METHODS AND DEVICES TO TREAT NASAL AIRWAYS
Methods and devices for treating nasal airways are provided. Such devices and methods may improve airflow through an internal and/or external nasal valve, and comprise the use of mechanical re-shaping, energy application and other treatments to modify the shape, structure, and/or air flow characteristics of an internal nasal valve, an external nasal valve or other nasal airways.
1 . A device for treating tissue in a nasal cavity in a patient, the device comprising:
an elongate shaft having a proximal end and a distal end, and defining a longitudinal axis;
a handle attached to the proximal end of the elongate shaft;
an elongate treatment element attached to the distal end of the elongate shaft, the elongate treatment element having a front tissue-contact surface, a back surface, and a length that is parallel to the longitudinal axis of the elongate shaft; and
two rows of bipolar, radiofrequency electrodes protruding from the front tissue-contact surface of the elongate treatment element.
2 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the back surface narrows distally along a portion of the length of the elongate treatment element from a distal end of the two rows of electrodes to a distal tip of the elongate treatment element.

The device of claim 1 , wherein the two rows of electrodes comprise multiple bipolar electrode pairs, and wherein each of the multiple bipolar electrode pairs has a separate, controlled electrical channel, configured to allow different regions of the elongate treatment element to be activated separately to allow for accurate temperature control and precise targeting of tissue.
4 . The device of claim 1 , further comprising an insulating material interposed between the two rows of electrodes.
5 . The device of claim 1 , further comprising:
a cable having a distal end coupled with the handle and a proximal end; and
an adaptor coupled with the proximal end of the cable for connecting the cable to a radiofrequency energy generator.
6 . The device of claim 1 , further comprising a cooling mechanism coupled with the elongate treatment element for cooling at least one tissue of the nasal cavity.
7 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the elongate treatment element is wider than the shaft.
8 . The device of claim 1 , further comprising a heat sensor coupled with the front tissue-contact surface, configured to measure a temperature of a tissue in contact with the heat sensor.
9 . The device of claim 8 , wherein the heat sensor comprises a thermocouple disposed between the two rows of electrodes on the front tissue-contact surface.
10 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the back surface comprises a shallow, curved surface.
11 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the elongate shaft has a width of between 0.125 inches and 0.25 inches and a length of between 1.5 inches and 4 inches.
12 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the elongate shaft is flexible enough to allow a user of the device to adjust an angle of the elongate shaft by bending the elongate shaft.
13 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the handle comprises an input control comprising a button for controlling input of radiofrequency energy to the elongate treatment element.
14 . A system for treating tissue in a nasal cavity in a patient, the system comprising:
a treatment device, comprising:
an elongate shaft having a proximal end and a distal end, and defining a longitudinal axis;
a handle attached to the proximal end of the elongate shaft; and
an elongate treatment element extending from the distal end of the elongate shaft, the elongate treatment element having a tissue-contact surface and a length that is parallel to the longitudinal axis of the elongate shaft;
two rows of bipolar, radiofrequency electrodes protruding from the tissue-contact surface of the elongate treatment element;
a cable attached to the handle; and
an adaptor attached to the cable; and
a radiofrequency generator for providing radiofrequency energy to the treatment device, wherein the radiofrequency generator comprises:
a control system for controlling energy delivery to the treatment device; and
an outlet for connecting with the adaptor of the treatment device.
15 . The system of claim 14 , wherein the elongate treatment element is a separate piece attached to the distal end of the elongate shaft.

The system of claim 14 , wherein the two rows of electrodes comprise multiple bipolar electrode pairs, wherein each of the multiple bipolar electrode pairs has a separate, controlled electrical channel, and wherein the control system of the radiofrequency generator is configured to activate different regions of the elongate treatment element separately to allow for accurate temperature control and precise targeting of tissue.
17 . The system of claim 14 , wherein the elongate treatment element is configured to be inserted into a nostril.
18 . The system of claim 14 , wherein the treatment device further comprises a heat sensor coupled with the tissue-contact surface, configured to measure a temperature of a tissue in contact with the heat sensor.
19 . The system of claim 18 , wherein the control system of the radiofrequency generator is configured to receive signals from the heat sensor corresponding the temperature and adjust an amount of delivered radiofrequency energy, based on the received signals.
20 . The system of claim 14 , wherein the elongate shaft of the treatment device is flexible enough to allow a user of the treatment device to adjust an angle of the elongate shaft by bending the elongate shaft.
