Abstract

A catheter assembly includes a catheter hub defining an interior cavity and a catheter tube extending distally thereof. A rigid actuator is positioned to extend proximally in the interior cavity and support a seal member positioned thereon in the interior cavity. The seal member includes a central membrane, a distal portion, and a proximal portion. An hourglass shaped actuator cavity is formed in the distal portion and receives a barbed end of the actuator. The outer surface of the seal member is in partial circumferential engagement with the catheter hub to define an air path that allows fluid communication between areas of the interior cavity distal and proximal of the seal member. The seal member may be configured for multi-use and include a biasing member that moves the seal member to force the membrane back over the actuator to close the membrane.

Claims (31)

1 . A catheter assembly comprising:

a catheter hub having an open proximal end and a distal end, with an inner surface extending therebetween defining a catheter hub interior cavity;

a catheter fixedly connected to and extending distally from the distal end of the catheter hub;

a seal member having a cylindrical body including an outer surface and a membrane extending perpendicularly relative to a central axis of the cylindrical body to separate a cavity defined by a distal portion and a cylindrical bore defined by a proximal portion of the cylindrical body, the cavity of the distal portion and the bore of the proximal portion defining a passageway openable through the membrane;

at least one groove axially extending along the outer surface of the cylindrical body along the distal portion and at least partially along the outer surface of the proximal portion to establish a fluid path between the open proximal end and the distal interior cavity portion of the catheter hub.

2 . The catheter assembly of claim 1 , further comprising:

an actuator extending proximally inside the catheter hub interior cavity from the catheter hub distal end to a free open end situated within the catheter hub interior cavity distal from the catheter hub open proximal end;

wherein the seal member is axially movable relative to the actuator in a distal direction to place the membrane in contact with the free open end of the stationary actuator such that the membrane is opened by the open end when pressure is applied to the proximal portion of the seal member in the distal direction.

3 . The catheter assembly of claim 2 , wherein the distal portion of the seal member acts as a biasing member configured to axially move the seal member in a proximal direction to remove the contact between the membrane and the free open end of the actuator and close the membrane when the pressure is removed from the proximal portion of the seal member.

4 . The catheter assembly of claim 1 , wherein the seal member is axially positioned in the catheter hub interior cavity such that there is a space P 1 inside the catheter hub interior cavity proximal the open proximal end of seal member and a space D 1 inside the catheter hub interior cavity distal the distal end of the seal member.

5 . The catheter assembly of claim 4 , wherein the seal member is in circumferential engagement with an interior wall engagement area of the catheter hub except in the area of the axial groove to facilitate fluid communication between the spaces P 1 and D 1 .

6 . The catheter assembly of claim 1 , further comprising an actuator extending proximally inside the catheter hub interior cavity from the catheter hub distal end to a free open end situated within the catheter hub interior cavity distal from the catheter hub open proximal end;

wherein the seal member is axially positioned in the catheter hub interior cavity and held in a stable position on the actuator; and

wherein air in the distal interior cavity portion is vented through the axial groove to the open proximal end to prevent excessive pressure build up during actuation of the seal member.

7 . The catheter assembly of claim 1 , wherein the catheter hub interior cavity includes a contacting region where the seal member makes contact with the inner surface of the catheter hub, the groove at the seal member extends through the contacting region to define a portion of the fluid path between the distal interior cavity and the open proximal end of the catheter hub.

8 . The catheter assembly of claim 1 , wherein the distal portion of the seal member has a distal end in abutment contact with the inner wall at the distal interior cavity of the catheter hub and acts to bias the proximal portion of the seal member in the proximal direction such that when pressure is applied to the proximal end of the proximal portion, the distal portion compresses to enable movement of the seal member in the distal direction; and

wherein when the pressure is removed, the distal portion biases the seal member to move to its natural position.

9 . The catheter assembly of claim 1 , wherein the at least one groove comprises two grooves each extending along the distal portion and at least a portion of the proximal portion of the seal member.

10 . The catheter assembly of claim 1 , wherein the at least one groove comprises two grooves on opposite sides of the outer surface each extending along the distal portion and at least a portion of the proximal portion of the seal member.

11 . A catheter assembly comprising:

a catheter hub having an open proximal end and a distal end, with an inner surface extending therebetween defining a catheter hub interior cavity;

a catheter fixedly connected to and extending distally from the distal end of the catheter hub;

an actuator extending proximally inside the catheter hub interior cavity from the catheter hub distal end to a free open end;

a seal member having a cylindrical body including an outer surface and a membrane extending perpendicularly relative to a central axis of the cylindrical body to separate a cavity defined by a distal portion and a cylindrical bore defined by a proximal portion of the cylindrical body, the cavity of the distal portion and the bore of the proximal portion defining a passageway openable through the membrane;

at least one groove axially extending along the outer surface of the cylindrical body along the distal portion and at least partially along the outer surface of the proximal portion to establish a fluid path between the open proximal end and the distal interior cavity portion of the catheter hub to vent air from the distal interior cavity portion to the open proximal end.

12 . The catheter assembly of claim 11 , wherein the seal member is axially movable relative to the actuator in a distal direction to place the membrane in contact with the free open end of the stationary actuator such that the membrane is opened by the open end when pressure is applied to the proximal portion of the seal member, the air in the distal interior cavity portion being vented through the axial groove to prevent excessive pressure build up in the distal interior cavity portion.

13 . The catheter assembly of claim 11 , wherein the seal member is axially positioned in the catheter hub interior cavity such that there is a space P 1 inside the catheter hub interior cavity proximal the open proximal end of seal member and a space D 1 inside the catheter hub interior cavity distal the distal end of the seal member.

14 . The catheter assembly of claim 11 , wherein the seal member is in circumferential engagement with an inner wall engagement area of the catheter hub except in the area of the axial groove to facilitate fluid communication between the spaces P 1 and D 1 .

15 . The catheter assembly of claim 11 , wherein the seal member is axially positioned in the catheter hub interior cavity and held in a stable position on the actuator; and

wherein air in the distal interior cavity portion is vented through the axial groove to the open proximal end to prevent excessive pressure build up during actuation of the seal member.

16 . The catheter assembly of claim 11 , wherein the seal member has two grooves at opposite sides of the seal member each extending along the distal portion and at least a portion of the proximal portion of the seal member.
