Abstract

An apparatus and method for filtering molten metal (M), such as aluminum or an aluminum alloy includes at least one ceramic foam filter or any other type of filtration media such as porous tube or alumina balls disposed in a receptacle ( 12 ) for the molten metal (M). A vibrator vibrates at least one of the filter, the receptacle ( 12 ) or the metal and may be used to induce priming, filtering and/or drainage of the filter. The vibrator may be retrofitted to an existing filter system and may be adjustable in frequency and amplitude. The vibration may be continuous over a given period or produced in a single shock.

Claims (25)

1. A device, comprising:

a receptacle configured to hold molten metal, the receptacle having an inlet through which the molten metal may enter the receptacle and an outlet through which the molten metal may exit the receptacle;

a filter disposed within the receptacle and positioned between the inlet and the outlet, wherein the filter is capable of passing the molten metal there through; and

a vibrator configured to induce vibrations in the molten metal, wherein the vibrator contacts and acts on an exterior surface of the receptacle.

2. A method, comprising:

(A) pouring molten metal into a reservoir and onto a filter disposed within a receptacle; and

(B) vibrating at least one of the molten metal, the filter or the reservoir thereby inducing passage of the molten metal into pores of the filter and displacing air residing in the filter, thereby priming the filter, wherein the vibrating comprises vibrating at least one resilient element interposed between a refractory liner and a shell of the receptacle.

3. The device of claim 1 , wherein the vibrator generates a force with a direction between 45° and 90° relative to the direction of metal flow.

4. The device of claim 1 , wherein the vibrator does not contact the filter.

5. The device of claim 1 , wherein the receptacle has an inner liner that receives the molten metal and an outer shell.

6. The device of claim 5 , wherein the vibrator is mounted on an exterior surface of the outer shell.

7. The device of claim 5 , wherein the device comprises at least one resilient element interposed between the inner liner and the outer shell of the receptacle.

8. The device of claim 1 , wherein the filter is a ceramic foam filter.

9. The device of claim 1 , wherein the filter comprises a pore density of at least 40 ppi.

10. The device of claim 1 , wherein the filter comprises a pore density of at least 50 ppi.

11. The device of claim 1 , wherein the filter comprises a pore density of at least 60 ppi.

12. The device of claim 1 , wherein the filter comprises a pore density of at least 70 ppi.

13. The device of claim 1 , wherein the filter comprises a pore density of at least 80 ppi.

14. The device of claim 1 , wherein the filter is configured to remove aluminum oxides from the molten metal.

15. The method of claim 2 , wherein the vibrating comprises using at least one of a preselected first frequency and a preselected first magnitude.

16. The method of claim 15 , further comprising maintaining the at least one of the preselected first frequency and the preselected first magnitude during the vibrating step.

17. The method of claim 15 , further comprising, during the vibrating step, adjusting at least one of the first frequency and the first magnitude to a second frequency or a second magnitude, wherein the second frequency is different than the first frequency, and wherein the second magnitude is different than the first magnitude.

18. The method of claim 2 , further comprising, after the displacing step, terminating the vibrating step.

19. The method of claim 18 , further comprising, after the terminating step, filtering the molten metal through the filter.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein the filter is a first filter, wherein the filtering step comprises filtering the molten metal through a second filter located downstream of the first filter, wherein at least one of the first filter and the second filter comprises a pore density of at least 40 ppi.
