Abstract

A multi-axis acceleration sensor comprises a frame, a central mass disposed within the frame, and a plurality of transducers mechanically coupled between the frame and the central mass. At least a first set of the transducers are arranged between the frame and the central mass in a manner configured to measure translational and rotational motion with respect to a first predefined axis.

Claims (24)

1. An ocean bottom seismic node, comprising:

a modular housing;

a multi-axis, single-mass acceleration sensor disposed within the modular housing and configured to measure translational motion and rotational motion of the ocean bottom seismic node, the multi-axis, single-mass acceleration sensor including

a frame;

a central mass suspended within the frame; and

a memory disposed within the modular housing and operatively connected to the multi-axis, single-mass acceleration to record seismic data.

2. The ocean bottom seismic node of claim 1 , wherein the multi-axis, single-mass acceleration sensor is configured to measure the translational and rotation motion of the ocean bottom seismic node with respect to three axes.

3. The ocean bottom seismic node of claim 1 , further comprising one or more of a hydrophone, a geophone, or an accelerometer.

4. The ocean bottom seismic node of claim 1 , further comprising a timing device configured to generate a timing signal for recording seismic data.

5. The ocean bottom seismic node of claim 1 , further comprising an energy source configured to provide power to the multi-axis, single-mass acceleration sensor and the memory.

6. An ocean bottom seismic survey apparatus, comprising:

a cable; and

two or more nodes connected to the cable, each node including

a modular housing,

a memory disposed within the modular housing, and

a multi-axis, single-mass acceleration sensor disposed within the modular housing and operatively connected to the memory.

7. The ocean bottom seismic survey apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the cable is configured to transmit power and/or signals between the two or more nodes.

8. The ocean bottom seismic survey apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the cable has a passive configuration in which signals and power are not transmitted through the cable and an active configuration in which signals and/or power are transmitted through the cable.

9. The ocean bottom seismic survey apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the signals include one or more of clock signals, data signals, or control signals.

10. The ocean bottom seismic survey apparatus of claim 7 , further comprising a hub coupled to the cable and configured to float or be suspended in the water column above the sea floor, wherein the cable is configured to transmit power and/or signals between the hub and the two or more nodes.

11. The ocean bottom seismic survey apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the hub includes a master clock, wherein each of the two or more nodes includes a timing device, and wherein the cable transmits a master clock signal from the master clock to the timing devices of the two or more nodes.

12. The ocean bottom seismic survey apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the hub includes an energy source, and wherein the cable transmits power from the energy source to the two or more nodes.

13. The ocean bottom seismic survey apparatus of claim 12 , wherein each of the two or more nodes include a battery, and wherein the cable transmits power from the energy source to the batteries of the two or more nodes.

14. The ocean bottom seismic survey of claim 10 , further comprising a head termination device disposed in the hub and a tail termination device disposed at an end of the cable opposite the hub, wherein the head and tail termination devices are coupled by sea water.
