Abstract

A new fiber optic connector provides a smaller form factor by including two ferrule assemblies in a housing. The housing accepts a push-pull mechanism that allows for insertion and removal from a carrier as well as an adapter. The push-pull mechanism may also include a flexure member to return the push-pull mechanism. Polarity of the fiber optic connector may also be selected by use of the push-pull mechanism.

Claims (36)

1. A push-pull mechanism for engaging a housing of a fiber optic connector, the push-pull mechanism comprising:

a latch component having a main body engaging longitudinally with a housing of a fiber-optic connector;

a latch having a free end above the main body and extending upward at an angle from the main body of the latch component,

wherein the latch is movable between a first position and a second position to respectively engage or disengage from a fiber-optic adapter that receives the fiber-optic connector,

wherein the second position is closer to the housing than the first position; and

a rail portion extending alongside portions of the main body to slidably engage the housing of the fiber-optic connector.

2. The push-pull mechanism according to claim 1 , wherein the latch component includes a latch body positioned underneath the main body.

3. The push-pull mechanism according to claim 2 , wherein the latch is attached to the latch body.

4. The push-pull mechanism according to claim 1 , wherein the latch is attached to a latch body of the latch component.

5. The push-pull mechanism according to claim 1 , wherein the rail portion slidably engages the fiber-optic connector on an external surface of the housing.

6. The push-pull mechanism according to claim 1 , wherein the main body has a front portion and a rear portion, the latch engaging the front portion, and

wherein the rear portion allows a user to push and pull the latch component to engage and disengage the fiber-optic connector with the fiber-optic adapter.

7. The push-pull mechanism according to claim 1 , wherein the main body has a window to receive the latch.

8. The push-pull mechanism according to claim 7 , wherein the latch is an adapter latch at least partially positioned and moveable within the window, the adapter latch being engageable with the fiber-optic adapter to retain or release the fiber-optic connector therefrom.

9. The push-pull mechanism according to claim 1 , further comprising a flexure member connected to the main body to bias the main body toward a front end of the housing.

10. The push-pull mechanism according to claim 1 , wherein a location of the rail portion relative to the housing thereby determines a polarity of the fiber-optic connector.

11. A push-pull mechanism for engaging a housing of a fiber optic connector, the push-pull mechanism comprising:

a latch component having a main body to engage with a housing of a fiber-optic connector;

a latch having a free end above the main body and extending upward at an angle from the main body of the latch component; and

a rail portion extending longitudinally along the push-pull mechanism to slidably engage the housing of the fiber-optic connector,

wherein to engage the fiber optic connector to a fiber-optic adapter, a proximal end is engaged to an inner surface of the fiber-optic adapter until the free end is at least partially inside an adapter window in contact with an engaging surface of the adapter window, and

wherein to disengage the fiber optic connector from the fiber-optic adapter, a rearward movement of the main body moves the proximal end out of the adapter window, thereby disengaging the latch from the engaging surface of the adapter window.

12. The push-pull mechanism according to claim 11 , wherein the latch is movable between a first position and a second position to engage or disengage from the fiber-optic adapter when engaged.

13. The push-pull mechanism according to claim 12 , wherein the second position is closer to the housing than the first position.

14. The push-pull mechanism according to claim 11 , wherein the latch component includes a latch body positioned underneath the main body and having the latch connected thereto.

15. The push-pull mechanism according to claim 11 , wherein the rail portion slidably engages the fiber-optic connector on an external surface of the housing.

The push-pull mechanism according to claim 11 , wherein the main body has a front portion, a middle portion and a rear portion, the latch engaging the front portion, and wherein the rear portion allows a user to push and pull the latch component to respectively engage and disengage the fiber optic connector with the fiber-optic adapter.

17. The push-pull mechanism according to claim 11 , wherein the main body has an elongate structure.

18. The push-pull mechanism according to claim 11 , wherein the main body engages a short side of the housing thereby determining a polarity of the fiber-optic connector.

19. The push-pull mechanism according to claim 11 , wherein the main body engages the housing and the latch, and the latch does not engage the housing.

20. A push-pull mechanism for use with a fiber optic connector having a housing comprising:

a main body having a front portion, a middle portion and a rear portion;

a latch body connected to the front portion of the main body, the front portion engaged a latch of the latch body, the latch for engaging a fiber-optic adapter; and

a rail portion extending alongside portions of the main body to slidably engage the housing,

wherein the latch is movable between a first position and a second position to respectively engage with or disengage from the fiber-optic adapter, and

wherein the second position is closer to the housing than the first position.
