Abstract

Systems and methods are described for adapting a second user input device to resemble a first user input device while preserving new functionalities not available in the first user input device. The systems and methods may identify, based on identifiers of the first and second user input devices, a first and second set of device functionalities provided by the devices. The systems and methods may compare the sets of device functionalities to determine a set of common device functionalities and, in response, modify the display of an input of the second user input device to correspond to visual attributes of an input of the first user input device.

Claims (47)

1. A method comprising:

receiving a request to modify a display of inputs for a third input device, wherein the display of inputs correspond to a plurality of functionalities for a user interface of the third input device;

determining that a user associated with the third input device has previously used a first input device and a second input device;

selecting, based on a factor, between the first input device and the second input device for mapping a visual attribute onto the third input device;

based on the selection, replacing a first visual attribute of the third input device that corresponds to a first functionality of the plurality of functionalities for the user interface of the third input device with the visual attribute of the first input device or the second input device;

determining that the first functionality of the third input device matches a first functionality of the first input device; and

replacing the visual attribute associated with the first functionality of the third input device with the visual attribute associated with the first functionality of the first input device in response to the determining that the first functionality of the third input device matches the first functionality of the first input device.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the factor for selecting between the first input device and the second input device is earlier in time.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the factor for selecting between the first input device and the second input device is which device was first used for more than a threshold amount of time.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the factor for selecting between the first input device and the second input device is cumulative amount of time that an input device has been powered on.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the factor for selecting between the first input device and the second input device is number of times that an input device has been powered on.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the third input device is a tablet computer device and the first input device and the second input device are remote control devices.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

retrieving a listing of user input devices associated with the user from a user profile associated with the user; and

determining that the user associated with the third input device has previously used the first input device and the second input device based on information in the user profile.

8. A method comprising:

receiving a request to modify a display of inputs for a third input device, wherein the display of inputs correspond to a plurality of functionalities for a user interface of the third input device;

determining that a user associated with the third input device has previously used a first input device and a second input device;

determining a timestamp of last use of the first input device and the second input device;

selecting, based on a factor, between the first input device and the second input device for mapping a visual attribute onto the third input device, wherein the factor for selecting between the first input device and the second input device is earlier in time;

determining that the timestamp of last use for the first input device precedes the timestamp of last use for the second input device;

based on the determining that the timestamp of last use for the first input device is earlier in time than the timestamp of last use for the second input device, selecting the first input device for mapping the visual attribute of the first input device onto the third input device; and

based on the selecting the first input device, replacing a first visual attribute of the third input device that corresponds to a first functionality of the plurality of functionalities for the user interface of the third input device with the visual attribute of the first input device.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the timestamp is represented by a Unix epoch; and

the method further comprising executing an arithmetic relational comparison to determine that a first value of the timestamp associated with the first input device precedes a second value of the timestamp associated with the second input device.

10. A system comprising:

control circuitry configured to:

receive a request to modify a display of inputs for a third input device, wherein the display of inputs correspond to a plurality of functionalities for a user interface of the third input device;

determine that a user associated with the third input device has previously used a first input device and a second input device;

select, based on a factor, between the first input device and the second input device for mapping a visual attribute onto the third input device;

based on the selection, replace a first visual attribute of the third input device that corresponds to a first functionality of the plurality of functionalities for the user interface of the third input device with the visual attribute of the first input device or the second input device;

determine that the first functionality of the third input device matches a first functionality of the first input device; and

replace the visual attribute associated with the first functionality of the third input device with the visual attribute associated with the first functionality of the first input device in response to the determining that first functionality of the third input device matches the first functionality of the first input device.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the factor for selecting between the first input device and the second input device is earlier in time.

12. The system of claim 11 , further comprising, the control circuitry configured to:

determine a timestamp of last use of the first input device and the second input device;

determining that the timestamp of last use for the first input device precedes the timestamp of last use for the second input device; and

based on the determining that the timestamp of last use for the first input device is earlier in time than the timestamp of last use for the second input device, select the first input device for mapping the visual attribute of the first input device onto the third input device.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the timestamp is represented by a Unix epoch; and

the system further comprising, the control circuitry configured to execute an arithmetic relational comparison to determine that a first value of the timestamp associated with the first input device precedes a second value of the timestamp associated with the second input device.

14. The system of claim 10 , wherein the factor for selecting between the first input device and the second input device is which device was first used for more than a threshold amount of time.

15. The system of claim 10 , wherein the factor for selecting between the first input device and the second input device is cumulative amount of time that an input device has been powered on.

16. The system of claim 10 , wherein the factor for selecting between the first input device and the second input device is number of times that an input device has been powered on.

17. The system of claim 10 , wherein the third input device is a tablet computer device and the first input device and the second input device are remote control devices.

18. The system of claim 10 , further comprising, the control circuitry configured to:

retrieve a listing of user input devices associated with the user from a user profile associated with the user; and

determine that the user associated with the third input device has previously used the first input device and the second input device based on information in the user profile.
