Abstract

Propylene and butene random copolymers are disclosed that have excellent stiffness properties and excellent transparency characteristics especially when combined with one or more nucleating agents. The propylene-butene copolymers can be made with different melt flow characteristics making them well suited for use in injection molding, blow molding and thermoforming applications.

Claims (29)

1 . A polymer composition comprising:

a propylene-butene copolymer comprising propylene as a primary monomer,

the propylene-butene copolymer containing butene in an amount from about 1% to about 12% by weight,

the polymer having a xylene soluble fraction of from about 1.0% to about 8.0% by weight,

the propylene-butene copolymer having a molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn) of greater than about 3.5;

a nucleating agent; and

wherein the polymer composition displays a haze at 1 mm of less than about 25% and wherein after thermal aging for 24 hours at 55° C., the haze increases by no more than about 30%.

2 . The polymer composition of claim 1 , wherein the polymer composition displays a haze at 1 mm of less than about 20%.

3 . The polymer composition of claim 1 , wherein after thermal aging for 24 hours at 55° C., the haze of the polymer composition increases by no more than about 25%.

4 . The polymer composition of claim 1 , wherein after thermal aging for 24 hours at 55° C., the haze of the polymer composition increases by no more than about 10%.

5 . The polymer composition of claim 1 , wherein the polymer has a xylene soluble fraction/butene content ratio of from about 0.3 to about 3.0.

6 . The polymer composition of claim 1 4 , wherein the nucleating agent comprises a nonitol.

7 . The polymer composition of claim 1 , wherein the polymer composition has a melt flow rate of from about 0.25 g/10 min to about 225 g/10 min.

8 . The polymer composition of claim 1 , wherein the polymer composition has a melt flow rate of from about 1 g/10 min to about 60 g/10 min.

9 . The polymer composition of claim 1 , wherein the polymer composition displays a flexural modulus of greater than about 1000 MPa, such as greater than about 1200 MPa.

10 . The polymer composition of claim 1 , wherein the propylene-butene copolymer is catalyzed in the presence of a non-phthalate based Ziegler-Natta catalyst.

11 . (canceled)

12 . The polymer composition of claim 1 , wherein the propylene-butene copolymer is present in the polymer composition in an amount greater than about 70% by weight.

13 . The polymer composition of claim 1 , wherein the propylene-butene copolymer contains butene in an amount from about 2% to about 8% by weight.

14 . The polymer composition of claim 13 , wherein the propylene-butene copolymer displays a heat distortion temperature of greater than about 75° C., and a melting point of from about 143° C. to about 155° C.

15 . (canceled)

16 . The polymer composition of claim 1 , wherein the propylene-butene copolymer has a xylene soluble content of from about 2% to about 6% by weight.

17 . The polymer composition of claim 1 further comprising at least one antioxidant and at least on acid scavenger.
