Abstract

Systems and methods for authorizing operations associated with blocked media assets using two-factor authentication. In some aspects, a media guidance application (e.g., executed by a set-top box or other user equipment used to store and display media assets) prompts a user for a password (e.g., a personal information number) in order to unlock the content for viewing. In response to receiving a second request from the user to perform an operation related to the media asset (e.g., delete), the media guidance application prompts the user for an additional factor confirming his or her identity, consistent with two-factor authentication protocol. If the user's identity is authenticated as a user that has authority to perform the operation related to the media asset (e.g., delete the stored media asset), the media guidance application performs the operation related to the media asset (e.g., deletes the media asset).

Claims (45)

1. A method comprising:

receiving a first input of first authentication information;

based on determining that the first authentication information is correct, granting access to an identifier of a media asset;

while the media asset is being played, based on receiving a user interface request to execute an operation, wherein the operation alters playing of the media asset, generating for display a user interface request for a second input of second authentication information;

receiving the second input of the second authentication information; and

based on determining that the second authentication information is correct, executing the operation associated with the media asset.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first authentication information is a personal identification number (PIN).

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the operation associated with the media asset comprises renting or buying the media asset.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second authentication information is a biometric signature.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the determining that the first authentication information is correct comprises determining that the first authentication information matches a stored first identifier.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining that the second authentication information is correct comprises determining that the second authentication information matches a stored second identifier.

7. A system comprising:

input circuitry configured to:

receive a first input of first authentication information;

processing circuitry configured to:

based on determining that the first authentication information is correct, grant access to an identifier of a media asset;

while the media asset is being played, based on receiving a user interface request to execute an operation, wherein the operation alters playing of the media asset, generate for display a user interface request for a second input of second authentication information;

wherein the input circuitry is further configured to:

receive the second input of the second authentication information; and

wherein the processing circuitry is further configured to:

based on determining that the second authentication information is correct, execute the operation associated with the media asset.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the first authentication information is a personal identification number (PIN).

9. The system of claim 7 , wherein the operation associated with the media asset comprises renting or buying the media asset.

10. The system of claim 7 , wherein the second authentication information is a biometric signature.

11. The system of claim 7 , wherein the processing circuitry is further configured to determine that the first authentication information is correct by:

determining that the first authentication information matches a stored first identifier.

12. The system of claim 7 , wherein the processing circuitry is further configured to determine that the second authentication information is correct by:

determining that the second authentication information matches a stored second identifier.

13. A non-transitory computer readable medium comprising:

instructions that when executed by input circuitry cause the input circuitry to:

receive a first input of first authentication information;

instructions that when executed by processing circuitry cause the processing circuitry to:

based on determining that the first authentication information is correct, grant access to an identifier of a media asset;

while the media asset is being played, based on receiving a user interface request to execute an operation, wherein the operation alters playing of the media asset, generate for display a user interface request for a second input of second authentication information;

instructions that when executed by the input circuitry further cause the input circuitry to:

receive the second input of the second authentication information; and

instructions that when executed by the processing circuitry further cause the processing circuitry to:

based on determining that the second authentication information is correct, execute the operation associated with the media asset.

14. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 13 , wherein the first authentication information is a personal identification number (PIN).

15. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 13 , wherein the operation associated with the media asset comprises renting or buying the media asset.

16. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 13 , wherein the second authentication information is a biometric signature.

17. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 13 , further comprising instructions that when executed by the processing circuitry cause the processing circuitry to determine that the first authentication information is correct by:

determining that the first authentication information matches a stored first identifier.

18. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 13 , further comprising instructions that when executed by the processing circuitry cause the processing circuitry to determine that the second authentication information is correct by:

determining that the second authentication information matches a stored second identifier.
