Abstract

An attendant-free midway-style electronic game machine. The game machine may be configured to detect when a projectile has been actuated towards the target. An electronic controller in electronic communication with said detector, may be configured to automatically end a game play session once a predetermined number of said game projectiles have been detected as having been actuated by a user toward said target. And, a virtual attendant display is provided, in electronic communication with a game controller, to greet and instruct and interact with players in playing the game.

Claims (37)

1 . A virtual attendant device for an electronic game machine that is configured to enable a gameplay session, the gameplay session having a start and an end, the virtual attendant device comprising:

a housing;

a speaker and a display screen integrated into the housing;

a database of media files in communication with said display screen and said speaker;

a control unit operatively connected to the database, the speaker, the display, and the electronic game machine, wherein the control unit is configured to:

retrieve information from the electronic game machine about a progress of a gameplay session relative to the start thereof towards its end;

retrieve an appropriate media file from the database based on the progress of the gameplay session; and

play the media file either through or on at least one of the speaker and the display screen.

2 . The virtual attendant device of claim 1 further comprising a motion sensor that is configured to detect when a player has approached the game machine.

3 . The virtual attendant device of claim 2 , wherein:

the database of media files comprises a media file of an invitation to play the game machine;

wherein the control unit is configured to play the media file of the invitation when the motion sensor detects a player.

4 . The virtual attendant device of claim 1 further comprising a payment-received sensor that is configured to detect when payment has been received to play the game.

5 . The virtual attendant device of claim 4 , wherein:

the database of media files comprises a media file of gameplay rules and instructions;

wherein the control unit is configured to play the media file of gameplay rules and instructions when the payment-received sensor detects that payment has been received.

6 . The virtual attendant device of claim 1 further comprising an end-of-game sensor that is configured to detect when a gameplay session has ended.

7 . The virtual attendant device of claim 6 , wherein:

the database of media files comprises a media file related to at least one of:

an invitation to play the game machine again;

rewards earned following the gameplay session;

final game score;

the control unit is configured to play the media file when the end-of-game sensor detects that a gameplay session has ended.

8 . The virtual attendant device of claim 1 , wherein:

the electronic game machine comprises a payment device and a control unit;

at least one of the payment device and the control unit of the electronic game machine is configured to transmit information about payment received to the control unit of the virtual attendant device; and

the control unit of the virtual attendant device is configured to retrieve an appropriate media file from the database based on the information received and play that media file either through or on at least one of the speaker and the display screen.

9 . The virtual attendant device of claim 1 , wherein:

the electronic game machine comprises a control unit;

the control unit of the electronic game machine is configured to transmit information about the end of a gameplay session to the control unit of the virtual attendant device; and

the control unit of the virtual attendant device is configured to retrieve an appropriate media file from the database based on the information received and play that media file either through or on at least one of the speaker and the display screen.

10 . The virtual attendant device of claim 1 , wherein:

the electronic game machine comprises a sensor array for detecting the number of gameplay attempts made by a player of the electronic game machine;

the electronic game machine further comprises a control unit operatively connected to the sensor array that is configured to determine when an unauthorized gameplay attempt has been made;

the control unit of the electronic game machine is further configured to transmit information about any unauthorized gameplay attempts to the control unit of the virtual attendant device;

the database of media files comprises a media file of a warning to the player; and

the control unit of the virtual attendant device is configured to play the media file of the warning either through or on at least one of the speaker and the display screen.
