Abstract

A safety intravenous catheter that includes a passive release feature. The catheter assembly includes ready, safe, and released positions. In the release position, a retainer being in a proximal retainer position relative to a collar enables release of the catheter hub from the catheter insertion device. The sharp tip of the insertion needle remains inaccessible in the release position in order to prevent unwanted needle sticks.

Claims (29)

1. A safety catheter assembly, comprising:

a catheter hub assembly including a catheter hub having an open proximal end and a distal end having a catheter extending distally therefrom, the catheter hub having an interior cavity defined between the open proximal end and the distal end;

a needle having a sharp distal tip extending distally from a needle hub, the needle adapted to slidably extend through the catheter hub into the catheter such that the distal tip extends beyond the distal end of the catheter when the safety catheter assembly is in a ready position;

a collar having an open distal end and a proximal end positioned between the catheter hub assembly and the needle hub, an upright extending upwardly from the top of a distal portion of the collar, the distal end of the collar opens into a chamber adapted to receive the proximal end of the catheter hub;

a needle tip protector at least partially housed in the collar, the needle movable through the needle tip protector between the ready position and a safe position wherein the distal tip of the needle is non-removably captured in the needle tip protector;

wherein in the ready position, the proximal end of the catheter hub is in the chamber of the collar and the collar and the catheter hub are in fixed engagement with each other; and

wherein in the safe position, the collar and the catheter hub are separable from each other.

2. The safety catheter assembly of claim 1 , wherein the collar has the distal portion and a proximal portion, the chamber in the collar is separated into a distal chamber and a proximal chamber, the distal chamber having a cross dimension larger than a cross dimension of the proximal chamber, a retainer movably positioned in the proximal chamber, the retainer including a base having a through bore for receiving a proximal portion of the needle tip protector, the retainer movable from a distal position of the proximal chamber wherein the collar and the catheter hub are engaged to each other to a proximal position of the proximal chamber wherein the catheter hub and the collar are separable from each other.

3. The safety catheter assembly of claim 1 , wherein the needle tip protector comprises an inner member slidably movable along an outer member, the outer member having an open distal end and a proximal end having an opening to enable the needle to pass through, the inner member having a pair of arms extending in a radially outward direction away from each other when the arms are biased by the needle passing therebetween, the arms collapse toward each other to capture the distal tip of the needle in the safe position when the needle is moved proximally relative to the collar and the distal tip of the needle is proximal to the arms.

4. The safety catheter assembly of claim 3 , wherein the needle includes a transition proximal the distal tip of the needle, the transition having a dimension that prevents a portion of the needle from the distal tip to the transition from passing through the opening at the proximal end of the outer member when the needle is moved proximally relative to the collar, wherein the distal tip of the needle is captured in the needle tip protector when the transition makes contact with the opening.

5. The safety catheter assembly of claim 1 , wherein the upright is flush with the distal end of the collar.

6. The safety catheter assembly of claim 5 , wherein the upright has a distal front surface that is flush with the distal end of the collar and a proximal back surface.

7. The safety catheter assembly of claim 2 , wherein the needle tip protector has a distal portion that extends into the catheter hub in the ready position, the outer member having an upraised portion that when biased by the arms biased outwardly by the needle, comes into abutment contact with an internal shoulder at the catheter hub to prevent the needle tip protector from separating from the catheter hub.

8. The safety catheter assembly of claim 1 , wherein in the ready position, a proximal portion including the proximal end of the catheter hub is positioned in the distal chamber of the collar.

9. A safety catheter assembly, comprising:

a catheter hub including an open proximal end and a distal end having a catheter extending distally therefrom, the catheter hub having an interior cavity defined between the open proximal end and the distal end;

a needle having a sharp distal tip extending distally from a needle hub, the needle adapted to slidably extend through the catheter hub into the catheter such that the distal tip extends beyond the distal end of the catheter when the safety catheter assembly is in a ready position;

a collar having an open distal end and a proximal end positioned between the catheter hub assembly and the needle hub, the collar having a distal portion and a proximal portion, an upright extending upwardly from the top of the distal portion of the collar, the distal end of the collar opens into a distal chamber and a proximal chamber, the distal chamber adapted to receive the proximal end of the catheter hub; and

a needle tip protector received in the distal and proximal chambers, the needle movable through the needle tip protector between the ready position and a safe position wherein the distal tip of the needle is non-removably captured in the needle tip protector.

10. The safety catheter assembly of claim 9 , wherein the distal portion of the collar includes a notch and the proximal end of the catheter hub includes at least one lug;

wherein in the ready position, the notch at the collar and the one lug at the proximal end of the catheter hub are in fixed engagement with each other; and

wherein in the safe position, the notch and the one lug are released from each other and the collar and the catheter hub are separable from each other.

11. The safety catheter assembly of claim 9 , further comprising a retainer movably positioned in the proximal chamber, the retainer including a base having a bore for receiving a proximal portion of the needle tip protector; wherein the retainer is at a distal position in the proximal chamber when the safety catheter assembly is in the ready position and at a proximal position when the safety catheter assembly is in the safe position.

12. The safety catheter assembly of claim 9 , wherein the upright is flush with the distal end of the collar.

13. The safety catheter assembly of claim 12 , wherein the upright has a distal front surface that is flush with the distal end of the collar and a proximal back surface.

14. The safety catheter assembly of claim 9 , wherein the needle tip protector comprises an inner member slidably movable along an outer member, the outer member having an open distal end and a proximal end having an opening to enable the needle to pass through, the inner member having a pair of arms extending in a radially outward direction away from each other when the arms are biased by the needle passing therebetween, the arms collapse toward each other to capture the distal tip of the needle in the safe position when the needle is moved proximally relative to the collar and the distal tip of the needle is proximal the arms.

15. The safety catheter assembly of claim 9 , wherein the needle includes a transition proximal the distal tip of the needle, the transition having a dimension that prevents a portion of the needle from the distal tip to the transition from passing through a proximal end opening at the proximal portion of the needle tip protector when the needle is moved proximally relative to the collar, wherein the distal tip of the needle is captured in the needle tip protector when the transition makes contact with the proximal end opening.

16. The safety catheter assembly of claim 9 , wherein the needle tip protector has a distal portion that extends into the catheter hub in the ready position, the outer member having an upraised portion that when biased by the arms biased outwardly by the needle, comes into abutment contact with an internal shoulder at the catheter hub to prevent the needle tip protector from separating from the catheter hub.

17. The safety catheter assembly of claim 9 , wherein in the ready position, a proximal portion including the proximal end of the catheter hub is positioned in the distal chamber of the collar.
