Abstract

A first storage system compresses data relating to read and write by a primary site and stores the data in a first physical volume. A second storage system compresses data relating to read and write by a secondary site and stores the data in a second physical volume. When performing replication for transferring the data stored in the first physical volume of the first storage system to the second storage system and storing the data in the second physical volume, the first storage system and the second storage system determine, based on a compression scheme executable by the first storage system and a compression scheme executable by the second storage system, a compression scheme to be applied to transfer target data and transfer the transfer target data compressed by the determined compression scheme.

Claims (30)

1. A storage system comprising:

a processor connected to a second storage system in a manner enabling communication between the storage system and the second storage system, wherein

the storage system compresses data relating to read and write and stores the data in a first physical volume of the storage system, and

when, based on a predetermined replication setting, transferring the data stored in the first physical volume of the storage system to the second storage system, the storage system:

determines a determined compression scheme to be applied to transfer target data,

reads compressed transfer target data from the first physical volume, performs decompression processing to create decompressed data, and compresses the decompressed data according to the determined compression scheme, and

transfers the transfer target data compressed by the determined compression scheme, and

a processing for the predetermined replication setting is performed at a construction time of the data replication system.

2. The storage system according to claim 1 , wherein

the storage system determines the determined compression scheme of the transfer target data based on a first compression scheme executable by the storage system and a second compression scheme executable by the second storage system.

3. The storage system according to claim 2 , wherein,

when it is possible to perform the first compression scheme in the second storage system, the first compression scheme is determined as a compression scheme to compress the data to be transferred and the data is transferred from the storage system to the second storage system without performing the decompression and the compression; and

when it is not possible to perform the first compression scheme of the data stored in the storage system in the second storage system, the decompression and the compression are performed by the storage system.

4. The storage system according to claim 1 , wherein

the second storage system receives the compressed data and stores the compressed data in a secondary physical volume possessed by the second storage system and when instructed, read the data from a secondary physical volume in the second storage system and performs decompression processing.

5. The storage system according to claim 1 , wherein

the storage system separately includes the processor configured to process read and write and a processing unit configured to process compression and decompression, and

the second storage system is a software type storage system configured by a plurality of servers.

6. The storage system according to claim 1 , wherein

the storage system and the second storage system configure a replication to transfer the data stored in the first physical volume to the second storage system and store the data in a second physical volume possessed by the second storage system; and

the determined compression scheme to compress the data to be transferred is determined when setting the replication.

7. A method comprising:

compressing, via a storage system including a processor and connected to an other storage system in a manner enabling communication between the storage system and the second storage system, data relating to read and write and storing the data in a first physical volume of the storage system,

based on a predetermined replication setting, transferring the data stored in the first physical volume to the second storage system, and during the transferring, the storage system:

determines a compression scheme to be applied to transfer target data,

reads compressed transfer target data from the first physical volume,

performs decompression processing to create decompressed data,

compresses the decompressed data according to the compression scheme of the transfer target data, and

transfers the transfer target data compressed by the compression scheme, and

wherein a processing for the predetermined replication setting is performed at a construction time of the data replication system.
