Abstract

Methods, systems, and computer program products for flexible virtualization system deployment into different cloud computing environments. A set of floating licenses to virtualization system software components is established. The set of floating licenses are configured to permit usage of the virtualization system software components on different cloud computing infrastructures. Workload parameters of a workload to be deployed to one of the different cloud computing infrastructures is considered with respect to cloud attributes corresponding to the different cloud computing infrastructures. One or more candidate target cloud computing infrastructures are selected based upon a comparison between workload attributes of a computing workload and cloud attributes of the candidate target cloud computing infrastructures. Virtualization system software components are deployed into the selected target cloud computing infrastructures. Licenses to the virtualization system software components can float between any combination of different cloud computing infrastructures, including floating the licenses between private clouds and public clouds.

Claims (46)

1. A non-transitory computer readable medium having stored thereon a sequence of instructions which, when stored in memory and executed by a processor causes a set of acts comprising:

maintaining a set of floating licenses to virtualization system software components, individual floating licenses of the set of floating licenses being allocatable to any one of a plurality of cloud computing infrastructures to permit usage of the virtualization system software components;

selecting a cloud computing infrastructure of the plurality of cloud computing infrastructure for deployment of a workload based upon a match between a workload attribute of the workload and a cloud attribute of the cloud computing infrastructure; and

allocating a floating license of the set of floating licenses to a virtualization system software component for executing the workload.

2. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the cloud computing infrastructure comprises a private cloud computing infrastructure.

3. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 2 , wherein the private cloud computing infrastructure is on-premises of an enterprise.

4. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the set of acts further comprise forming a virtualized entity from at least one of the virtualization system software components.

5. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 4 , wherein the set of acts further comprise instantiating the workload onto the virtualized entity.

The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the virtualization system software components comprises at least one of, a hypervisor, a cluster configurator, a controller virtual machine, a virtual storage capability, or a graphics processing unit feature configuration.

7. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 1 , wherein instantiating the virtualization system software component on the cloud computing infrastructure comprises deploying a time-metered virtualized entity to the cloud computing infrastructure.

8. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 7 , wherein the time-metered virtualized entity is metered based on how long the time-metered virtualized entity is used on a corresponding central processing unit.

9. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 7 , wherein the time-metered virtualized entity is metered based on how long the time-metered virtualized entity is used on a bare metal node.

10. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the floating license can be apportioned between any computing clusters on public clouds, computing clusters on private clouds, and on-premises computing clusters.

11. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the floating licenses are maintained in a pool of licensed software of a provisioning facility.

12. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the provisions facility tracks use of the floating licenses by a plurality of accounts.

13. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 11 , wherein status information for tracking the use of the floating licenses by different accounts is maintained in separate databases.

14. A method comprising:

maintaining a set of floating licenses to virtualization system software components, individual floating licenses of the set of floating licenses being allocatable to any one of a plurality of cloud computing infrastructures to permit usage of the virtualization system software components;

selecting a cloud computing infrastructure of the plurality of cloud computing infrastructure for deployment of a workload based upon a match between a workload attribute of the workload and a cloud attribute of the cloud computing infrastructure; and

allocating a floating license of the set of floating licenses to a virtualization system software component for executing the workload.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the cloud computing infrastructure comprises a private cloud computing infrastructure.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the private cloud computing infrastructure is on-premises of an enterprise.

17. The method of claim 14 , further comprising forming a virtualized entity from at least one of the virtualization system software components.

18. The method of claim 17 , further comprising instantiating the workload onto the virtualized entity.

19. The method of claim 14 , wherein at least one of the virtualization system software components comprises at least one of, a hypervisor, a cluster configurator, a controller virtual machine, a virtual storage capability, or a graphics processing unit feature configuration.

20. The method of claim 14 , wherein instantiating the virtualization system software component on the cloud computing infrastructure comprises deploying a time-metered virtualized entity to the cloud computing infrastructure.

21. The method of claim 20 , wherein the time-metered virtualized entity is metered based on how long the time-metered virtualized entity is used on a corresponding central processing unit.

22. The method of claim 20 , wherein the time-metered virtualized entity is metered based on how long the time-metered virtualized entity is used on a bare metal node.

23. The method of claim 14 , wherein the floating license can be apportioned between any computing clusters on public clouds, computing clusters on private clouds, and on-premises computing clusters.

24. The method of claim 14 , wherein the floating licenses are maintained in a pool of licensed software of a provisioning facility.

25. The method of claim 24 , wherein the provisions facility tracks use of the floating licenses by a plurality of accounts.

26. The method of claim 24 , wherein status information for tracking the use of the floating licenses by different accounts is maintained in separate databases.

27. A system comprising:

a storage medium having stored thereon a sequence of instructions; and

a processor that executes the sequence of instructions to cause the processor to perform acts comprising,

maintaining a set of floating licenses to virtualization system software components, individual floating licenses of the set of floating licenses being allocatable to any one of a plurality of cloud computing infrastructures to permit usage of the virtualization system software components;

selecting a cloud computing infrastructure of the plurality of cloud computing infrastructure for deployment of a workload based upon a match between a workload attribute of the workload and a cloud attribute of the cloud computing infrastructure; and

allocating a floating license of the set of floating licenses to a virtualization system software component for executing the workload.

28. The system of claim 27 , wherein the cloud computing infrastructure comprises a private cloud computing infrastructure.

29. The system of claim 28 , wherein the private cloud computing infrastructure is on-premises of an enterprise.

30. The system of claim 27 , wherein the acts further comprise forming a virtualized entity from at least one of the virtualization system software components and instantiating the workload onto the virtualized entity.

31. The system of claim 27 , wherein at least one of the virtualization system software components comprises at least one of, a hypervisor, a cluster configurator, a controller virtual machine, a virtual storage capability, or a graphics processing unit feature configuration.

The system of claim 27 , wherein instantiating the virtualization system software component on the cloud computing infrastructure comprises deploying a time-metered virtualized entity to the cloud computing infrastructure, and the time-metered virtualized entity is metered based on how long the time-metered virtualized entity is used on a corresponding central processing unit or a bare metal node.

33. The system of claim 27 , wherein the floating license can be apportioned between any computing clusters on public clouds, computing clusters on private clouds, and on-premises computing clusters.

34. The system of claim 33 , wherein the floating licenses are maintained in a pool of licensed software of a provisioning facility and the provisioning facility tracks use of the floating licenses by a plurality of accounts.

35. The system of claim 33 , wherein the floating licenses are maintained in a pool of licensed software of a provisioning facility and status information for tracking the use of the floating licenses by different accounts is maintained in separate databases.
