Abstract

A configurable input element of a controlling device is configured by using a data representative of an over-the-top (OTT) media app determined to be installed on an OTT device and a data representative of the OTT device to identify at least one command that is required to be transmitted to cause the OTT device to launch the OTT media app. The at least one command is provisioned to the controlling device and assigned to the configurable input element. When the input element is subsequently activated, the controlling device will transmit the at least one command to cause the OTT device to launch the OTT media app.

Claims (32)

1. A smart device, comprising:

a processing device;

a memory storing instructions which, when executed by the processing device, cause the smart device to perform steps for configuring a controlling device application, the steps comprising:

determining a presence of an over-the-top (OTT) media streaming device within an ecosystem which includes the smart device;

determining a presence of a first OTT app usable to stream a media installed on the OTT media streaming device;

using the determined presence of the first OTT app usable to stream a media and the determined presence of the OTT media streaming device to identify at least one command that is required to be transmitted to the OTT media streaming device to cause the OTT media streaming device to launch the first OTT app usable to stream a media installed on the OTT media streaming device; and

causing the controlling device application to assign the at least one command to a configurable input element of a user interface associated with the controlling device application whereupon the controlling device application will respond to an activation of the configurable input element by causing the at least one command to be transmitted to the OTT device to cause the OTT media streaming device to launch the first OTT app usable to stream a media installed on the OTT media streaming device.

2. The smart device as recited in claim 1 , wherein the controlling device application is installed on the smart device.

3. The smart device as recited in claim 1 , wherein the instructions further cause the smart device to use the data representative of the OTT media streaming device to identify a further device on which the controlling device application is installed.

4. The smart device as recited in claim 3 , wherein the further device comprises an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) remote control provided for use specifically with at least the OTT media streaming device.

5. The smart device as recited in claim 4 , wherein the OTT media streaming device comprises a set-top box.

6. The smart device as recited in claim 1 , wherein the at least one command comprises a sequence of menu navigation commands for indirectly launching the first OTT app usable to stream a media installed on the OTT media streaming device.

7. The smart device as recited in claim 1 , wherein the at least one command comprises a command to directly launch the first OTT app usable to stream a media installed on the OTT media streaming device.

8. The smart device as recited in claim 1 , wherein the smart device receives from the OTT media streaming device a first data representative of the first OTT app usable to stream a media determined to be installed on the OTT media streaming device and a second data representative of the OTT media streaming device and wherein the instructions cause the smart device to use the first and second data to identify the at least one further command.

9. The smart device as recited in claim 1 , wherein the instruction cause the smart device to search a data repository associated with a cloud server to at least determine the presence of the first OTT app usable to stream a media installed on the OTT media streaming device.

10. The smart device as recited in claim 1 , wherein the instructions cause the smart device to search a data repository associated with the OTT media streaming device to at least determine the presence of the first OTT app usable to stream a media installed on the OTT media streaming device.

11. The smart device as recited in claim 1 , wherein the configurable input element of the user interface comprises a soft key and the instructions cause the smart device to provide to the remote control application data for automatically installing the soft key as a part of the user interface.

12. A non-transitory, computer-readable media having stored thereon instruction executable by a smart device, the instructions cause the smart device to perform steps comprising:

determining a presence of an over-the-top (OTT) media streaming device within an ecosystem which includes the smart device;

determining a presence of a first OTT app usable to stream a media installed on the OTT media streaming device;

using the determined presence of the first OTT app usable to stream a media and the determined presence of the OTT media streaming device to identify at least one command that is required to be transmitted to the OTT media streaming device to cause the OTT media streaming device to launch the first OTT app usable to stream a media installed on the OTT media streaming device; and

causing the controlling device application to assign the at least one command to a configurable input element of a user interface associated with the controlling device application whereupon the controlling device application will respond to an activation of the configurable input element by causing the at least one command to be transmitted to the OTT device to cause the OTT media streaming device to launch the first OTT app usable to stream a media installed on the OTT media streaming device.

13. The non-transitory, computer-readable media as recited in claim 12 , wherein the controlling device application is installed on the smart device.

14. The non-transitory, computer-readable media as recited in claim 12 , wherein the instructions further cause the smart device to use the data representative of the OTT media streaming device to identify a further device on which the controlling device application is installed.

15. The non-transitory, computer-readable media as recited in claim 14 , wherein the further device comprises an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) remote control provided for use specifically with at least the OTT media streaming device.

16. The non-transitory, computer-readable media as recited in claim 15 , wherein the OTT media streaming device comprises a set-top box.

17. The non-transitory, computer-readable media as recited in claim 12 , wherein the at least one command comprises a sequence of menu navigation commands for indirectly launching the first OTT app usable to stream a media installed on the OTT media streaming device.

18. The non-transitory, computer-readable media as recited in claim 12 , wherein the at least one command comprises a command to directly launch the first OTT app usable to stream a media installed on the OTT media streaming device.

19. The non-transitory, computer-readable media as recited in claim 12 , wherein the smart device receives from the OTT media streaming device a first data representative of the first OTT app usable to stream a media determined to be installed on the OTT media streaming device and a second data representative of the OTT media streaming device and wherein the instructions cause the smart device to use the first and second data to identify the at least one further command.

20. The non-transitory, computer-readable media as recited in claim 12 , wherein the instruction cause the smart device to search a data repository associated with a cloud server to at least determine the presence of the first OTT app usable to stream a media installed on the OTT media streaming device.

21. The non-transitory, computer-readable media as recited in claim 12 , wherein the instructions cause the smart device to search a data repository associated with the OTT media streaming device to at least determine the presence of the first OTT app usable to stream a media installed on the OTT media streaming device.

22. The non-transitory, computer-readable media as recited in claim 12 , wherein the configurable input element of the user interface comprises a soft key and the instructions cause the smart device to provide to the remote control application data for automatically installing the soft key as a part of the user interface.
