Abstract

A superabrasive element includes a substrate and a superabrasive table bonded to the substrate, the superabrasive table including a polished surface having a polished finish, the polished surface extending over at least a central, apical region of the superabrasive table, and an unpolished surface including an unpolished finish, the unpolished surface surrounding a majority of the polished surface. A method of manufacturing a superabrasive element includes providing a superabrasive element having a substrate and a superabrasive table bonded to the substrate and polishing at least a central, apical region of the superabrasive table to form a polished surface, without polishing an unpolished surface of the superabrasive table, the unpolished surface surrounding a majority of the polished surface.

Claims (34)

1. A method of manufacturing a superabrasive element, the method comprising:

providing a superabrasive element comprising:

a substrate; and

a superabrasive table bonded to the substrate; and

polishing at least a central, apical region of the superabrasive table to form a polished surface, without polishing an unpolished surface of the superabrasive table, the unpolished surface surrounding a majority of the polished surface.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising defining at least a portion of the polished surface of the superabrasive table to be substantially arcuate.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising one of:

defining at least a portion of the unpolished surface of the superabrasive table to be substantially conical;

defining at least a portion of the unpolished surface of the superabrasive table to be non-planar; or

defining at least a portion of the unpolished surface of the superabrasive table to be substantially arcuate and convex.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising defining the unpolished surface to extend from the polished surface to the substrate.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising defining the unpolished surface to exhibit a substantially conical shape extending radially outward from polished surface.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising polishing the at least a central, apical region of the superabrasive table such that the unpolished surface surrounds an entirety of the polished surface.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein polishing at least the central, apical region comprises grinding, lapping, chemical polishing, laser polishing, ion beam polishing, or combinations thereof.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein polishing at least the central, apical region comprises grinding or lapping without coolant.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising leaching at least the central, apical region of the superabrasive table.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein providing the superabrasive element comprises providing the superabrasive table with a domed, central, apical region.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein providing the superabrasive element comprises providing the superabrasive table with a conical surface surrounding the domed, central, apical region.

12. A method of manufacturing a superabrasive element, the method comprising:

securing a superabrasive table to a substrate of a superabrasive element;

polishing at least a central, apical region of the superabrasive table of the superabrasive element to form a polished surface; and

while polishing the at least a central, apical region of the superabrasive table, maintaining an unpolished surface of the superabrasive table, the unpolished surface surrounding a majority of the polished surface.

13. The method of claim 12 , further comprising defining the unpolished surface to extend from the polished surface to the substrate.

14. The method of claim 12 , further comprising polishing defining the unpolished surface to exhibit a substantially conical shape extending radially outward from the polished surface.

15. The method of claim 12 , further comprising defining the unpolished surface to bound the polished surface.

16. A superabrasive element formed by the method according to claim 12 .

17. A method of manufacturing a superabrasive element, the method comprising:

processing at least a central region of a superabrasive table of a superabrasive element to form a first surface having an at least partially polished finish; and

while processing the at least a central region of the superabrasive table, maintaining a second surface of the superabrasive table to have a greater surface roughness than the first surface, the second surface surrounding a majority of the first surface.

18. The method of claim 17 , further comprising securing the superabrasive table to a substrate of the superabrasive element.

19. The method of claim 17 , further comprising defining the second surface to exhibit a substantially conical shape extending radially outward from the first surface.

20. A cutting tool comprising:

a tool body; and

at least one superabrasive element affixed to the tool body, the at least one superabrasive element being formed by the method according to claim 17 .
