Abstract

Methods and systems are provided to display a real world event on a client device with avatars. Appropriate parameters for the real world event are provided and participants in the real world event are associated to avatars. As the real world event begins, a server is configured to provide information on the real world event to the client device, and the client device displays a representation of a virtual event using the avatars and the information received from the server.

Claims (46)

1. A method at a client device comprising:

sending a request to a server over a network, the request relating to at least one real-world event;

receiving, from the server, a confirmation message comprising information on a plurality of real-world participants of the at least one real-world event;

mapping each avatar from a plurality of avatars to a corresponding real-world participant of the real-world event;

displaying, on a display of the client device, a representation of a virtual environment including at least one of the plurality of avatars;

displaying, on the display of the client device, at least one virtual object within the virtual environment, each of the at least one virtual object having a virtual position within the virtual environment;

receiving, from the server, update messages related to the at least one real-world event, the update messages causing a movement for the at least one of the plurality of avatars within the virtual environment based on movement of the corresponding plurality of real-world participants in the real-world environment; and

when the position information for a first avatar of the plurality of avatars corresponds to the virtual position of the at least one virtual object, awarding the virtual object to the first avatar.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving from a user interface of the client device, user input indicating a bet, the bet comprising at least one condition relating to the at least one virtual object and the first avatar.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one virtual object is assigned a random virtual position within the virtual environment.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one virtual object is assigned a predetermined position within the virtual environment.

5. The method of claim 2 , wherein odds for the bet are determined based on the virtual position of the at least one virtual object.

6. The method of claim 2 , wherein odds for the bet are determined based on a position of a real-world participant of the real-world event mapped to the first avatar.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one virtual object is displayed as a virtual gemstone or a virtual treasure.

8. The method of claim 2 , wherein awarding the virtual object to the first avatar comprises awarding virtual points to the first avatar.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the at least one condition comprises the first avatar being awarded a threshold number of virtual points.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: removing the at least one virtual object from the virtual environment after the at least one virtual object has been awarded.

11. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: keeping the at least one virtual object in the virtual environment after the at least one virtual object has been awarded.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the virtual position of the at least one virtual object is based on a location of an event within the real-world event.

13. The method of claim 2 , further comprising updating the presentation of the at least one virtual object or the first avatar based on odds for the bet.

14. A client device, comprising:

a processor;

a communications subsystem; and

a display;

wherein the processor, communications subsystem, and display, cooperate to:

send a request to a server over a network, the request relating to at least one real-world event;

receive, from the server, a confirmation message comprising information on a plurality of real-world participants of the at least one real-world event;

map each avatar from a plurality of avatars to a corresponding real-world participant of the real-world event;

display, on a display of the client device, a representation of a virtual environment including at least one of the plurality of avatars;

display, on the display of the client device, at least one virtual object within the virtual environment, each of the at least one virtual object having a virtual position within the virtual environment;

receive, from the server, update messages related to the at least one real-world event, the update messages causing a movement for the at least one of the plurality of avatars within the virtual environment based on movement of the corresponding plurality of real-world participants in the real-world environment; and

when the position information for a first avatar of the plurality of avatars corresponds to the virtual position of the at least one virtual object, award the virtual object to the first avatar.

15. The client device of claim 14 , wherein the processor, communications subsystem, and display, further cooperate to receive from a user interface of the client device, user input indicating a bet, the bet comprising at least one condition relating to the at least one virtual object and the first avatar.

16. The client device of claim 14 , wherein the at least one virtual object is assigned a random virtual position within the virtual environment.

17. The client device of claim 15 , wherein odds for the bet are determined based on the virtual position of the at least one virtual object.

18. The client device of claim 14 , wherein odds for the bet are determined based on a position of the real-world participant of the real-world event mapped to the first avatar.

19. The client device of claim 15 , wherein the processor, communications subsystem, and display, further cooperate to update the presentation of the at least one virtual object or the first avatar based on odds for the bet.

20. A non-transitory computer readable medium having stored thereon executable code for execution by a processor of a client device, the executable code comprising instructions for:

sending a request to a server over a network, the request relating to at least one real-world event;

receiving, from the server, a confirmation message comprising information on a plurality of real-world participants of the at least one real-world event;

mapping each avatar from a plurality of avatars to a corresponding real-world participant of the real-world event;

displaying, on a display of the client device, a representation of a virtual environment including at least one of the plurality of avatars

displaying, on the display of the client device, at least one virtual object within the virtual environment, each of the at least one virtual object having a virtual position within the virtual environment;

receiving, from the server, update messages related to the at least one real-world event, the update messages causing a movement for the at least one of the plurality of avatars within the virtual environment based on movement of the corresponding plurality of real-world participants in the real-world environment; and

when the position information for a first avatar of the plurality of avatars corresponds to the virtual position of the at least one virtual object, awarding the virtual object to the first avatar.
