Abstract

Presented herein are methods, systems, devices, and computer-readable media for image management in image-guided medical procedures. Some embodiments herein allow a physician to use multiple instruments for a surgery and simultaneously provide image-guidance data for those instruments. Various embodiments disclosed herein provide information to physicians about procedures they are performing, the devices (such as ablation needles, ultrasound transducers or probes, scalpels, cauterizers, etc.) they are using during the procedure, the relative emplacements or poses of these devices, prediction information for those devices, and other information. Some embodiments provide useful information about 3D data sets and allow the operator to control the presentation of regions of interest. Additionally, some embodiments provide for quick calibration of surgical instruments or attachments for surgical instruments.

Claims (51)

1. A method for image management in image-guided medical procedures, the method comprising:

obtaining pose information for a set of 3D visualizable medical data, wherein the set of 3D visualizable medical data comprises a plurality of image slices;

determining, real-time pose information for a medical device;

selecting a region of the set of 3D visualizable medical data based on the real-time pose information for the medical device and the pose information for the set of 3D visualizable medical data, wherein the selected region comprises data from the set of 3D visualizable medical data that intersects with an imaging plane associated with the medical device;

determining a perspective view of the selected region based at least in part on an expected location of a user; and

causing a display to display a rendering of the perspective view of the selected region and at least a portion of the set of 3D visualizable medical data outside of the selected region, wherein the portion of the set of 3D visualizable medical data outside the selected region is displayed differently based on a distance from the selected region.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the set of 3D visualizable medical data comprises preoperative imaging data.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the set of 3D visualizable medical data comprises annotations of imaging data.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the set of 3D visualizable medical data is a first set of 3D visualizable medical data, wherein the selected region is a first region, and wherein the method further comprises:

obtaining pose information for a second set of 3D visualizable medical data;

selecting a second region of the second set of 3D visualizable medical data based on the real-time pose information for the medical device and the pose information for the second set of 3D visualizable medical data; and

causing the display to display a rendering of a perspective view of the second region.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein causing the display to display the rendering of the perspective view of the second region comprises rendering the perspective view of the first region using a first rendering technique and rendering the perspective view of the second region using a second rendering technique, the second rendering technique being different from the first rendering technique.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the portion of the set of 3D visualizable medical data outside the selected region is displayed in a focus based on the distance from the selected region.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the medical device is a first medical device, wherein the selected region is a first region, and wherein the method further comprises:

determining real-time pose information for a second medical device;

selecting a second region of the set of 3D visualizable medical data based on the real-time pose information for the second medical device and the pose information for the set of 3D visualizable medical data; and

causing the display to display a rendering of a perspective view of the second region.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the medical device is an ablation needle or an ultrasound transducer.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the portion of the set of 3D visualizable medical data outside the selected region is displayed as gradually-fading.

10. A system for image management in image-guided medical procedures, the system comprising:

one or more computing devices comprising one or more processors, the one or more computing devices configured to:

obtain pose information for a set of 3D visualizable medical data, wherein the set of 3D visualizable medical data comprises a plurality of image slices;

determine real-time pose information for a medical device;

select a region of the set of 3D visualizable medical data based on the real-time pose information for the medical device and the pose information for the set of 3D visualizable medical data, wherein the selected region comprises data from the set of 3D visualizable medical data that intersects with an imaging plane associated with the medical device;

determine a perspective view of the selected region based at least in part on an expected location of a user; and

cause a display to display a rendering of the perspective view of the selected region and at least a portion of the set of 3D visualizable medical data outside of the selected region, wherein the portion of the set of 3D visualizable medical data outside the selected region is displayed differently based on a distance from the selected region.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the set of 3D visualizable medical data is a first set of 3D visualizable medical data, wherein the selected region is a first region, and wherein the one or more computing devices are further configured to:

obtain pose information for a second set of 3D visualizable medical data;

select a second region of the second set of 3D visualizable medical data based on the real-time pose information for the medical device and the pose information for the second set of 3D visualizable medical data; and

cause the display to display a rendering of a perspective view of the second region.

12. The system of claim 10 , wherein the medical device is selected from a group consisting of an ablation needle and an ultrasound transducer.

13. A non-transient computer-readable medium comprising computer-executable instructions for image management in image-guided medical procedures, said computer-executable instructions, when executing on one or more computing devices, perform a method comprising:

obtaining pose information for a set of 3D visualizable medical data, wherein the set of 3D visualizable medical data comprises a plurality of image slices;

determining real-time pose information for a medical device;

selecting a region of the set of 3D visualizable medical data based on the real-time pose information for the medical device and the pose information for the set of 3D visualizable medical data, wherein the selected region comprises data from the set of 3D visualizable medical data that intersects with an imaging plane associated with the medical device;

determining a perspective view of the selected region based at least in part on an expected location of a user; and

causing a display to display a rendering of the perspective view of the selected region and at least a portion of the set of 3D visualizable medical data outside of the selected region, wherein the portion of the set of 3D visualizable medical data outside the selected region is displayed differently based on a distance from the selected region.
