Abstract

A consumer product that is a portable and, in some cases, a wearable electronic device. The wearable electronic device may have functionalities including: keeping time; monitoring a user's physiological signals and providing health-related information based on those signals; communicating with other electronic devices or services; visually depicting data on a display; gather data form one or more sensors that may be used to initiate, control, or modify operations of the device; determine a location of a touch on a surface of the device and/or an amount of force exerted on the device, and use either or both as input.

21 . An electronic watch comprising:

a touch-sensitive display;

a housing at least partially surrounding the touch-sensitive display;

a front cover positioned over the touch-sensitive display at a front of the housing;

a rear cover positioned at a rear of the housing;

a light source positioned below the rear cover and configured to emit light through the rear cover;

a photodetector positioned below the rear cover and configured to produce a first signal in response to receiving a reflected portion of the light emitted by the light source;

a first electrode positioned at the rear of the housing and configured to produce a second signal;

a second electrode positioned at a side of the housing and configured to produce a third signal; and

a processing unit operably coupled to the photodetector and the first and second electrodes, the processing unit configured to compute a first health metric using the first signal produced by the photodetector and configured to compute a second health metric using the second and third signals produced by the first and second electrodes, respectively.

22 . The electronic watch of claim 21 , wherein:

the light source and the photodetector are configured to operate as a photoplethysmography sensor; and

the first health metric is a heart rate.

23 . The electronic watch of claim 21 , wherein:

the first electrode and the second electrode are configured to operate as an electrocardiographic sensor; and

the second health metric is an electrocardiograph.

24 . The electronic watch of claim 21 , wherein:

the photodetector is a first photodetector of a set of photodetectors; and

the set of photodetectors is arranged around a central region of the rear cover.

25 . The electronic watch of claim 21 , wherein:

the housing defines a rear housing surface;

the rear cover defines a cover surface that extends outward from the rear housing surface of the housing;

the rear cover defines a first window positioned over the light source and a second window positioned over the photodetector; and

the first window and the second window are positioned along the cover surface that extends outward from the rear housing surface of the housing.

26 . The electronic watch of claim 21 , wherein the electronic watch further comprises a temperature sensor configured to measure body temperature.

27 . The electronic watch of claim 21 , wherein:

the electronic watch further comprises a speaker; and

the speaker is configured to produce an audio output in response to a touch detected by the touch-sensitive display.

28 . The electronic watch of claim 21 , further comprising a power interface positioned at the rear of the housing and configured to receive power from an external charging device.

29 . The electronic watch of claim 21 wherein:

the electronic watch further comprises a near-field communication interface configured to communicate wirelessly with an external payment device; and

the electronic watch is configured to authorize a purchase with the external payment device using the near-field communication interface.

30 . A wearable electronic device comprising:

a housing defining a first portion of a rear surface and aside surface of the wearable electronic device;

a front cover coupled to the housing and defining a front surface of the wearable electronic device;

a touch-sensitive display positioned below the front cover;

a rear cover coupled to the housing and defining a second portion of the rear surface of the wearable electronic device;

a light source configured to emit light through the rear cover;

a photodetector configured to detect reflected light in response to the emission of the light by the light source;

a first electrode positioned at the rear surface of the wearable electronic device;

a second electrode positioned at the side surface of the wearable electronic device; and

a processing unit operably coupled to the photodetector and configured to compute a first health metric in response to the reflected light detected by the photodetector and configured to compute a second health metric in response to signals received by the first and second electrodes.

31 . The wearable electronic device of claim 30 , wherein:

the first health metric is a heart rate of a user; and

the second health metric is an electrocardiogram of the user.

32 . The wearable electronic device of claim 30 , wherein the second portion of the rear surface defined by the rear cover protrudes with respect to the first portion of the rear surface defined by the housing.

33 . The wearable electronic device of claim 32 , wherein:

the rear cover defines a set of windows arranged along the second portion of the rear surface;

the light source is positioned below a first window of the set of windows; and

the photodetector is positioned below a second window of the set of windows.

34 . The wearable electronic device of claim 33 , wherein:

the photodetector is a first photodetector of a set of photodetectors; and

each photodetector of the set of photodetectors is positioned below a respective window of the set of windows.

35 . A wearable electronic device comprising:

a housing;

a touch-sensitive display at least partially surrounded by the housing;

a rear cover coupled to the housing;

a light source configured to emit a light through the rear cover;

a photodetector configured to produce a first output in response to an emission of the light by the light source;

a first electrode positioned along a rear surface of the wearable electronic device and configured to produce a second output;

a second electrode positioned along a side surface of the wearable electronic device and configured to produce a third output; and

a processing unit operably coupled to the photodetector, the first electrode, and the second electrode, the processing unit configured to compute a first health metric in response to the first output and a second health metric in response to the second and third outputs.

36 . The wearable electronic device of claim 35 , wherein the photodetector is configured to measure a change in light absorption by a region of skin of a user.

37 . The wearable electronic device of claim 35 , wherein:

the first health metric is a heart rate of a user based on a detected blood perfusion of the user; and

the second health metric is an electrocardiogram based on an electrical response of the user.

38 . The wearable electronic device of claim 35 , wherein the first health metric is a blood oxygenation level of a user.

39 . The wearable electronic device of claim 35 , wherein the first health metric is a respiration rate of a user.

40 . The wearable electronic device of claim 35 , wherein the wearable electronic device further comprises a temperature sensor configured to measure a body temperature of a user.
