spacecraft with the additional carrier spacecraft holding the pod that is separate from both the pod and the spacecraft before the coupling;

rendezvousing the additional carrier spacecraft holding the pod with the spacecraft; and

coupling the pod to the spacecraft with the additional carrier spacecraft.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein transporting the pod from the initial orbit to the geosynchronous orbit comprises driving the pod with a thruster assembly of the pod from the initial orbit to the geosynchronous orbit.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein transporting the pod from the initial orbit to the geosynchronous orbit comprises carrying the pod from the initial orbit to the geosynchronous orbit.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein performing the at least one spacecraft servicing operation comprises adjusting a position of the spacecraft with a thruster assembly of the pod.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein performing the at least one spacecraft servicing operation comprises delivering at least one spacecraft component to the spacecraft with the pod.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

deploying the pod from a carrier spacecraft at the initial orbit; and

performing the at least one spacecraft servicing operation comprising at least one life-extending servicing operation on the spacecraft with at least one spacecraft servicing component of the pod while the pod is coupled to the spacecraft.

9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising transporting the pod from the initial orbit to the geosynchronous orbit with a thruster assembly of the pod after the pod is deployed from the carrier spacecraft.

10. The method of claim 8 , further comprising configuring the pod to lack one or more prepositioning features.

11. The method of claim 8 , further comprising positioning the pod at a location adjacent the spacecraft using only mechanisms of another separate spacecraft.

12. The method of claim 8 , further comprising receiving data relating to the at least one of an orbit, a velocity, or a momentum of the spacecraft with a communication device of the pod, the data received from a transmission location remote from the pod.

13. The method of claim 12 , further comprising operating a thruster assembly of the pod responsive to the received data.

14. The method of claim 12 , further comprising receiving the data with the communication device via at least one of a wired or wireless communication channel.

15. A method of servicing a spacecraft, the method comprising:

positioning a pod at an initial orbit that is lower than a geosynchronous orbit where the spacecraft to be serviced is located;

transporting the pod from the initial orbit to the geosynchronous orbit at a location proximate to the spacecraft;

coupling the pod to the spacecraft comprising securing a docking mechanism of the pod to the spacecraft with assistance of another coupling spacecraft that holds and positions the pod relative to the spacecraft;

after being coupled to the spacecraft, performing at least one spacecraft servicing operation;

and

performing the at least one spacecraft servicing operation comprising at least one life-extending servicing operation on the spacecraft with at least one spacecraft servicing component of the pod while the pod is coupled to the spacecraft.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the pod lacks the ability to independently rendezvous and dock with the spacecraft.

17. The method of claim 15 , further comprising driving the pod from the initial orbit to the geosynchronous orbit with a thruster assembly of the pod.

18. A method of servicing a spacecraft, the method comprising:

positioning a spacecraft servicing pod from a carrier spacecraft at an orbit;

transporting the spacecraft servicing pod with a thruster assembly of the spacecraft servicing pod to a position proximate a target spacecraft;

coupling the spacecraft servicing pod to the target spacecraft with a docking mechanism of the spacecraft servicing pod with assistance of another coupling spacecraft that holds and positions the spacecraft servicing pod relative to the target spacecraft, wherein the spacecraft servicing pod requires the another coupling spacecraft to be docked to the target spacecraft; and

while the spacecraft servicing pod is coupled to the target spacecraft, performing at least one servicing operation on the target spacecraft with at least one spacecraft servicing component of the spacecraft servicing pod.

19. The method of claim 18 , further comprising delivering a payload carried by the spacecraft servicing pod to the target spacecraft.

20. The method of claim 18 , wherein the spacecraft servicing pod lacks the ability to independently rendezvous and dock with the target spacecraft.
