Abstract

An apparatus, system and method is described for controlling one or more consumer electronic devices that is performed by a smart device. The smart device causes one or more graphical elements, each for performing a particular operation to be displayed. The smart device then causes an action to be performed when the user selects one of the graphical elements, for example by pressing one of the keys on the universal controlling device or by speaking a command.

Claims (26)

1. A controlling device, comprising:

a transmitter;

a plurality of input keys each comprising a switch for generating an activation signal when pressed by a user and a touch sensor for generating a touch data when touched by the user;

a processing device coupled to the plurality of input keys; and

a memory having stored thereon processor executable instructions, the instructions, when executed by the processing device, causing the controlling device to perform steps, comprising:

receiving a plurality of touch data from each one of a corresponding plurality of the plurality of input keys;

determining a one of the plurality of touch data that indicates a highest increase of a parasitic capacitance to ground value; and

transmitting to a smart device via use of the transmitter a first key id associated with a one of the corresponding plurality of the plurality of input keys from which is received the one of the plurality of touch data that indicates the highest increase of the parasitic capacitance to ground value.

2. The controlling device as recited in claim 1 , wherein, subsequent to transmitting the first key id, the instructions cause the controlling device to respond to receiving the activation signal from the one of the corresponding plurality of the plurality of input keys from which is received the one of the plurality of touch data that indicates the highest increase of the parasitic capacitance to ground value by transmitting to the smart device via use of the transmitter a second key id associated with the one of the corresponding plurality of the plurality of input keys from which is received the one of the plurality of touch data that indicates the highest increase of the parasitic capacitance to ground value.

3. The controlling device as recited in claim 2 , wherein the first key id is different than the second key id.

4. The controlling device as recited in claim 1 , wherein the controlling device further comprises an orientation sensor coupled to the processing device and the instructions, when executed, cause the controlling device to transmit to the smart device via use of the transmitter an orientation data representative of an orientation of the controlling device as determined by use of the orientation sensor.

5. The controlling device as recited in claim 4 , wherein the orientation sensor comprises an accelerometer.

6. The controlling device as recited in claim 4 , wherein the orientation sensor comprises a multiple-axis gyroscope.

7. The controlling device as recited in claim 4 , wherein the orientation data is transmitted together with the first device ID.

8. The controlling device as recited in claim 7 , wherein the controlling device further comprises a receiver coupled to the processor and the instructions, when executed, cause the controlling device to receive from the smart device via the receiver a reprogramming data, sent by the smart device in response to the smart device receiving the orientation data, and to use the reprogramming data to reprogram a mapping between each of the plurality of input keys and a key id assigned to each of the plurality of input keys.

9. The controlling device as recited in claim 4 , wherein the controlling device further comprises a receiver coupled to the processor and the instructions, when executed, cause the controlling device to receive from the smart device via the receiver a reprogramming data, sent by the smart device in response to the smart device receiving the orientation data, and to use the reprogramming data to reprogram a mapping between each of the plurality of input keys and a key id assigned to each of the plurality of input keys.

10. The controlling device as recited in claim 1 , wherein the switch comprises a dome switch.

11. The controlling device as recited in claim 1 , wherein the transmitter comprises an infrared transmitter.

12. A method performed by a controlling device having a plurality of input keys each comprising a switch for generating an activation signal when pressed by a user and a touch sensor for generating a touch data when touched by the user, the method comprising:

receiving a plurality of touch data from each one of a corresponding plurality of the plurality of input keys;

determining a one of the plurality of touch data that indicates a highest increase of a parasitic capacitance to ground value; and

transmitting to a smart device a first key id associated with a one of the corresponding plurality of the plurality of input keys from which is received the one of the plurality of touch data that indicates the highest increase of the parasitic capacitance to ground value.

13. The method as recited in claim 12 , further comprising, responsive to receiving an activation signal from the one of the corresponding plurality of the plurality of input keys from which is received the one of the plurality of touch data that indicates the highest increase of the parasitic capacitance to ground value, transmitting to the smart device a second key id associated with the one of the corresponding plurality of the plurality of input keys from which is received the one of the plurality of touch data that indicates the highest increase of the parasitic capacitance to ground value.

14. The method as recited in claim 13 , wherein the first key id is different than the second key id.

15. The method as recited in claim 12 , wherein the controlling device further comprises an orientation sensor coupled to the processing device and the method further comprises transmitting to the smart device an orientation data representative of an orientation of the controlling device as determined by use of the orientation sensor.

16. The method as recited in claim 15 , wherein the controlling device further comprises a receiver coupled to the processor, and the method further comprises receiving from the smart device via the receiver a reprogramming data, sent by the smart device in response to the smart device receiving the orientation data, and using the reprogramming data to reprogram a mapping between each of the plurality of input keys and a key id assigned to each of the plurality of input keys.
