Abstract

A medical device includes a first housing portion (FHP) and a second housing portion (SHP) configured to be to be movable relative to each other from a first position to operatively engage at a second position to couple at least one of a drive device and a needle-inserting device supported by one of the FHP and the SHP to a reservoir supported by the other of the FHP and the SHP. Electronic circuitry configured to detect at least one of a first magnetic interaction between a magnet and at least one of a first magnetically attractive material and a first magnet-responsive device and a second magnetic interaction between the magnet and at least one of a second magnetically attractive material and a second magnet-responsive device, and to provide a signal or a change in state in response to detecting at least one of the interactions.

Claims (38)

1. A delivery system for delivering fluidic media to a user, the delivery system comprising:

a first housing portion adapted to be carried by a user, and a second housing portion configured to be selectively operatively engaged with and disengaged from the first housing portion;

a reservoir carried by one of the first housing portion or the second housing portion, the reservoir having an interior volume for containing fluidic media and a plunger head moveable within the interior volume of the reservoir along an axial direction of the reservoir;

a drive device supported by one of the first housing portion or the second housing portion and configured such that, while the first housing portion and the second housing portion are operatively engaged, the reservoir is operatively coupled to the drive device;

a first interactive element supported on the first housing portion;

a second interactive element supported on the second housing portion at a location to be interactable with the first interactive element; and

circuitry configured to detect an interaction between the first interactive element and the second interactive element, and, in response to detecting the interaction between the first interactive element and the second interactive element, provide a signal corresponding to a state of the interaction,

wherein one of the first interactive element or the second interactive element is a magnetic material, wherein the other of the first interactive element or the second interactive element is a magnetic sensor configured to sense a field direction of the magnetic material or a gauss level, and wherein the circuitry is configured to detect the interaction between the first interactive and the second interactive element by receiving signals from the magnetic sensor and comparing the signals with pre-stored values or thresholds.

2. A delivery system for delivering fluidic media to a user, the delivery system comprising,

a first housing portion adapted to be carried by a user, and a second housing portion configured to be selectively operatively engaged with and disengaged from the first housing portion;

a reservoir carried by one of the first housing portion or the second housing portion, the reservoir having an interior volume for containing fluidic media and a plunger head moveable within the interior volume of the reservoir along an axial direction of the reservoir;

a drive device supported by one of the first housing portion or the second housing portion and configured such that, while the first housing portion and the second housing portion are operatively engaged, the reservoir is operative coupled to the drive device;

a first interactive element supported on the first housing portion;

a second interactive element supported on the second housing portion at a location to be interactable with the first interactive element; and

circuitry configured to detect an interact between the first interactive element and the second interactive element, and, in response to detecting the interaction between the first interactive element and the second interactive element, provide a signal corresponding to a state of the interaction,

wherein one of the first interactive element or the second interactive element is a radio frequency identification device (RFID), wherein the other of the first interactive element or the second interactive element is an RFID sensor, and wherein in the circuitry is configured interaction between the interactive element and the second interactive element by receiving signals from the RFID sensor and comparing the signals with pre-stored values or thresholds.

3. The delivery system of claim 1 , wherein the first housing portion and the second housing portion are connected together by twist or threaded connection.

4. The delivery system of claim 1 , wherein the first interactive element and the second interactive element interact with each other when in sufficiently close proximity to each other.

5. The delivery system of claim 1 , wherein the first interactive element and the second interactive element interact with each other when the first housing portion and the second housing portion are connected or otherwise operatively engaged and the first interactive element and the second interactive element are properly aligned.

6. The delivery system of claim 1 , wherein the circuitry detects a first-time connection of the first housing portion and the second housing portion.

7. The delivery system of claim 6 , wherein a priming operation is provided upon detection of the first-time connection.

8. The delivery system of claim 1 , wherein the circuitry is configured to detect a number of times the second housing portion is operatively engaged with or disengaged from the first housing portion.

9. The delivery system of claim 1 , further comprising a user-perceptible indicator coupled to the circuitry and configured to provide a user-perceptible indication in response to the signal.

10. A medical device comprising:

a first housing portion;

a second housing portion configured to be selectively engaged with and disengaged from the first housing portion;

a reservoir carried by one of the first housing portion or the second housing portion, the reservoir having an interior volume for containing fluidic media;

a drive device carried by one of the first housing portion or the second housing portion, the drive device configured to cause fluidic media to flow out of the reservoir;

a first interactive element carried by the first housing portion, the first interactive element comprising a magnetic material;

a second interactive element carried by the second housing portion and configured to interact with the first interactive element, the second interactive element comprising a magnetic sensor; and

electronics configured to detect an interaction between the first interactive element and the second interactive element by receiving signals from the magnetic sensor and comparing the signals with pre-stored values or thresholds, and, in response to detecting the interaction between the first interactive element and the second interactive element, provide a signal corresponding to a state of the interaction.

11. The medical device of claim 10 , further including a plunger head moveable within an interior volume of the reservoir along an axial direction of the reservoir.

12. The medical device of claim 10 , wherein the first housing portion and the second housing portion are connected together by twist or threaded connection.

13. The medical device of claim 10 , wherein the first interactive element and the second interactive element interact with each other when in sufficiently close proximity to each other.

14. The medical device of claim 10 , wherein the first interactive element and the second interactive element interact with each other when the first housing portion and the second housing portion are connected or otherwise operatively engaged and the first interactive element and the second interactive element are properly aligned.
