Abstract

A first appliance receives from a second controllable appliance a command for causing the first controllable appliance to be placed into a state and, in response, determines a trust level of the second controllable appliance. When it is determined that the second controllable appliance is trustworthy, the first controllable appliance executes the command. When it is determined that the second controllable appliance is untrustworthy, the first controllable appliance ignores the command. Otherwise, the first controllable appliance enters into a state in which the first controllable appliance waits for at least a predetermined period of time for a user to confirm whether or not the first controllable appliance should be caused to execute the command.

Claims (18)

1. A method, performed by a first appliance adapted for use in a home network that includes a second appliance, comprising:

receiving a command communication from the second appliance via the home network, the command communication indicating a command to be executed by the first appliance to place the first appliance into a second operating state that is different than a first operating state of the first appliance and an identity of the second appliance;

using both the identity of the second appliance and the first operating state of the first appliance to retrieve a one of a plurality of trust status values assigned to the second appliance; and

limiting execution of the command received from the second appliance to only when the retrieved one of the plurality of trust status values assigned to the second appliance is indicative of the second appliance being trustworthy.

2. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the first operating state of the first appliance comprises a powered condition operating state of the first appliance.

3. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the first operating state of the first appliance comprises an input receiving operating state of the first appliance.

4. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the first operating state of the first appliance comprises an output transmission operating state of the first appliance.

The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the plurality of trust status values assigned to the second appliance are stored in the memory in a plurality of trustworthiness tables and wherein each one of the plurality of trustworthiness tables corresponds to a one of a plurality of unique operating states of the first appliance.

6. The method as recited in claim 1 , further comprising causing the one of the plurality of trust status values assigned to the second appliance to be retrieved from a device located remotely from the first appliance.

7. The method as recited in claim 6 , wherein the device located remotely from the first appliance comprises an Internet server device having an associated data repository in which the plurality of trust status values assigned to the second appliance is stored.

The method as recited in claim 1 , further comprising causing an operating state of a third appliance, communicatively coupled to the first appliance via the home network at a time corresponding to when the command communication is received from the second appliance, to also be used when retrieving the one of a plurality of trust status values assigned to the second appliance.

9. The method as recited in claim 8 , wherein the operating state of the third appliance comprises a powered condition operating state of the third appliance.

10. The method as recited in claim 8 , wherein the operating state of the third appliance comprises an input receiving operating state of the third appliance.

11. The method as recited in claim 8 , wherein the operating state of the third appliance comprises an output transmission operating state of the third appliance.

12. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the first appliance comprises an audio-video receiver.

13. The method as recited in claim 12 , wherein the second appliance comprises an audio and/or video source device coupled to the audio-video receiver.

14. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the first appliance comprises a television receiver.

15. The method as recited in claim 14 , wherein the second controllable appliance comprises an audio and/or video source device coupled to the television receiver.
