WEARABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICE
A consumer product that is a portable and, in some cases, a wearable electronic device. The wearable electronic device may have functionalities including: keeping time; monitoring a user's physiological signals and providing health-related information based on those signals; communicating with other electronic devices or services; visually depicting data on a display; gather data form one or more sensors that may be used to initiate, control, or modify operations of the device; determine a location of a touch on a surface of the device and/or an amount of force exerted on the device, and use either or both as input.

21 . A wearable electronic device comprising:
a housing defining a first opening and a second opening;
a band attached to the housing;
a cover subassembly positioned at least partially in the first opening and comprising:
a front cover defining at least a portion of a front exterior surface of the wearable electronic device; and
a touch-sensitive display positioned below the front cover;
a rear cover defining at least a portion of a rear exterior surface of the wearable electronic device;
a light source configured to emit light;
a detector configured to receive a reflected portion of the emitted light;
a first rear-facing electrode;
a second rear-facing electrode; and
a charging coil positioned within the housing and configured to receive wireless power through the rear cover.
22 . The wearable electronic device of claim 21 , further comprising a third electrode positioned at an exterior surface of the wearable electronic device.
23 . The wearable electronic device of claim 22 , wherein the third electrode is positioned along a top portion of the wearable electronic device.
24 . The wearable electronic device of claim 23 , wherein the wearable electronic device further comprises a processing unit operably coupled to the first rear-facing electrode, the second rear-facing electrode, and the third electrode and configured to determine a physiological parameter based at least in part on electrical signals received at the first rear-facing electrode, the second rear-facing electrode, and the third electrode.
25 . The wearable electronic device of claim 24 , wherein:
the physiological parameter is a first physiological parameter; and
the processing unit is further configured to determine a second physiological parameter based at least in part on the reflected portion of the emitted light.
26 . The wearable electronic device of claim 21 , further comprising a magnetic material at least partially within the housing and configured to magnetically attach the wearable electronic device to a charging dock.
27 . The wearable electronic device of claim 21 , wherein the rear cover includes:
a first window to transmit the light from the light source; and
a second window to receive the reflected portion of the emitted light.
28 . The wearable electronic device of claim 21 , wherein the light source is configured to emit green light.
29 . The wearable electronic device of claim 21 , wherein:
the rear cover defines a first portion of the rear exterior surface of the wearable electronic device; and
the housing comprises:
a top portion defining at least a portion of a side surface of the wearable electronic device; and
a bottom portion defining a second portion of the rear exterior surface of the wearable electronic device.
30 . The wearable electronic device of claim 21 , wherein:
the light source is a first light source; and
the wearable electronic device further comprises a second light source.
31 . The wearable electronic device of claim 30 , wherein:
the first light source is configured to emit light having a first wavelength range; and
the second light source is configured to emit light having a second wavelength range different from the first wavelength range.
32 . A wearable electronic device comprising:
a housing;
a band attached to the housing and configured to secure the wearable electronic device to a user;
a front cover defining at least a portion of a front exterior surface of the wearable electronic device;
a display positioned below the front cover;
a touch sensor configured to detect a touch input applied to the front cover;
a rear cover positioned at least partially in an opening along a rear of the housing and configured to face a wrist of a user;
an optical sensing system configured to detect a first physiological parameter of the user;
an electrical sensing system configured to detect a second physiological parameter of the user and comprising:
a first electrode configured to contact the wrist of the user; and
a second electrode configured to contact the wrist of the user; and
a charging coil positioned within the housing and configured to receive wireless power through the rear cover.
33 . The wearable electronic device of claim 32 , wherein the rear cover comprises an optically transparent material.
34 . The wearable electronic device of claim 32 , wherein the rear cover defines:
a first window configured to pass light emitted by a light source within the wearable electronic device; and
a second window configured to pass light reflected from the wrist of the user.
35 . The wearable electronic device of claim 32 , further comprising a third electrode configured to contact the user, wherein the electrical sensing system detects the second physiological parameter using the first electrode, the second electrode, and the third electrode.
36 . The wearable electronic device of claim 35 , wherein:
the first physiological parameter is at least one of a heart rate or a blood oxygenation level; and
the second physiological parameter is an electrocardiograph.
37 . The wearable electronic device of claim 32 , wherein the rear cover defines a convex exterior surface.
38 . The wearable electronic device of claim 37 , wherein the convex exterior surface is configured to mate with a concave surface of a wireless charging accessory.
39 . The wearable electronic device of claim 32 , wherein the optical sensing system comprises:
a first light emitter configured to emit first light having a first wavelength range toward the wrist of the user;
a second light emitter configured to emit second light having a second wavelength range different from the first wavelength range toward the wrist of the user; and
a detector configured to detect a reflected portion of at least the first light.
40 . The wearable electronic device of claim 39 , wherein:
the detector is a first detector; and
the optical sensing system further comprises a second detector configured to detect a reflected portion of at least the second light.
41 . An electronic watch comprising:
a housing comprising:
a top portion defining at least a portion of a side surface of the housing; and
a bottom portion defining at least a portion of a rear surface of the housing;
a front cover defining at least a portion of a front surface of the electronic watch;
a rear cover positioned at least partially in an opening defined in the bottom portion of the housing and defining a convex outer contour;
an optical sensing system configured to receive light reflected from a wrist of a user;
a first electrode configured to contact the wrist of the user;
a second electrode configured to contact the wrist of the user;
a charging coil configured to receive wireless power through the rear cover; and
a processing unit configured to determine a first physiological parameter based at least in part on the light reflected from the wrist of the user and to determine a second physiological parameter based at least in part on electrical measurements at the first electrode and the second electrode.
42 . The electronic watch of claim 41 , further comprising a touch-sensitive display positioned below the front cover and configured to display information associated with the first physiological parameter and the second physiological parameter.
43 . The electronic watch of claim 41 , wherein the optical sensing system is configured to operate as a photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor.
44 . The electronic watch of claim 41 , wherein the opening is a circular opening.
45 . The electronic watch of claim 44 , wherein the rear cover is a disk having a diameter that is larger than a diameter of the circular opening.
46 . The electronic watch of claim 41 , wherein the top portion of the housing and the bottom portion of the housing are portions of a unibody structure.
47 . The electronic watch of claim 41 , wherein:
the optical sensing system comprises:
a light emitter configured to emit light toward the wrist of the user; and
a light detector configured to receive the light reflected from the wrist of the user; and
the light reflected from the wrist of the user is a portion of the light emitted by the light emitter.
48 . The electronic watch of claim 47 , wherein:
the light emitter is a first light emitter; and
the optical sensing system further comprises a second light emitter.
49 . The electronic watch of claim 48 , wherein:
the light detector is a first light detector; and
the optical sensing system further comprises a second light detector.
