Abstract

Aspects of the present disclosure relate generally to identifying and displaying traffic lanes that are available for autonomous driving. This information may be displayed to a driver of a vehicle having an autonomous driving mode, in order to inform the driver of where he or she can use the autonomous driving mode. In one example, the display may visually distinguishing between lanes that are available for auto-drive from those that are not. The display may also include an indicator of the position of a lane (autodrive or not) currently occupied by the vehicle. In addition, if that lane is an autodrive lane the display may include information indicating how much further the vehicle may continue in the autonomous driving mode in that particular lane. The display may also display information indicating the remaining autodrive distance in other lanes as well as the lane with the greatest remaining autodrive distance.

Claims (30)

1 . A method comprising:

determining, by one or more processors, a current location of a vehicle being operated by a driver in a manual driving mode;

using, by the one or more processors, the determined location to generate autonomous driving information related to an autonomous driving mode where the driver is able to relinquish control of the vehicle from the manual driving mode to a computer of the vehicle, wherein the autonomous driving information indicates sections of one or more lanes that are currently available for autonomous driving;

generating, by the one or more processors, display information based on the autonomous driving information, the display information including a representation of a section of a lane of the sections of the one or more lanes and an indicator identifying that the section of the lane is currently available for driving in the autonomous driving mode;

displaying, by the one or more processors, the display information to the driver; and

initiating, by the one or more processors, driving in the autonomous driving mode when the vehicle is in the section of the lane available for the driving in the autonomous driving mode.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein using the determined location includes accessing map information identifying locations of the one or more lanes.

3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the map information further indicates that the lane is a lane of a highway.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the display information further includes information indicating a distance available for the autonomous driving mode for the lane.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the display information further includes a representation of a second lane of the one or more lanes that is not available for the autonomous driving mode.

6 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the second lane is not available for the autonomous driving mode as the second lane includes an acceleration lane.

7 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the second lane is not available for the autonomous driving mode as the second lane includes an exit lane.

8 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the second lane is not available for the autonomous driving mode as the second lane includes a merger.

9 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the second lane is not available for the autonomous driving mode as the second lane includes a construction zone.

10 . The method of claim 1 , wherein generating the display information is based on a route to a destination input by the driver.

11 . A system comprising one or more processors configured to:

determine a current location of a vehicle being operated by a driver in a manual driving mode;

use the determined location to generate autonomous driving information related to an autonomous driving mode where the driver is able to relinquish control of the vehicle from the manual driving mode to a computer of the vehicle, wherein the autonomous driving information indicates sections of one or more lanes that are currently available for autonomous driving;

generate display information based on the autonomous driving information, the display information including a representation of a section of a lane of the sections of the one or more lanes and an indicator identifying that the section of the lane is currently available for driving in the autonomous driving mode;

display the display information to the driver; and

initiate driving in the autonomous driving mode when the vehicle is in the section of the lane available for the driving in the autonomous driving mode.

12 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the display information further includes a representation of a second lane of the one or more lanes that is not available for the autonomous driving mode.

13 . The system of claim 12 , further comprising the computer, wherein the computer is configured to restrict initiation of the autonomous driving mode in the second lane.

14 . The system of claim 12 , wherein the second lane is not available for the autonomous driving mode as the second lane includes an acceleration lane.

15 . The system of claim 12 , wherein the second lane is not available for the autonomous driving mode as the second lane includes an exit lane.

16 . The system of claim 12 , wherein the second lane is not available for the autonomous driving mode as the second lane includes a merger.

17 . The system of claim 12 , wherein the second lane is not available for the autonomous driving mode as the second lane includes a construction zone.

18 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the one or more processors are part of the computer.

19 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the display information further includes information indicating a distance available for the autonomous driving mode for the lane.

20 . The system of claim 11 , further comprising the vehicle.
