Abstract

A biometric capture device is operative to adjust one or more environmental parameters to enhance a range (e.g., distance) at which a biometric may be captured from a subject. For example, a sample biometric capture device may be, include, or otherwise incorporate a retinal or iris scanner configured to capture an image of the retina or iris (e.g., a biometric) when the retina or iris is illuminated by infrared light. Generally, the amount of infrared light required to accurately image the retina or iris increases with the distance of the subject's retina or iris from the image capture device. The biometric capture device may capture a facial image using a first image sensor, identify a face in the facial image, capture an iris image using a second image sensor guided by the facial image, and identify a person using the iris image.

Claims (51)

1. A system, comprising:

a non-transitory medium that stores instructions; and

a processor operative to execute the instructions to:

capture an image of a person;

detect a distance to the person;

determine whether the image includes a face;

estimate a future time when an iris image or a retina image of the person can be captured at a future position if an environmental parameter is adjusted, the environmental parameter comprising at least one of light, an intensity of the light, a focus of the light, an amount of the light, or a frequency of the light;

adjust the environmental parameter at the future time; and

use the face to guide capture of the iris image or the retina image at the future time.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor captures the image of the person by instructing at least one image sensor to capture the image of the person.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor instructs the at least one image sensor to capture the iris image or the retina image.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor:

captures the image of the person by instructing a first image sensor to capture the image of the person; and

instructs a second image sensor to capture the irisin image or the retina image.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor uses a detector to detect the distance to the person.

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the processor uses the detector to estimate the future time when the iris image or the retina image of the person can be captured if the environmental parameter is adjusted.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor uses the distance to estimate the future time when the iris image or the retina image of the person can be captured if the environmental parameter is adjusted.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein:

the future time is a first future time;

the future position is a first future position; and

the processor estimates a subsequent future position of the person at a second future time.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the processor uses a detector to:

detect the distance to the person; and

estimate the subsequent future position of the person at the second future time.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein:

the distance is a first distance;

the processor uses the detector to detect a second distance to the person; and

the processor uses the second distance to estimate the subsequent future position of the person at the second future time.

11. The system of claim 8 , wherein:

the iris image or the retina image of the person is a first iris image or a first retina image of the person;

the processor adjusts the environmental parameter a first amount at the first future time;

the processor determines that a second iris image or a second retina image of the person can be captured at the second future time if the environmental parameter is adjusted a second amount;

the processor adjusts the environmental parameter the second amount at the second future time; and

the processor captures the second iris image or the second retina image of the person at the second future time.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the processor:

uses an visible light emitter to adjust visible light during the capture of the image; and

uses an infrared emitter to adjust infrared light during the capture of the iris image or the retina image.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein the visible light emitter is a white light emitter.

14. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor uses a visible light emitter to adjust visible light during the capture of the image.

15. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor uses an infrared emitter to adjust infrared light during the capture of the iris image or the retina image.

16. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor instructs an emitter to adjust the environmental parameter.

17. A method, comprising:

capturing an image of a person;

detecting a distance to the person;

determining whether the image includes a face;

estimating a future time when an iris image or a retina image of the person can be captured at a future position if an environmental parameter is adjusted, the environmental parameter comprising at least one of light, an intensity of the light, a focus of the light, an amount of the light, or a frequency of the light;

adjusting the environmental parameter at the future time; and

using the face to guide capture of the iris image or the retina image at the future time.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein at least one of the capturing the image of the person or capturing the iris image or the retina image includes instructing at least one image sensor.

19. The method of claim 17 , wherein the adjusting the environmental parameter includes instructing an emitter.

20. The method of claim 17 , wherein the determining the distance to the person includes receiving data from a detector.
