Abstract

An improved financial terminal automatically reconfigures into different financial processing terminal types. In one embodiment, the terminal comprises a housing; a card reader configured to accept at least a portion of a card having an integrated circuit; at least one display; at least one processor; and at least one memory configured to store machine readable code, the machine readable code comprising a first kernel corresponding to a first transaction type and a second kernel corresponding to a second transaction type.

Claims (28)

1. A computer program product for configuring a financial processing terminal comprising:

a first computer readable program code stored in a memory associated with said financial processing terminal, said first computer readable program code enabling, when executed by a processor of said financial terminal, either a first configuration in which said financial terminal processes one or more financial transactions solely based upon a first transaction type or a second configuration in which said financial terminal processes one or more financial transactions solely based upon a second transaction type;

a second computer readable program code stored in said memory associated with said financial processing terminal and configured to cause said processor of said financial processing terminal to:

identify information read from a card by a card reader of said financial processing terminal, said card linked to a financial account;

determine available financial transactions based on said information read from said card and based on said first transaction type and said second transaction type;

utilize said first computer readable program code to cause said financial terminal to have said first configuration;

process a first financial transaction of said available financial transactions solely based upon said first transaction type;

when said first financial transaction is denied, automatically reconfigure said financial terminal by utilizing said first computer readable program to cause said financial terminal to have said second configuration; and

process a second financial transaction of said available financial transactions solely based upon said second transaction type.

2. The computer program product in accordance with claim 1 wherein said financial processing terminal comprises at least one of a kiosk, an ATM and a POS terminal.

3. The computer program product in accordance with claim 1 wherein said second computer readable program code is configured to determine said available financial transactions from information read from an integrated circuit of said card.

4. The computer program product of claim 3 wherein said second computer readable program code is configured to cause said processor to control said card reader to accept at least a portion of said card into said card reader, engage said integrated circuit of said card with said reader, and not disengage said card when said first financial transaction is denied.

5. The computer program product of claim 4 wherein said second computer readable program code is configured to cause said processor to cause said card reader to automatically re-read said card after said first financial transaction is denied.

6. The computer program product of claim 1 wherein said second computer readable program code is further configured to cause said processor to transmit information to and receive information from at least one financial processing network via at least one communication interface of said financial processing terminal.

7. The computer program product of claim 6 wherein said second computer readable program code is configured to cause said processor to send, via said communication interface, a request to process said first financial transaction as a transaction of said first transaction type.

8. The computer program product of claim 6 wherein said second computer readable program code is further configured to cause said processor to send, via said communication interface, a request to process said second financial transaction as a transaction of said second transaction type.

9. The computer program product of claim 1 wherein said second computer readable program code is configured to cause said processor to cause a monetary dispensing device of said financial processing terminal to dispense funds.

10. The computer program product of claim 1 wherein said first transaction type is a Personal Identification Number (“PIN”) based transaction type.

11. The computer program product of claim 10 wherein said second transaction type is a Signature based transaction type.

12. The computer program product of claim 1 wherein second computer readable program code is configured to cause said processor to receive user input regarding said first financial transaction.

13. The computer program product in accordance with claim 12 wherein said user input comprises a first selection of said first financial transaction from said available financial transactions solely based on said first transaction type.

14. The computer program product in accordance with claim 1 wherein said information read from said card comprises one or more application identifiers which are utilized to determine said available financial transactions.

15. The computer program product in accordance with claim 13 comprising receiving input from said user of a second selection of said second financial transaction from said available financial transactions solely based on said second transaction type.

16. The computer program product of claim 1 wherein said second computer readable program code is configured to cause said processor to configure said financial terminal into said first mode of operation without requiring receipt of user input of a selected financial transaction.

17. The computer program product in accordance with claim 1 wherein said available financial transactions are determined by reading application identifiers from said card.

18. The computer program product in accordance with claim 17 wherein when said available financial transactions includes at least one financial transaction of a global transaction type, said second computer readable program code is configured to cause said processor to select said at least one financial transaction of a global transaction type as said first transaction type.

19. The computer program product in accordance with claim 1 wherein said first computer readable program code are stored in a secure location of said memory apart from said second computer readable program code.

20. The computer program product of claim 1 wherein said second computer readable program code is configured to cause said processor to cause at least one display of said financial processing terminal to display information regarding a denial of said first financial transaction when said first financial transaction is denied.
