Abstract

An infant transport system is provided, comprising: an infant car seat; and a chassis coupled to the infant car seat. The chassis comprises a frame; a pair of rear legs pivotally coupled to the frame; and a pair of front legs, where each front leg is pivotally coupled to a respective rear leg, and wherein the rear legs and the front legs are retracted and proximate the frame in a first transport condition, and wherein the rear legs and the front legs are deployable away from the frame to a second transport condition. In the first transport condition, the rear legs are releasably secured to the infant car seat and the front legs are releasably secured to the chassis.

Claims (38)

1 . An infant transport system, comprising:

an infant car seat; and

a chassis coupled to the infant car seat, comprising:

a frame;

a pair of rear legs pivotally coupled to the frame each rear leg having a first end and a second end opposite the first end; and

a pair of front legs, each front leg having a first end and a second end, the first end of one of the front legs being directly pivotally coupled to a respective rear leg at a point between the first end and the second end of the rear leg, wherein the rear legs and the front legs are retracted to the frame in a first transport condition, and wherein the rear legs and the front legs are deployable away from the frame to a second transport condition;

wherein, in the first transport condition, the rear legs are releasably secured to the infant car seat and the front legs are releasably secured to the chassis.

The system of claim 1 , further comprising a first hook pivotally coupled within the infant car seat, and a rod extending from the second end of each of the rear legs, wherein the first hook is positioned to engage the rod in the first transport condition to secure the rear legs in the first transport condition.

3 . The system of claim 2 , further comprising:

a second hook pivotally coupled to the frame of the chassis;

an arm pivotally coupled within the infant car seat and positioned to selectively engage the second hook; and

a cross-brace extending inwardly from each front leg, the second hook positioned to engage the cross-brace in the first transport condition to secure the front legs in the first transport condition.

The system of claim 3 , further comprising a release handle on the infant car seat operably coupled to the first hook, wherein the release handle is operable to disengage the first hook from the rod to allow the rear legs to deploy from the first transport condition to the second transport condition.

The system of claim 4 , wherein the release handle is operably coupled to the arm, wherein the release handle is operable to move the arm, which moves the second hook to disengage the second hook from the cross-member to allow the front legs to deploy from the first transport condition to the second transport condition.

6 . The system of claim 5 , wherein each of the front legs includes a front wheel at a terminal end thereof, and each of the rear legs includes a rear wheel at a terminal end thereof, and wherein the system is operable as a stroller in the second transport condition.

7 . The system of claim 6 , wherein each front leg includes a hub with an internal spring channel, the system further comprising a spring held within the spring channel, the spring biasing the front legs away from the rear legs.

8 . The system of claim 7 , wherein the release handle is coupled to the first hook via a cable.

9 . The system of claim 8 , wherein the release handle is coupled to the arm via a cable.

10 . The system of claim 9 , wherein the infant car seat has a head end and a toe end opposite the head end, and wherein the release handle is positioned at the head end and the first hook is positioned near the toe end.

11 . An infant car seat and stroller assembly, comprising:

an infant car seat; and

a chassis having a frame configured to be coupled to the infant car seat;

a pair of rear legs pivotally coupled to the chassis each rear leg having a first end and a second end opposite the first end; and

a pair of front legs, each front leg having a first end and a second end, the first end of one of the front legs being directly pivotally coupled to a respective rear leg at a point between the first end and the second end of the rear leg;

wherein the rear legs and the front legs are retracted to the frame in a first transport condition usable as a car seat, and wherein the rear legs and the front legs are deployable away from the frame to a second transport condition usable as a stroller;

wherein, in the first transport condition, the rear legs are releasably secured to the infant car seat and the front legs are releasably secured to the frame of the chassis.

The assembly of claim 11 , wherein the infant car seat includes a pair of hooks pivotally coupled within the infant car seat, and wherein each rear leg includes an inwardly extending rod that, in the first transport condition, is positioned to engage a respective one of the pair of hooks to secure the rear legs in the first transport condition.

13 . The assembly of claim 12 , further comprising:

a pair of second hooks pivotally coupled within the frame of the chassis;

a pair of arms pivotally coupled within the infant car seat, each of the pair of arms being positioned to selectively engage a respective one of the second hooks; and

a cross-brace extending inwardly from each front leg, a respective one of the pair of second hooks positioned to engage the cross-brace in the first transport condition to secure the front legs in the first transport condition.

The assembly of claim 13 , further comprising a release handle on the infant car seat operably coupled to the pair of first hooks, wherein the release handle is operable to disengage the pair of first hooks from the rod to allow the rear legs to deploy from the first transport condition to the second transport condition.

The assembly of claim 14 , wherein the release handle is operably coupled to the pair of arms, wherein the release handle is operable to move the arms, which moves the pair of second hooks to disengage the second hooks from the cross-member to allow the front legs to deploy from the first transport condition to the second transport condition.

The assembly of claim 15 , wherein each of the front legs includes a front wheel at a terminal end thereof, and each of the rear legs includes a removable rear wheel at a terminal end thereof, and wherein the frame of the chassis includes a pair of recesses, the rear wheels being storable within the recesses when removed from the rear legs.

The assembly of claim 16 , wherein each front leg includes a hub with an internal spring channel, the assembly further comprising a spring held within the spring channel, the spring biasing the front legs away from the rear legs to assist in moving from the first transport condition to the second transport condition.

18 . The assembly of claim 17 , wherein the release handle is coupled to the first hook via a cable.

19 . The assembly of claim 18 , wherein the release handle is coupled to the arm via a cable.

20 . The assembly of claim 19 , wherein the infant car seat has a head end and a toe end opposite the head end, and wherein the release handle is positioned at the head end and the first hook is positioned nearer the toe end than the head end.
