Abstract

Provided are compositions comprising an orally-acceptable carrier and a cationic copolymer derived from the polymerization of n-vinyl pyrrolidone (VP) with cationic monomers containing amines or by copolymerization of n-vinyl pyrrolidone (VP) monomers with cationic monomers comprising amides followed by deprotection to amines. Also provided are uses of such compounds in the oral cavity to inhibit demineralization of a tooth.

Claims (24)

1 . A composition comprising an orally-acceptable carrier and a cationic copolymer having repeat units derived from n-vinyl pyrrolidone (VP) and repeat units derived from monomers containing amines or guanidine.

2 . The composition of claim 1 wherein said copolymer is described by Formula I below:

wherein x and y are integers in a ratio of from 1:99 to about 99:1, the repeat units x and y are randomly distributed, and R 1 is a repeat unit containing an amine group.

3 . The composition of claim 2 wherein R 1 is derived from a monomer compound selected from the group consisting of n-vinyl phthalimide, 2-N-morpholinoethyl acrylate, methacryloylchloine methyl sulfate, 2-N-morpholinoethyl methacrylate, 2-diisopropylaminoethyl methacrylate, 2-aminoethyl methacrylate, Methacryloyl-L-lysine, N-[3-(N,N-dimethylamino)propyl] methacrylamide, N-(2-aminoethyl) methacrylamide, 2-(N,N-Dimethylamino)ethyl acrylate, 2-(N,N-Diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate, 2-(tert-Butylamino)ethyl methacrylate, 2-(N,N-Dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate, 2-Acryloxyethyltrimethylammonium, and the like.

4 . The composition of claim 3 wherein R 1 is derived from n-vinyl phthalimide.

5 . The composition of claim 2 wherein R 1 is a repeat unit derived from a cationic monomer comprising an amide followed by deprotection of the amide to an amine.

6 . The composition of claim 5 wherein said cationic monomer comprising an amide is selected from the group consisting of n-vinyl formamide, N-(3-aminopropyl)methacrylamide, N-(3-BOC-aminopropyl)methacrylamide, N-[2-(N,N-dimethylamino)ethyl]methacrylamide, N-[3-(N,N-Dimethylamino)propyl]acrylamide and the like.

7 . The composition of claim 7 wherein aid cationic monomer comprising an amide is n-vinyl formamide.

8 . The composition of claim 1 comprising from about 0.01 to about 5% of said cationic copolymer.

9 . The composition of claim 1 further comprising fluoride.

10 . The composition of claim 1 further comprising sodium tripolyphosphate.

11 . The composition of claim 1 wherein said composition is in a form selected form the group consisting of a mouthwash, mouth rinse, mouth spray, toothpaste, tooth gel, sub-gingival gel, mousse, foam, denture care product, dentifrice, lozenge, concentrate and chewable tablet.

12 . The composition of claim 11 wherein said composition is a mouthwash comprising water, and at least one surfactant selected from the group consisting of anionic, cationic, non-ionic, zwitterionic surfactants and combinations of two or more thereof.

13 . The composition of claim 11 further comprising at least one essential oil selected from the group consisting of menthol, thymol, eucalyptol, methyl salicylate, and combinations of two or more thereof.
