Abstract

A method and system may provide a new prescription order interface which allows a customer to order one or more new prescription medications in a quick and easy manner from a remote location using a computer or mobile device. The customer provides a new paper prescription image that includes the prescription data for a pharmacy to fill the new prescription order. The new paper prescription image is received by a server and a default pickup store and a default pickup time are determined. The server also determines whether there is a high risk that the new prescription order is fraudulent by comparing a signature in the new paper prescription image to stored signatures associated with the prescriber, and comparing distances between the locations of the customer's web-enabled device, the pharmacy, and the prescriber. The system may be accessed through a series of web pages and/or via an application.

Claims (58)

1. A method of detecting fraud when filling a new prescription order for one or more prescription medications, the method executed by one or more computer processors programmed to perform the method, the method comprising:

receiving, at the one or more processors, from a web-enabled device of a customer, over a network, an image of a new paper prescription for the customer;

determining, by the one or more processors, a pharmacy at which to fill a new prescription order corresponding to the new paper prescription;

determining, by the one or more processors, prescription data based on the image of the new paper prescription, wherein the prescription data includes an identification of a prescriber who wrote or printed the new paper prescription;

determining, by the one or more processors, a location of the web-enabled device by receiving geolocation information generated by a geolocation device;

determining, by the one or more processors, a location of the pharmacy, and a location of the prescriber based on the image of the new paper prescription;

determining, by the one or more processors, a risk of prescription fraud based on one or more distances between the location of the web-enabled device, the location of the pharmacy, and the location of the prescriber;

determining, by the one or more processors, that the risk of prescription fraud does not exceed a threshold amount of risk; and

in response to determining that the risk of prescription fraud does not exceed the threshold amount of risk, causing the new prescription order to be filled.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the image of the new paper prescription is captured via an image capture screen, and wherein a confirmation to submit the new prescription order is received via an order review screen.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining a pharmacy at which to fill the new prescription order comprises retrieving from a database, for each customer identifier, a record storing a default pharmacy.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining a pharmacy at which to fill the new prescription order comprises:

determining one or more pharmacies within a predetermined distance from a location indicated by the geolocation information; and

receiving a selection by the customer of one of the one or more pharmacies.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein prescription data includes at least one of a practice name, a prescriber name, a prescriber signature, a prescriber phone number, a prescriber address, a DEA number, a dosage, a day supply, a number of refills prescribed, or a prescription date.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the risk of prescription fraud does not exceed the threshold amount of risk in a first instance, and in a second instance when the risk of prescription fraud exceeds the threshold amount risk:

transmitting, from the one or more processors and via the network, at least one of an alert to a pharmacist in the pharmacy, an alert to a loss/prevention and compliance officer, or a rejection of the new prescription order.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising transmitting data corresponding to the pharmacy, a default pickup time and a default pickup date to be displayed on the web-enabled device.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

electronically transmitting, from the one or more processors and via the network, the new prescription order to the selected pharmacy; and

electronically notifying, by the one or more processors and via the network, the customer that the new prescription order is ready to be picked up.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

storing, for each of a plurality of prescribers, one or more prescriptions written or printed by a prescriber, wherein each prescription is for one or more prescription medications; and

determining, by the one or more processors, for the prescriber who wrote or printed the new paper prescription, a list of one or more prescriptions which the prescriber prescribes most frequently.

10. The method of claim 9 , further comprising:

determining, by the one or more processors, whether a prescription medication in the new paper prescription is the same as one of the one or more prescription medications in the list; and

when the prescription medication in the new paper prescription is the same as one of the one or more prescription medications in the list:

determining, by the one or more processors, prescription data based on a stored prescription for the one of the one or more prescription medications in the list.

11. A system for detecting fraud when filling a new prescription order for one or more prescription medications, the system comprising:

a communication network; and

one or more server computers communicatively coupled to the communication network, at least one of the server computers configured to:

receive from a web-enabled device communicatively coupled to the communication network, an image of a new paper prescription for a customer;

determine a pharmacy at which to fill a new prescription order corresponding to the new paper prescription;

determine prescription data based on the image of the new paper prescription, wherein the prescription data includes an identification of a prescriber who wrote or printed the new paper prescription;

determine a location of the web-enabled device by receiving geolocation information generated by a geolocation device;

determine a location of the pharmacy, and a location of the prescriber based on the image of the new paper prescription;

determine a risk of prescription fraud based on one or more distances between the location of the web-enabled device, the location of the pharmacy, and the location of the prescriber;

determine that the risk of prescription fraud does not exceed a threshold amount of risk; and

in response to determining that the risk of prescription fraud does not exceed the threshold amount of risk, cause the new prescription order to be filled.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the image of the new paper prescription is captured via an image capture screen, and wherein the server computer is further configured to receive a confirmation to submit the new prescription order via an order review screen.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein to determine a pharmacy at which to fill the new prescription order, the server computer is configured to retrieve from a database, for each customer identifier, a record storing a default pharmacy.

14. The system of claim 11 , wherein to determine a pharmacy at which to fill the new prescription order, the server computer is configured to:

determine one or more pharmacies within a predetermined distance from a location indicated by the geolocation information; and

receive from the web-enabled device, via the network, a selection by the customer of one of the one or more pharmacies.

15. The system of claim 11 , wherein prescription data includes at least one of a practice name, a prescriber name, a prescriber signature, a prescriber phone number, a prescriber address, a DEA number, a dosage, a day supply, a number of refills prescribed, or a prescription date.

16. The system of claim 11 , wherein the risk of prescription fraud does not exceed the threshold amount of risk in a first instance, and in a second instance when the risk of prescription fraud exceeds the threshold amount of risk, the server computer is configured to:

transmit via the network, at least one of an alert to a pharmacist in the pharmacy, an alert to a loss/prevention and compliance officer, or a rejection of the new prescription order.

17. The system of claim 11 , wherein the server computer is further configured to transmit data corresponding to the pharmacy, a default pickup time and a default pickup date to be displayed on the web-enabled device.

18. The system of claim 11 , wherein the server computer is further configured to:

electronically transmit, to the web-enabled device from the server computer, via the network, the new prescription order to the selected pharmacy; and

electronically notify, the customer from the server computer, via the network, that the new prescription order is ready to be picked up.

19. The system of claim 11 , wherein the server computer is further configured to:

store for each of a plurality of prescribers, one or more prescriptions written or printed by a prescriber, wherein each prescription is for one or more prescription medications; and

determine for the prescriber who wrote or printed the new paper prescription, a list of one or more prescriptions which the prescriber prescribes most frequently.

20. The system of claim 19 , wherein the server computer is further configured to:

determine whether a prescription medication in the new paper prescription is the same as one of the one or more prescription medications in the list; and

when the prescription medication in the new paper prescription is the same as one of the one or more prescription medications in the list:

determine prescription data based on a stored prescription for the one of the one or more prescription medications in the list.
