Abstract

Systems and methods are described for translating a non-playback command into a playback modification to encourage a recipient of the command to execute on the command. A media guidance application may determine a command from a first user to a second user. The media guidance application may compare the command to a set of playback operation commands for a media asset that is currently being played back. The media guidance application may determine that the command is not contained within the set of playback operation commands. In response to determining that the command is not contained within the set of commands, the media guidance application may determine whether the second user executes a desired outcome of the command. And in response to determining that the second user does not execute the desired outcome of the command, the media guidance application may determine whether to modify playback of the media asset.

Claims (38)

1 . A method comprising:

while media content is being provided to a second user by way of a device:

receiving, via one or more microphones in a viewing environment of the device providing the media content, a first input from a first user, wherein when the first input is received, the first user is located outside of the viewing environment in which the media content is being provided by way of the device;

determining at least one prevented playback operation based on the first input;

receiving, from the second user and after the first input is received, a second input indicating a requested playback operation in relation to the media content;

determining whether the at least one prevented playback operation comprises the requested playback operation;

determining whether a first rank associated with the first user is higher than a second rank of the second user; and

based on determining the at least one prevented playback operation comprises the requested playback operation and that the first rank associated with the first user is higher than the second rank of the second user, preventing the requested playback operation.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first rank comprises an adult ranking and the second rank comprises a child ranking.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first input from the first user comprises a command to the second user.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the second input indicating the requested playback operation from the second user is received by the device, and wherein the device comprises the one or more microphones.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the second input indicating the requested playback operation from the second user is received by the device, and wherein the device is in communication with, but separate from, another device comprising the one or more microphones.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first input is speech input received from the first user, and determining the at least one prevented playback operation based on the first input comprises determining one or more keywords based on performing speech recognition of the speech input received from the first user.

7 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the determining at least one prevented playback operation based on the first input is further based on tone of the speech input received from the first user.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one prevented playback operation based on the first input comprises at least one command selected from the following: play, unmute, volume change, rewind, fast-forward, or turn on.

9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first input from the first user causes execution of at least one command selected from the following: pause, mute, or turn off.

10 . A system comprising:

input/output circuitry configured to:

while media content is being provided to a second user by way of a device:

receive, via one or more microphones in a viewing environment of the device providing the media content, a first input from a first user, wherein when the first input is received, the first user is located outside the viewing environment in which the media content is being provided by way of the device;

receive, from the second user and after the first input is received, a second input indicating a requested playback operation in relation to the media content;

one or more processors configured to:

while the media content is being provided to the second user:

determine at least one prevented playback operation based on the first input;

determine whether the at least one prevented playback operation comprises the requested playback operation;

determine whether a first rank associated with the first user is higher than a second rank of the second user; and

based on determining the at least one prevented playback operation comprises the requested playback operation and that the first rank associated with the first user is higher than the second rank of the second user, prevent the requested playback operation.

11 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the first rank comprises an adult ranking and the second rank comprises a child ranking, and the first input from the first user comprises a command to the second user.

12 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the second input indicating the requested playback operation from the second user is received by the device, and wherein the device comprises the one or more microphones.

13 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the second input indicating the requested playback operation from the second user is received by the device, and wherein the device is in communication with, but separate from, another device comprising the one or more microphones.

14 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the first input is speech input received from the first user, and the one or more processors, when determining the at least one prevented playback operation based on the first input, are further configured to determine one or more keywords based on performing speech recognition of the speech input received from the first user.

15 . The system of claim 14 , wherein the one or more processors are further configured to determine the at least one prevented playback operation further based on tone of the speech input received from the first user.

16 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the at least one prevented playback operation based on the first input comprises at least one command selected from the following: play, unmute, volume change, rewind, fast-forward, or turn on.

17 . The method of claim 1 , wherein a request to access the media content is received from the second user prior to the first input being received from the first user, and each of the request to access the media content, the first input, and the second input is received on a same day.

18 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the second user is within the viewing environment of the device displaying the media content when the second input is received, and the first input is received from the first user while the first user is outside the viewing environment.

19 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first input is received at a first playback location of the media content, and the second input is received at a second playback location of the media content, wherein the first playback location is earlier than the second playback location.

20 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining a set of commands associated with playing the media content, wherein preventing the requested playback operation is further based on determining that the first input is indicative of a command and that the set of commands associated with playing the media content does not comprise the command.
