Abstract

Systems and methods for automatically determining when a single party is playing or requesting conflicting content on two different devices, and resolving the conflict accordingly. Systems automatically identify when a single user is playing back a content stream on one device, then requests another content stream on another device. If the two content streams conflict, the conflict is automatically resolved in a number of ways, including by automatically pausing or redirecting one of the content streams. Conflict identification may also be carried out with the assistance of an added state flag that indicates a device or stream that has audio priority in a conflict. Thus, for example, when one user requests two conflicting content streams, and only one stream is associated with the conditional audio enabled flag, audio of the flagged stream may be played, while the other stream is muted.

Claims (45)

1. A method comprising:

determining that a first content item is playing on a first device;

receiving a user interface request to play a second content item on the first device;

determining that the second content item is audio/video content; and

in response to determining that a second device in a vicinity of the first device is available to play video:

continuing to play the first content item on the first device; and

playing video content of the audio/video content of the second content item at the second device, without playing audio content of the audio/video content of the second content item.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining that the second device is available to play video further includes determining the capabilities of the second device.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein determining the capabilities of the second device includes determining a connection speed between the first device and the second device.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein determining the capabilities of the second device includes determining a display resolution of the second device.

5. The method of claim 1 , the method further including:

determining that at least one additional device is available in the vicinity of the first device; and

selecting, from the at least one additional device, the second device.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein selecting the second device includes determining the capabilities of the second device.

7. The method of claim 5 , wherein selecting the second device includes determining the proximity of the at least one additional device to the first device.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first content item includes audio/video content, and further wherein continuing to play the first content item on the first device includes continuing to play the audio content of the first content item whilst not playing back the video content of the first content item.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

in response to receiving a user interface request to swap playing of the first content item to the second device and playing of the second content item to the first device, playing the first content item on the second device and playing the second content item on the first device.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

in response to determining that the first content item and the second content item both include audio content, assigning priority to the audio content of one of the first content item or the second content item; and

pausing the one of the first content item or second content item that is not assigned priority.

11. A system comprising:

control circuitry configured to:

determine that a first content item is playing on a first device;

comprising input/output circuitry configured to:

receive a user interface request to play a second content item on the first device;

wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

determine that the second content item is audio/video content; and

in response to determining that a second device in a vicinity of the first device is available to play video:

continue to play the first content item on the first device; and

play video content of the audio/video content of the second content item at the second device, without playing audio content of the audio/video content of the second content item.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is configured to determine that the second device is available to play video is by determining the capabilities of the second device.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to determine the capabilities of the second device by determining a connection speed between the first device and the second device.

14. The system of claim 12 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to determine the capabilities of the second device by determining a display resolution of the second device.

15. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

determine that at least one additional device is available in the vicinity of the first device; and

select, from the at least one additional device, the second device.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to select the second device by determining the capabilities of the second device.

17. The system of claim 15 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to select the second device by determining the proximity of the at least one additional device to the first device.

18. The system of claim 11 , wherein the first content item includes audio/video content, and wherein the control circuitry configured to play the first content item on the first device is further configured to continue to play the audio content of the first content item whilst not playing back the video content of the first content item.

19. The system of claim 1 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

in response to receiving a user interface request to swap playing of the first content item to the second device and playing of the second content item to the first device, play the first content item on the second device and play the second content item on the first device.

20. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

in response to determining that the first content item and the second content item both include audio content, assign priority to the audio content of one of the first content item or the second content item; and

pause the one of the first content item or second content item that is not assigned priority.
