Abstract

Techniques are described for operating an optical system. In some embodiments, light associated with a world object is received at the optical system. Virtual image light is projected onto an eyepiece of the optical system. A portion of a system field of view of the optical system to be at least partially dimmed is determined based on information detected by the optical system. A plurality of spatially-resolved dimming values for the portion of the system field of view may be determined based on the detected information. The detected information may include light information, gaze information, and/or image information. A dimmer of the optical system may be adjusted to reduce an intensity of light associated with the world object in the portion of the system field of view according to the plurality of dimming values.

Claims (27)

1. A display device, comprising:

an eyepiece stack; and

an optical device having a curved plastic substrate and a plurality of components laminated onto the curved plastic substrate, the plurality of components comprising:

an outer stack of components comprising at least one of a reflective film and a tinted film;

a stack of birefringent films positioned between the outer stack of components and the plastic substrate; and

a spatial light modulator assembly positioned between the stack of birefringent films and the plastic substrate.

2. The display device of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of components further comprise:

a first polarizer positioned between the spatial light modulator assembly and the plastic substrate; and

a second polarizer positioned between the stack of birefringent films and the spatial light modulator assembly.

3. The display device of claim 2 , wherein the plurality of components further comprises:

a third polarizer positioned between the outer stack of components and the stack of birefringent films.

4. The display device of claim 1 , wherein the stack of birefringent films comprises:

a first quarter wave plate (QWP);

a second QWP; and

a C-plate positioned between the first and second QWPs.

5. The display device of claim 1 , wherein the spatial light modulator assembly comprises:

a layer of pixel electrodes;

a planar electrode; and

a layer of liquid crystal (LC) positioned between the layer of pixel electrodes and the planar electrode.

6. The display device of claim 5 , wherein the spatial light modulator assembly further comprises:

a first plastic layer positioned adjacent the layer of electrodes; and

a second plastic layer positioned adjacent the planar electrode.

7. The display device of claim 5 , wherein the layer of pixel electrodes comprises segmented electrodes and circuitry electrically coupled to the segmented electrodes.

8. The display device of claim 7 , wherein the circuitry comprises organic thin film transistors (O-TFTs).

9. The display device of claim 1 , wherein a shape of each component in the plurality of components conforms to the curvature of the plastic substrate.

10. The display device of claim 1 , wherein the outer stack of components comprises at least one of a wire grid polarizer and a cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) reflector.

11. The display device of claim 1 , wherein a plastic substrate, the shape of the plastic substrate exhibits curvature in two dimensions.
