Abstract

An end effector for use to staple an anatomical structure of a patient during a surgical procedure includes an anvil and a cartridge. The anvil has an anvil face and a first staple pocket defined by the anvil face, where the first staple pocket comprises a first cup and a second cup for staple formation. The cartridge has a first staple and a first driver. The first staple, once deployed by the first driver and deformed by the first staple pocket, has a formed configuration in which a first portion of a first staple leg and a second portion of a second staple leg are bent relative to a crown and cross the midpoint of the crown and one of the first portion and the second portion overlaps the other of the first portion and the second portion.

Claims (36)

1 . An end effector for stapling and cutting an anatomical structure, the end effector comprising:

(a) an anvil that includes:

(i) a first anvil end, a second anvil end, and an anvil face;

(ii) an anvil blade channel defined by the anvil face, wherein the anvil blade channel is positioned to bisect the anvil face into a first half and a second half; and

(iii) a plurality of staple pockets positioned on the anvil face; and

(b) a cartridge housing a plurality of staples wherein the cartridge includes a cartridge first end, a second cartridge end, and a cartridge face defining a cartridge blade channel, wherein at least one of the anvil face and the cartridge face has a stepped configuration including at least two segments located in different planes from one another, wherein a gap between the anvil and the cartridge increases in the stepped configuration from the first anvil end to the second anvil end, wherein the plurality of staples each have an open leg length and the open leg length of one staple in one of the at least two segments is different from the open leg length of one staple in another of the at least two segments, and

(c) a blade, the blade having a cutting edge, wherein the blade is movable in the anvil blade channel and the cartridge blade channel, wherein the first anvil end is movably coupled with the first cartridge end and the second anvil end is movably coupled with the second cartridge end.

2 . The end effector of claim 1 , wherein a distal end of the end effector is defined by the first anvil end and the cartridge first end and a proximal end of the end effector is defined by the second anvil end and the second cartridge end define a proximal end.

3 . The end effector of claim 1 , wherein the cartridge includes a plurality of staple drivers each having a height and the height of at least two staple drivers are different in a direction from the first cartridge end to the second cartridge end.

4 . The end effector of claim 1 , wherein the open leg length of at least one staple is different from the open leg length of another staple along a length of one of the at least two segments.

5 . The end effector of claim 1 , wherein the open leg lengths of at least some of the plurality of staples are randomly distributed.

6 . The end effector of claim 1 , wherein a distribution of the open leg lengths of the staples is based on a probable tissue thickness along the anatomical structure from the first cartridge end to the second cartridge end.

7 . The end effector of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of staples are divided into at least two zones of staples and the open leg length of one staple in one of the at least two zones differs from the open leg length of another staple in another of the at least two zones.

8 . The end effector of claim 1 , wherein the end effector includes an alignment mechanism configured to facilitate alignment between the anvil and the cartridge as the anvil is moved toward the cartridge.

9 . The end effector of claim 1 , wherein the blade is movable from a first position at the first anvil end to a second position at the second anvil end.

10 . The end effector of claim 1 , wherein the end effector has a first end and a second end, the end effector further comprising a staple driver ramp operably configured to urge the plurality of staples from the cartridge towards the anvil face, wherein the staple driver ramp is movable from the second end of the end effector to the first end of the end effector such that the end effector is operably configured to deploy the plurality of staples from the cartridge as the blade is moved from the second end to the first end.

11 . The end effector of claim 1 , wherein a portion of the anvil face is angled relative to a portion of the cartridge face.

12 . The end effector of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of staples comprises a first staple leg and a second staple leg, and wherein the first staple leg and the second staple leg of at least one of the plurality of staples have different lengths.

13 . The end effector of claim 1 , wherein the cartridge comprises a first plurality of interlocking and separable magazines arranged linearly along a first side of the cartridge blade channel, at least one of the first plurality of separable magazines including a plurality of staple rows, wherein the cartridge comprises a second plurality of interlocking and separable magazines arranged linearly along a second side of the cartridge blade channel.

14 . The end effector of claim 13 , wherein the first plurality of interlocking and separable magazines includes 2 or more magazines.

15 . A method of stapling and cutting the anatomical structure during a surgical medical procedure, the method comprising:

inserting the end effector of claim 1 through a trocar into a patient adjacent the anatomical structure, the cartridge including the plurality of staples;

positioning the anvil and the cartridge on opposing sides of the anatomical structure;

clamping the end effector to the anatomical structure at the first anvil end and the first cartridge end and the second anvil end and the second cartridge end to secure a position of the end effector relative to the anatomical structure; and

actuating the end effector to staple and cut the anatomical structure.

16 . The method of claim 15 , wherein the staples having an open leg length are arranged in rows and columns and the open leg length of each of the staples is the same in each column, and wherein actuating the end effector includes forming a first row of staples and a second row of staples, the staples in the first row having a greater closed leg length than the staples in the second row.

17 . An end effector for stapling and cutting an anatomical structure, the end effector comprising:

(a) an anvil, the anvil comprising;

(i) a first anvil end, a second anvil end, and an anvil face;

(ii) an anvil blade channel defined by the anvil face, wherein the anvil blade channel is positioned to bisect the anvil face into a first half and a second half; and

(iii) a plurality of staple pockets positioned on the anvil face;

(b) a cartridge having a first cartridge end, a second cartridge end, and a cartridge face defining a cartridge blade channel, the cartridge housing a plurality of staples, wherein at least one of the anvil face and the cartridge face has a stepped configuration including at least three segments located in different planes from one another wherein a gap between the anvil and the cartridge increases in the stepped configuration from the first anvil end to the second anvil end, wherein the plurality of staples each have an open leg length and the open leg length of one staple in one of the at least three segments is different from the open leg length of one staple in another of the at least three segments; and
