Abstract

A method for adjusting the operation of a surgical instrument using machine learning in a surgical suite is disclosed. The method comprises the steps of gathering data during surgical procedures, wherein the surgical procedures include the use of a surgical instrument, analyzing the gathered data to determine an appropriate operational adjustment of the surgical instrument, and adjusting the operation of the surgical instrument to improve the operation of the surgical instrument.

Claims (26)

1. A method for adjusting the operation of a surgical dissecting instrument in a surgical suite, wherein said method comprises:

analyzing data gathered during surgical procedures, wherein the surgical procedures include use of a surgical dissecting instrument, to determine an operational adjustment of the surgical dissecting instrument; and

adjusting an operation of the surgical dissecting instrument based on the determined operational adjustment, wherein adjusting the operation of the surgical dissecting instrument comprises adjusting a parameter of an opening stroke of the surgical dissecting instrument.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method further comprises storing the data in a surgical hub.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein adjusting the operation of the surgical dissecting instrument comprises adjusting an applied current of electrical energy.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein adjusting the operation of the surgical dissecting instrument comprises adjusting a length of the opening stroke.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein adjusting the operation of the surgical dissecting instrument comprises adjusting a speed of the opening stroke.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the data is gathered by monitoring each opening stroke during use of the surgical dissecting instrument using a jaw detection circuit.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein adjusting the operation of the surgical dissecting instrument comprises adjusting an applied voltage of electrical energy.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the data is gathered by accessing existing information based on previous operations.

9. A method for adjusting control parameters of a surgical dissecting instrument using a surgical hub, wherein said method comprises:

evaluating data gathered during surgical procedures, wherein the surgical procedures include the use of a surgical dissecting instrument, to determine an operation of the surgical dissecting instrument; and

adjusting the operation of the surgical dissecting instrument based on the determined operation of the surgical dissecting instrument, wherein adjusting the operation of the surgical dissecting instrument comprises adjusting a parameter of an opening stroke of the surgical dissecting instrument.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the method further comprises storing the data in a surgical hub system.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the adjustment comprises adjusting an applied current of electrical energy.

12. The method of claim 9 , wherein the adjustment comprises changing a length of the opening stroke.

13. The method of claim 9 , wherein the adjustment comprises adjusting a speed of the opening stroke.

14. The method of claim 9 , wherein the method further comprises monitoring each opening stroke during the use of the surgical dissecting instrument using a jaw detection circuit.

15. The method of claim 9 , wherein the adjustment comprises adjusting an applied voltage of electrical energy.

16. The method of claim 9 , wherein the method further comprises accessing existing information based on previous operations.

17. The method of claim 9 , wherein the adjustment of the surgical dissecting instrument is further based on forces experienced during the opening stroke.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the adjustment comprises stopping the opening stroke when the forces exceed a force threshold.

19. A method for adjusting control parameters of a surgical dissecting system using a surgical hub, wherein the surgical dissecting system comprises a jaw detection circuit and an electrical power circuit, wherein the method for adjusting control parameters of the surgical dissecting system comprises:

evaluating data originating from the jaw detection circuit, the electrical power circuit, and the surgical hub; and

adjusting an operation of the surgical dissecting system based on the evaluated data, wherein adjusting the operation of the surgical dissecting system comprises adjusting a parameter of an opening stroke of the surgical dissecting instrument.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein the surgical dissecting system is attached to a surgical robot.
