Abstract

A shoulder strengthening apparatus includes a base, a shaft having a distal end portion and a proximal end portion pivotably coupled to the base, a hand rest coupled to the distal end portion of the shaft such that the hand rest is configured to move with the shaft relative to the base, and a resistance mechanism configured to restrict movement of the shaft relative to the base.

Claims (33)

1. A shoulder strengthening apparatus comprising:

a base;

a telescopic shaft having a distal end portion and a proximal end portion pivotably coupled to the base;

one or more springs extending between the distal end portion and the proximal end portion of the telescopic shaft such that the telescopic shaft is extendable and compressible;

a hand rest coupled to the distal end portion of the telescopic shaft such that the hand rest is configured to move with the telescopic shaft relative to the base;

a resistance mechanism configured to restrict movement of the telescopic shaft relative to the base; and

a stabilization element comprising an arm rest to support an arm of a user and a support structure coupled at one end to the base and on an opposing end to the arm rest.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a ball-and-socket joint coupling the proximal end portion of the telescopic shaft to the base.

3. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the ball-and-socket joint comprises a ball disposed in a socket, wherein one of the proximal end portion of the telescopic shaft and the base comprises the ball and the other of the proximal end portion and the base comprises the socket.

4. The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the resistance mechanism is an annular structure and comprises an internal thread disposed on an inner surface thereof, the internal threads being configured to mate with an external thread disposed an outer surface of the base such that the resistance mechanism is rotatably coupled to the base, and wherein rotation of the resistance mechanism relative to the base produces relative axial motion between the resistance mechanism and both the base and the telescopic shaft such that the resistance mechanism engages and applies an adjustable frictional force to the ball of the ball-and-socket joint.

5. The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the proximal end portion comprises the ball and the base comprises the socket.

6. The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the base comprises the ball and the proximal end portion comprises the socket.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the resistance mechanism is rotatably coupled to the base and configured to contact the proximal end portion of the telescopic shaft, and wherein contact between the resistance mechanism and the proximal end portion of the telescopic shaft applies an adjustable frictional force to the proximal end portion.

8. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein rotation of the resistance mechanism in a first rotational direction relative to the base increases the adjustable frictional force applied to the telescopic shaft, and wherein rotation of the resistance mechanism in a second rotational direction relative to the base decreases the adjustable frictional force applied to the telescopic shaft.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the resistance mechanism is configured to apply an adjustable frictional force to the proximal end portion of the telescopic shaft.

10. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the telescopic shaft is configured to rotate 360 degrees about a longitudinal axis of the base.

11. A shoulder strengthening apparatus comprising:

a base;

a telescopic shaft having a distal end portion and a proximal end portion, the proximal end portion coupled to the base such that movement of the telescoping shaft relative to the base is restrictable, wherein the telescopic shaft is rotatable around a first axis;

a hand rest coupled to the distal end portion of the telescopic shaft such that the hand rest is configured to move with the telescopic shaft around the first axis, wherein the hand rest is configured to receive a hand of a user; and

a stabilization element comprising an upward extending member, a horizontal member coupled to a lower end of the upward extending member, and an arm rest coupled to an upper end of the upward extending, the arm rest configured to support an arm of the user, wherein the horizontal member is rotatable about the first axis, wherein the arm rest and the upward extending member move together with the horizontal member around the first axis to limit rearward motion of the user's arm during use of the shoulder strengthening apparatus.

12. The shoulder strengthening apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the telescopic shaft is moveable between a compressed state and an extended state, and wherein the telescopic shaft is biased toward an equilibrium state that is between the compressed state and the extended state.

13. The shoulder strengthening apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the telescopic shaft comprises a biasing member for biasing the telescopic shaft toward the equilibrium state.

14. The shoulder strengthening apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the biasing member comprises a spring.

15. The shoulder strengthening apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the telescopic shaft comprises a lock for retaining the telescopic member in one of the compressed state or the extended state.

16. The shoulder strengthening apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the hand rest is rotatable around a second axis corresponding to a longitudinal axis of the telescopic shaft.

17. The shoulder strengthening apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the arm rest is rotatable around a third axis corresponding to a longitudinal axis of the upward extending member.

18. The shoulder strengthening apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the telescopic shaft is a first telescopic shaft and the upward extending member of the stabilization element is second telescopic shaft that is height adjustable for alignment of the arm relative the hand of the user when received in the hand rest.

19. A shoulder strengthening apparatus comprising:

a base;

a first telescopic shaft having a distal end portion and a proximal end portion, the proximal end portion of the first telescopic shaft coupled to the base such that movement of the first telescopic shaft relative to the base is restrictable, wherein the first telescopic shaft is rotatable around a first axis;

a hand rest coupled to the distal end portion of the first telescopic shaft such that the hand rest is configured to move with the first telescopic shaft around the first axis, wherein the hand rest is rotatable around a second axis corresponding to a longitudinal axis of the first telescopic shaft; and

a stabilization element comprising a second telescopic shaft having a distal end portion and a proximal end portion, a horizontal member coupled to a proximal end portion of the second telescopic shaft, and an arm rest coupled to the distal end portion of second telescopic shaft, wherein the horizontal member is rotatable about the first axis, wherein the arm rest and the second telescopic shaft move together with the horizontal member around the first axis, wherein the arm rest is rotatable around a third axis corresponding to a longitudinal axis of the second telescopic shaft.
