Abstract

The present disclosure is directed to distributing processing capabilities throughout different nodes in a wireless mesh network. Methods and apparatus consistent with the present disclosure increase the efficiency of communications in a wireless mesh network because they help minimize the need to forward communications to other nodes in the wireless mesh network such that an evaluation can be performed. Apparatus and methods consistent with the present disclosure may distribute ratings or verdicts associated with previous requests to access data to different nodes in a wireless mesh network without generating additional wireless communications through the wireless mesh network. Apparatus and methods consistent with the present disclosure distribute content ratings to different nodes in a wireless network such that different wireless nodes may block redundant requests to undesired content without increasing messaging traffic.

Claims (39)

1. A method for preventing access to undesired content, the method comprising:

receiving a request to access content at a first wireless mesh node, the request identifying a content source device;

determining that information associated with the request does not have a match in contents stored in a first cache memory of the first wireless mesh node, wherein matching content was previously removed from the first cache memory based on an expiration of a first time-to-live time associated with the first cache memory, and wherein the first time-to-live time is based on a number of hops from a mesh portal;

transmitting the request to a second wireless mesh node;

determining that the information associated with the request matches a result stored in a second cache memory of the second wireless mesh node, wherein the result remains in the second cache memory longer than in the first cache memory based on the second wireless mesh node being a fewer number of hops from the mesh portal than the first wireless mesh node; and

rejecting the request based on the matching result stored in the second cache memory.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising promoting the first wireless mesh node to be a wireless mesh portal after receiving the request to access the content.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first wireless mesh node and the second wireless mesh node include respective time-to-live times that are each less than a mesh portal time-to-live time associated with the mesh portal.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the expiration of the first time-to-live time is based on a start time stored at the first wireless mesh node.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein transmitting the request to the second wireless mesh node is based on a set of rules corresponding to an optimal path within a mesh network that includes the first wireless mesh node, the second wireless mesh node, and the mesh portal.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the set of rules includes a signal-strength measurement rule, and wherein a communication channel between the first wireless mesh node and the second wireless mesh node satisfies the signal-strength measurement rule.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the number of hops between the mesh portal and the first wireless mesh node is adjusted after a failure of a third wireless mesh node.

8. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium having embodied thereon a program executable by a processor for implementing a method, the method comprising:

receiving a request to access content at a first wireless mesh node, the request identifying a content source device;

determining that information associated with the request does not have a match in contents stored in a first cache memory of the first wireless mesh node, wherein matching content was previously removed from the first cache memory based on an expiration of a first time-to-live time associated with the first cache memory, and wherein the first time-to-live time is based on a number of hops from a mesh portal;

transmitting the request to a second wireless mesh node;

determining that the information associated with the request matches a result stored in a second cache memory of the second wireless mesh node, wherein the result remains in the second cache memory longer than in the first cache memory based on the second wireless mesh node being a fewer number of hops from the mesh portal than the first wireless mesh node; and

rejecting the request based on the matching result stored in the second cache memory.

9. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 8 , further comprising instructions executable to promote the first wireless mesh node to be a wireless mesh portal after receiving the request to access the content.

10. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 8 , wherein the first wireless mesh node and the second wireless mesh node include respective time-to-live times that are each less than a mesh portal time-to-live time associated with the mesh portal.

11. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 8 , wherein the expiration of the first time-to-live time is based on a start time stored at the first wireless mesh node.

12. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 8 , wherein transmitting the request to the second wireless mesh node is based on a set of rules corresponding to an optimal path within a mesh network that includes the first wireless mesh node, the second wireless mesh node, and the mesh portal.

13. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 12 , wherein the set of rules includes a signal-strength measurement rule, and wherein a communication channel between the first wireless mesh node and the second wireless mesh node satisfies the signal-strength measurement rule.

14. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 8 , wherein the number of hops between the mesh portal and the first wireless mesh node is adjusted after a failure of a third wireless mesh node.

15. An apparatus for preventing access to undesired content, the apparatus comprising:

a wireless data communication interface of a first wireless mesh node that receives a request to access content, the request identifying a content source device;

a memory;

a first cache memory; and

a processor that executes instructions stored in the memory to:

receive the request to access the content at the first wireless mesh node;

determine that information associated with the request does not have a match in contents stored in the first cache memory of the first wireless mesh node, wherein matching content was previously removed from the first cache memory based on an expiration of a first time-to-live time associated with the first cache memory, and wherein the first time-to-live time is based on a number of hops from a mesh portal;

transmit the request to a second wireless mesh node;

determine that the information associated with the request matches a result stored in a second cache memory of the second wireless mesh node, wherein the result remains in the second cache memory longer than in the first cache memory based on the second wireless mesh node being a fewer number of hops from the mesh portal than the first wireless mesh node; and

reject the request based on the matching result stored in the second cache memory.

16. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the processor executes further instructions to promote the first wireless mesh node to be a wireless mesh portal after receiving the request to access the content.

17. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the first wireless mesh node and the second wireless mesh node include respective time-to-live times that are each less than a mesh portal time-to-live time associated with the mesh portal.

18. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein transmitting the request to the second wireless mesh node is based on a set of rules corresponding to an optimal path within a mesh network that includes the first wireless mesh node, the second wireless mesh node, and the mesh portal.

19. The apparatus of claim 18 , wherein the set of rules includes a signal-strength measurement rule, and wherein a communication channel between the first wireless mesh node and the second wireless mesh node satisfies the signal-strength measurement rule.

20. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the number of hops between the mesh portal and the first wireless mesh node is adjusted after a failure of a third wireless mesh node.
