Abstract

A physiological characteristic monitoring system includes a wearable attachment device, an electronic device, and a physiological characteristic sensor (e.g., a glucose sensor) including a portion that is insertable into subcutaneous tissue of a user to generate sensor signals indicating a physiological characteristic of the user. The electronic device includes a first connector configured to detachably couple to the physiological characteristic sensor to receive the sensor signals in a first configuration of the electronic device, a second connector configured to detachably couple to the wearable attachment device in a second configuration of the electronic device, a controller configured to determine the physiological characteristic of the user based on the sensor signals, and a display configured to display the physiological characteristic of the user.

Claims (60)

1 . A physiological characteristic monitoring system, comprising:

a physiological characteristic sensor including a portion that is insertable into subcutaneous tissue of a user to generate sensor signals indicating a physiological characteristic of the user;

a wearable attachment device; and

an electronic display device including:

a first connector that detachably couples to the physiological characteristic sensor to receive the sensor signals in a first configuration of the electronic display device, wherein, in the first configuration,

the physiological characteristic sensor adheres to skin of the user; and

the electronic display device is attached to the user via the first connector and the physiological characteristic sensor to form an on-body display system that determines and displays the physiological characteristic of the user;

a second connector that detachably couples to the wearable attachment device in a second configuration of the electronic display device, wherein the electronic display device is attached to the user via the second connector and the wearable attachment device in the second configuration;

a controller configured to process the sensor signals received from the physiological characteristic sensor to determine the physiological characteristic of the user; and

a display configured to display:

in the first configuration, at least a first user interface presenting the physiological characteristic of the user determined by the controller based on the sensor signals generated by the physiological characteristic sensor; and

in the second configuration, at least a second user interface presenting information other than the physiological characteristic of the user.

2 . The physiological characteristic monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein the physiological characteristic sensor includes a glucose sensor.

3 . The physiological characteristic monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein the wearable attachment device includes a wearable band.

4 . The physiological characteristic monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein:

the electronic display device further comprises an activity sensor configured to observe an activity level of the user and generate activity signals based on the observation;

the controller is configurable to determine the activity level of the user based on the activity signals; and

the display is configurable to display an indication of the activity level of the user.

5 . The physiological characteristic monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein:

the physiological characteristic sensor includes an adhesive patch; and

in the first configuration, the physiological characteristic sensor is coupled to the first connector of the electronic display device and adheres to the skin of the user via the adhesive patch.

6 . The physiological characteristic monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein the first connector and the second connector are configured such that coupling the second connector to the wearable attachment device prevents the physiological characteristic sensor from coupling to the first connector.

7 . The physiological characteristic monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein the electronic display device is configured to communicate with a portable device to send the physiological characteristic of the user to the portable device.

8 . The physiological characteristic monitoring system of claim 7 , wherein the controller is configured to:

store the physiological characteristic of the user in a storage device; and

output the stored physiological characteristic of the user in response to a request from the portable device.

9 . The physiological characteristic monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to:

determine that the physiological characteristic of the user exceeds a threshold; and

generate, via the display, an indication or a prompt in response to determining that the physiological characteristic of the user exceeds the threshold.

10 . A wearable device comprising:

a first connector that physically and electrically couples to a glucose sensor to receive sensor signals indicating glucose levels of a user in a first configuration of the wearable device;

a second connector that detachably couples to a wearable attachment device in a second configuration of the wearable device, wherein the first connector and the second connector are configured such that coupling the second connector to the wearable attachment device prevents the glucose sensor from coupling to the first connector;

a controller configured to process the sensor signals received from the glucose sensor to determine the glucose levels of the user; and

a display configured to display:

in the first configuration, at least a first user interface presenting the glucose levels of the user; and

in the second configuration, at least a second user interface different from the first user interface.

11 . The wearable device of claim 10 , wherein, in the first configuration, the wearable device is attached to the user via the first connector and the glucose sensor, and wherein the glucose sensor includes a portion that is insertable into subcutaneous tissue of the user to generate the sensor signals.

12 . The wearable device of claim 10 , further comprising an activity sensor configured to observe an activity level of the user and generate activity signals based on the observation, wherein:

the controller is configurable to determine the activity level of the user based on the activity signals, and

the display is configurable to display the activity level of the user.

13 . The wearable device of claim 10 , wherein the wearable device is configured to communicate with a portable device to send the glucose levels of the user to the portable device.

14 . The wearable device of claim 13 , wherein the controller is configured to:

store the glucose levels of the user in a storage device; and

output the stored glucose levels of the user in response to a request from the portable device.

15 . The wearable device of claim 10 , wherein the controller is configured to:

determine that a glucose level of the user exceeds a threshold; and

generate, via the display, an indication or a prompt in response to determining that the glucose level of the user exceeds the threshold.

16 . The physiological characteristic monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein, in the first configuration, the electronic display device is configurable to display a number of days remaining for the physiological characteristic sensor to adhere to the skin of the user.

17 . The physiological characteristic monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein, in the first configuration, the electronic display device is configurable to display a status of the physiological characteristic sensor.

18 . A method comprising:

receiving, by an electronic display device via a first connector of the electronic display device detachably coupled to a physiological characteristic sensor that is attached to skin of a user, sensor signals indicating a physiological characteristic of the user from the physiological characteristic sensor, wherein the physiological characteristic sensor includes a portion that is insertable into subcutaneous tissue of the user to generate the sensor signals;

determining, by the electronic display device, the physiological characteristic of the user based on the sensor signals;

displaying, by the electronic display device attached to the user via the first connector and the physiological characteristic sensor, a first user interface presenting the physiological characteristic of the user; and

displaying, while the first connector of the electronic display device is detached from the physiological characteristic sensor and the electronic display device is detachably coupled to a wearable attachment device via a second connector of the electronic display device, a second user interface on the electronic display device, the second user interface presenting information other than the physiological characteristic of the user.

19 . The method of claim 18 , further comprising at least one of:

storing the physiological characteristic of the user in a storage device of the electronic display device; or

sending, by the electronic display device, the physiological characteristic of the user to another device.

20 . The method of claim 18 , further comprising:
