Abstract

An electronic sitter management system coupled to patient surveillance network having a plurality of video cameras, each camera transmitting a stream of surveillance video of a respective patient room. The sitter management system includes at least one sitter management device and a plurality of sitter devices. Each device being assigned a plurality of patient rooms and capable of receiving a plurality of streams of surveillance video for the corresponding plurality of patient rooms and simultaneously displaying a plurality of video images of the corresponding plurality of patient rooms. Each device is also capable of transmitting sitter device availability information to the sitter management device. The sitter management device being capable of recognizing a sitter device being unavailable and reassigning the plurality of patient rooms previously assigned to the unavailable device to other of the plurality of sitter devices that are available.

Claims (35)

1. A method for monitoring patients in an electronic sitter system, the method comprising:

assigning, to a sitter device, a real-time patient surveillance video stream from a camera located in a patient room, the assignment being based at least in part on a correspondence between a specific need of a patient and an experience of a sitter corresponding to the sitter device;

receiving, at the sitter device, the real-time patient surveillance video stream;

displaying the real-time patient surveillance video stream at the sitter device;

detecting, by a motion detector device, motions within the real-time patient surveillance video stream;

discriminating, by the motion detector device, a patient motion from the detected motions; and

receiving, at the sitter device, an alert corresponding to the patient motion.

The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of assigning the real-time patient surveillance video stream based at least in part on the correspondence between the specific need of the patient and the experience of the sitter further comprises assigning the real-time patient surveillance video stream based at least in part on the correspondence between the specific need of the patient and at least one of skills, qualifications, and training of the sitter.

The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of assigning the real-time patient surveillance video stream further comprises assigning the real-time patient surveillance video stream based at least in part on availability of specialized equipment corresponding to the specific need of the patient, the specialized equipment comprising one or more of a heart defibrillator, vital signs monitor, resuscitator, or aspirator.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the specific need of the patient comprises one or more of a welfare criterion of the patient and a personal preference of the patient.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of assigning the real-time patient surveillance video stream is performed by a patient assignment component of the electronic sitter system.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of assigning the real-time patient surveillance video stream is performed by the sitter device based at least in part on a manual input received from a sitter by the sitter device.

7. The method of claim 1 further comprising providing at least one interactive control for a patient room that corresponds to the real-time patient surveillance video stream, the at least one interactive control including a patient chat function between the sitter device and the patient room.

8. The method of claim 1 further comprising predicting a patient fall based on the patient motion.

9. The method of claim 1 further comprising displaying, at the sitter device, information about the patient including at least a patient name, medical information, welfare criteria and personal preferences.

10. An electronic sitter system coupled to a patient surveillance network, the patient surveillance network comprising a video camera configured to capture and transmit a real-time patient surveillance video stream and a sensor for capturing data in a patient room, the video camera being located in a patient room and oriented toward an interior of the patient room, the electronic sitter system comprising:

a patient assignment component configured to assign, to a sitter device, the real-time patient surveillance video stream from the video camera, the assignment being based at least in part on a correspondence between a specific need of a patient and an experience of a sitter corresponding to the sitter device; and

a plurality of sitter devices, each sitter device being configured to:

receive the real-time patient surveillance video stream;

display the real-time patient surveillance video stream; and

receive an alert corresponding to a patient motion, the patient motion being

discriminated from motions detected within the real-time patient surveillance video stream.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein, the experience of the sitter comprises at least one of skills, qualifications, and training of the sitter.

The system of claim 10 , wherein the patient assignment component assigns the real-time patient surveillance video stream to the sitter device based at least in part on availability of specialized equipment corresponding to the specific need of the patient, the specialized equipment comprising one or more of a heart defibrillator, vital signs monitor, resuscitator, or aspirator.

13. The system of claim 10 , wherein the specific need of the patient comprises one or more of a welfare criterion of the patient and a personal preference of the patient.

The system of claim 10 , wherein the sitter device is configured to provide at least one interactive control for the patient room that corresponds to the real-time patient surveillance video stream, the at least one interactive control including a patient chat function between the sitter device and the patient room.

15. The system of claim 10 , wherein the sitter device is configured to predict a patient fall based on the patient motion.

16. The system of claim 10 , wherein the sitter device is configured to log events or actions of the patient corresponding to the patient room.

17. The system of claim 10 , wherein the sitter device is configured to display information about the patient including at least a patient name, medical information, welfare criteria and personal preferences.

18. A non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising instructions that, when executed by at least one processor of a sitter device, cause the at least one processor to:

receive a real-time patient surveillance video stream from a camera located in a patient room, the real-time patient surveillance video stream having been assigned to the sitter device based at least in part on a correspondence between a specific need of a patient and an experience of a sitter corresponding to the sitter device;

display the real-time patient surveillance video stream on the sitter device; and

receive an alert corresponding to a patient motion detected and discriminated from motions within the real-time patient surveillance video stream.

19. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 18 wherein the experience of the sitter comprises at least one of skills, qualifications, and training of the sitter.

20. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 18 wherein the specific need of the patient comprises one or more of a welfare criterion of the patient and a personal preference of the patient.
