Abstract

The invention comprises a fusion implant system for a generally u-shaped bone staple in which the staple is provided on a storage block with the two side legs in an un-splayed position, and an inserter having two triangular shaped pivoting handles has detachable tips that engage the staple on the storage block such that when the handles are aligned one over the other in a congruent position, the tips force the side legs into a splayed configuration at 90° and a sliding block holds the handles in this position to allow the staple to removed from the storage block and tamped using the inserter handles into respective bone.

Claims (26)

1. A surgical staple system, comprising:

a staple having a central web, a first leg, and a second leg, the first leg and the second leg extending from the central web; and

an inserter including a first handle having a first tip, a second handle having a second tip and a lock member, the first handle and the second handle are configured such that the first handle and the second handle are movable between a first position and a second position in which the first handle and the second handle are disposed adjacent to one another in alignment,

wherein the first tip and the second tip are configured to engage the staple such that when the first handle and the second handle are moved from the first position to the second position the first leg and the second leg are moved from a first orientation to a second orientation in which the first leg and the second leg are parallel, and

the lock member is configured to slide towards the staple when the inserter is engaged with the staple to lock the first handle and the second handle into the second position and the lock member is configured to slide away from the staple when the inserter is engaged with the staple to unlock the first handle and the second handle from the second position to permit the first handle and the second handle to return to the first position.

2. The surgical staple system of claim 1 , wherein the first handle is disposed at an angle relative to the second handle when the first handle and the second handle are in the first position.

3. The surgical staple system of claim 1 , wherein each of the first leg and the second leg include a respective plurality of barbs.

4. The surgical staple system of claim 3 , wherein the plurality of barbs on the first leg face the second leg.

5. The surgical staple system of claim 4 , wherein the plurality of barbs on the second leg face the first leg.

6. The surgical staple system of claim 5 , wherein a width of the staple is between 8 millimeters and 25 millimeters.

7. The surgical staple system of claim 6 , wherein a length of the first leg and the second leg of the staple is between 8 millimeters and 25 millimeters.

8. The surgical staple system of claim 7 , further comprising a storage block for storing the staple prior to use.

9. The surgical staple system of claim 1 , wherein the first tip includes a first inner engagement post and a first web abutment member that are separated from each other by a first gap that is sized and configured to receive the central web of the staple.

10. The surgical staple system of claim 9 , wherein the second tip includes a second inner engagement post and a second web abutment member that are separated from each other by a second gap that is sized and configured to receive the central web of the staple.

11. A surgical staple system, comprising:

a staple having a central web, a first leg, and a second leg, the first leg and the second leg movable from a first orientation in which the first leg is disposed at a first angle relative to the central web and the second leg is disposed at a second angle relative to the central web; and

an inserter including:

a first handle terminating at a first tip, the first tip including a first engagement post and a first web abutment member that are separated from one another by a first gap,

a second handle terminating at a second tip, the second tip including a second engagement post and a second web abutment member that are separated from one another by a second gap, and

a lock member that is configured to slide towards the staple when the inserter is engaged with the staple to lock the first handle and the second handle into a second position and the lock member is configured to slide away from the staple when the inserter is engaged with the staple to unlock the first handle and the second handle from the second position to permit the first handle and the second handle to return to a first position,

wherein the first gap and the second gap are sized and configured to receive the central web of the staple, and

wherein, when the central web of the staple is disposed in the first gap and the second gap and when the first handle and the second handle are disposed in the second position, the staple is disposed in an orientation in which the first leg is parallel to the second leg.

12. The surgical staple system of claim 11 , further comprising a storage block for storing the staple prior to use.

13. The surgical staple system of claim 11 , wherein the first leg includes a first plurality of barbs and the second leg includes a second plurality of barbs.

14. The surgical staple system of claim 13 , wherein a width of the staple is between 8 millimeters and 25 millimeters.

15. The surgical staple system of claim 14 , wherein a length of the first leg and the second leg of the staple is between 8 millimeters and 25 millimeters.
