Abstract

Devices and methods are discussed herein for protection from embolisms and microembolisms in a subject undergoing catheter-based intravascular procedures. The embolic protection devices have an expandable support frame comprising U-shaped members and leg members which facilitate proper placements in a defective valve annulus. The filtering devices expand in the vessels and allow blood flow to continue through the vessels, thereby catching and removing debris of the flowing blood. Also disclosed are embolic protection devices for use with a sutureless valve prosthesis which is implanted via catheter-based methods.

Claims (27)

1. A valve prosthesis with embolic protection, the valve prosthesis comprising:

a support frame;

a valve clasper coupled to the support frame via a filter sheet positioned therebetween, the valve clasper being movable relative to the support frame along a longitudinal axis between a nesting configuration during delivery and an engagement configuration during placement at a native valve; and

wherein the filter sheet is configured to permit blood flow and prevent passage of debris therethrough.

2. The valve prosthesis of claim 1 , wherein the filter sheet comprises a porous material.

3. The valve prosthesis of claim 2 , wherein the porous material comprises pores having a diameter greater than 50 μm.

4. The valve prosthesis of claim 1 , wherein the filter sheet is coupled to the support frame via a suture, a staple, a chemical bond, or an adhesive.

5. The valve prosthesis of claim 1 , wherein the filter sheet comprises a material selected from the group consisting of polyester monofilament mesh, Nylon monofilament mesh, screen printing mesh, nylon mesh, metallic wire mesh, and expanded polytetrafluoroethylene.

6. The valve prosthesis of claim 1 , wherein the filter is configured to provide embolic protection.

7. The valve prosthesis of claim 1 , wherein the support frame comprises a reversibly expandable material.

8. The valve prosthesis of claim 1 , wherein the support frame is expandable between the nesting configuration during delivery and the engagement configuration during placement at the native valve.

9. The valve prosthesis of claim 1 , wherein the valve clasper is serially positioned relative to the support frame along the longitudinal axis in the nesting configuration, such that both the valve clasper and the support frame provide a diameter which readily fits within a sheath or tube structure that can be advanced through vessel walls in the body while causing minimal or no damage to the vessel.

10. The valve prosthesis of claim 1 , wherein prior to a deployment of the support frame, the valve clasper is configured to move into a position which is concentric to the support frame.

11. The valve prosthesis of claim 1 , wherein the support frame is configured to be deployed such that a native valve leaflet is sandwiched between the external surface of the support frame and a U-shaped member of the valve clasper to secure the valve prosthesis within a native valve annulus.

12. A method to implant a valve prosthesis in a patient, the method comprising:

advancing the valve prosthesis, in a compact configuration, through a vessel of the patient, the valve prosthesis having a support frame and a valve clasper movably coupled to the support frame via a filter sheet;

permitting expansion of the valve clasper;

permitting expansion of the support frame within the valve clasper; and

permitting blood flow through the filter sheet to restrict passage of debris through the filter sheet.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the filter sheet comprises a porous material.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the filter sheet comprises pores having a diameter greater than 50 μm.

15. The method of claim 12 , further comprising coupling the filter sheet to the support frame and the valve clasper via a suture, a staple, a chemical bond or an adhesive.

16. The method of claim 12 , wherein the filter sheet comprises a material selected from the group consisting of polyester monofilament mesh, Nylon monofilament mesh, screen printing mesh, nylon mesh, metallic wire mesh, and expanded polytetrafluoroethylene.

17. The method of claim 12 , further comprising providing embolic protection via the filter sheet.

18. The method of claim 12 , further comprising advancing the valve prosthesis through the vessel of the patient in a sheath or tubular structure.

19. The method of claim 12 , further comprising delivering the valve prosthesis to an aortic valve or a mitral valve.

20. The method of claim 12 , wherein the advancing comprises advancing the valve prosthesis in a retrograde direction within the vessel.
