Abstract

Systems and methods for generating for display an interactive interface based on user history are provided. A first media asset and second media asset share a common attribute but are displayed with different display properties because the first media asset is included in the viewing history of the user while the second media asset is not. This display property may include moving the first media asset to a different portion of the guide.

Claims (66)

1. A method comprising:

automatically retrieving, by control circuitry, a viewing history of video assets previously accessed by a user;

comparing, by the control circuitry, the viewing history of video assets previously accessed by the user with a plurality of video assets;

determining, by the control circuitry, that a first video asset is included in the viewing history of video assets previously accessed by the user and that a second video asset is not included in the viewing history of video assets previously accessed by the user, wherein a first metadata of the first video asset and a second metadata of the second video asset comprise a common attribute;

in response to determining, by the control circuitry, that a first video asset is included in the viewing history of video assets previously accessed by the user and that a second video asset is not included in the viewing history of video assets previously accessed by the user:

generating for simultaneous display, by the control circuitry:

a first user interface element associated with the first video asset in a first list of video assets, wherein each video asset in the first list of video assets has been previously accessed by the user,

a visual indicator that indicates that each video asset in the first list of video assets has been previously accessed by the user, and

a second user interface element associated with the second video asset in a second list of video assets, wherein the first list is different from the second list.

The method of claim 1 , wherein the generating for display a second user interface element associated with the second video asset in a second list of video assets further comprises: determining that the first user interface element was generated for display in the first list; and in response to the determining, excluding the first user interface element from the second list.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the determining comprises:

selecting a first attribute associated with the first metadata of the first video asset;

selecting a candidate second attribute associated with the second metadata of the second video asset;

comparing the first attribute to the candidate second attribute to determine whether a value of relatedness between the first attribute and the candidate second attribute exceeds a relatedness threshold; and

in response to determining that the value of relatedness between the first attribute and the candidate second attribute exceeds the relatedness threshold, designating the candidate second attribute as the common attribute.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the retrieving a viewing history of video assets previously accessed by a user is from a first application, and further comprising:

retrieving user profile data from a second application; and

selecting the second video asset from the plurality of video assets based at least in part on the user profile data.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the common attribute may be any one of title, actor, director, genre, rating, or a keyword.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the video asset may be a television show, movie, or a sports game.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first user interface element has a same number of visual objects as the second user interface element.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising, cross-referencing, with a database, an attribute of the first video asset to obtain the second video asset having the common attribute.

9. A system comprising:

control circuitry configured to:

automatically retrieve, by the control circuitry, a viewing history of video assets previously accessed by a user;

compare the viewing history of video assets previously accessed by the user with a plurality of video assets;

determine that a first video asset is included in the viewing history of video assets previously accessed by the user and that a second video asset is not included in the viewing history of video assets previously accessed by the user, wherein a first metadata of the first video asset and a second metadata of the second video asset comprise a common attribute;

in response to determining that a first video asset is included in the viewing history of video assets previously accessed by the user and that a second video asset is not included in the viewing history of video assets previously accessed by the user:

generate for simultaneous display, using by the control circuitry:

a first user interface element associated with the first video asset in a first list of video assets, wherein each video asset in the first list of video assets has been previously accessed by the user,

a visual indicator that indicates that each video asset in the first list of video assets has been previously accessed by the user, and

a second user interface element associated with the second video asset in a second list of video assets, wherein the first list is different from the second list.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the input/output circuitry is further configured to generate for display a second user interface element associated with the second video asset in a second list of video assets by:

determining that the first user interface element was generated for display in the first list; and

in response to the determining, excluding the first user interface element from the second list.

11. The system of claim 9 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to determine the first video asset and the second video asset by:

selecting a first attribute associated with the first metadata of the first video asset;

selecting a candidate second attribute associated with the second metadata of the second video asset;

comparing the first attribute with the candidate second attribute to determine whether a value of relatedness between the first attribute and the candidate second attribute exceeds a relatedness threshold; and

in response to determining that the value of relatedness between the first attribute and the candidate second attribute exceeds the relatedness threshold, designating the candidate second attribute as the common attribute.

12. The system of claim 9 wherein the retrieving a viewing history of video assets previously accessed by a user is from a first application, and the control circuitry further configured to:

retrieve user profile data from a second application; and

select the second video asset from the plurality of video assets based at least in part on the user profile data.

13. The system of claim 9 , wherein the common attribute may be any one of title, actor, director, genre, rating, or a keyword.

14. The system of claim 9 , wherein the video asset may be a television show, movie, or a sports game.

15. The system of claim 9 , wherein the first user interface element has a same number of visual objects as the second user interface element.

16. The system of claim 9 , further comprising, control circuitry further configured to cross-reference, with a database, an attribute of the first video asset to obtain the second video asset having the common attribute.

17. A non-transitory computer readable medium comprising, instructions that when executed by control circuitry cause the control circuitry to:

retrieve a viewing history of video assets previously accessed by a user;

compare the viewing history of video assets previously accessed by the user with a plurality of video assets;

determine that a first video asset is included in the viewing history of video assets previously accessed by the user and that a second video asset is not included in the viewing history of video assets previously accessed by the user, wherein a first metadata of the first video asset and a second metadata of the second video asset comprise a common attribute;

in response to determining that a first video asset is included in the viewing history of video assets previously accessed by the user and that a second video asset is not included in the viewing history of video assets previously accessed by the user:

generate for simultaneous display, using by the control circuitry;

a first user interface element associated with the first video asset in a first list of video assets, wherein each video asset in the first list of video assets has been previously accessed by the user,

a visual indicator that indicates that each video asset in the first list of video assets has been previously accessed by the user, and

a second user interface element associated with the second video asset in a second list of video assets, wherein the first list is different from the second list.

18. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 17 , wherein the instructions cause the input/output circuitry to generate for display a second user interface element associated with the second video asset in a second list of video assets by:

determining that the first user interface element was generated for display in the first list; and in response to the determining, excluding the first user interface element from the second list.

19. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 17 , wherein the instructions cause the control circuitry to determine the first video asset and the second video asset by:

selecting a first attribute associated with the first metadata of the first video asset;

selecting a candidate second attribute associated with the second metadata of the second video asset;

comparing the first attribute with the candidate second attribute to determine whether a value of relatedness between the first attribute and the candidate second attribute exceeds a relatedness threshold; and

in response to determining that the value of relatedness between the first attribute and the candidate second attribute exceeds the relatedness threshold, designating the candidate second attribute as the common attribute.

20. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 17 wherein the retrieving a viewing history of video assets previously accessed by a user is from a first application, and further comprising instructions to:

retrieve user profile data from a second application; and

select the second video asset from the plurality of video assets based at least in part on the user profile data.
