Abstract

Disclosed are various embodiments of systems and methods that facilitate printer calibration. According to certain embodiments, calibration methods comprise a printer printing a calibration target and cutting a calibration target using an inline slitter. The printer then determines a calibration offset based on the position of the cut on the calibration target. The printer can then be calibrated according to gross amounts on the slitter and fine amounts at an ink applicator.

Claims (24)

1. A computer-implemented method for operating a printer comprising:

providing a controller, an edge detector, and one or more inline slitters attached to a slitter bracket associated with the printer;

using the edge detector to determine a lateral position of a print medium along a transport path of the printer;

using the controller to move the one or more inline slitter attached to the slitter bracket to an appropriate position for a desired cut; and

using the edge detector to make calibration adjustments in real-time.

2. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the edge detector is a linear or area array optical sensor that monitors an absolute and relative position of a print medium edge as the print medium is transported through the printer to verify that the print medium is tracking properly and to identify problem conditions such as media transport skew.

3. The computer-implemented method of claim 2 , further comprising using the edge detector to determine a leading edge of the print medium.

4. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more inline slitters comprise at least one selected from the group consisting of: a cutting blade, a circular cutting blade, a kiss-cutting blade, a perforation blade, a creasing blade, a scoring blade, and other means for dividing the print medium.

5. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising moving the one or more inline slitters laterally using a rack and pinion gear arrangement driven by a means selected from the group consisting of: a stepper motor, a conventional motor, encoder wheels, and variable resistors to control a position of the one or more inline slitters.

6. The computer-implemented method of claim 5 , further comprising positioning the one or more inline slitters at different locations along the transport path such that each of the one or more slitters can move independently.

7. The computer-implemented method of claim 5 , wherein the one or more inline slitters are mounted on one or more mounting shafts for moving the one or more inline slitters.

8. The computer-implemented method of claim 7 , further comprising preventing movement of the one or more slitters engaged with the print medium with a shaft lock associated with each of the one or more slitters and the one or more mounting shafts.

9. The computer-implemented method of claim 7 , further comprising engaging the one or more slitters with detents positioned at fixed intervals of the one or more mounting shafts to stabilize the one or more slitters.

10. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the printer and print medium are provided in a kiosk, and wherein the print medium is selected from the group consisting of: individual sheets, pieces of print medium, and a large roll that is fed into the printer.

11. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising digitally adjusting an ink application process left or right by a number of pixels corresponding to the calibration adjustments.

12. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising removing a section of material from the print medium using the one or more inline slitters.

13. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more inline slitters are positioned outside of the transport path to disable the one or more inline slitter.

14. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising directing the print medium along an alternate transport path for full-width prints.

15. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more inline slitters comprise a locating boss or stud to interface with the slitter bracket for large adjustments.

16. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising determining a current position of the one or more slitters.

17. The computer-implemented method of claim 16 , wherein the current position of the one or more slitters is determined by a stepper motor or an encoder wheel.

18. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the edge detector is a mechanical edge detector.

19. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the calibration adjustments comprise changing the slitter bracket positions to de-skew an image or create customizable edge shapes.

20. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising creating, by the one or more slitters, perforations, creases, or scores on the print medium.
