Abstract

In certain embodiments, an electric vehicle includes a front cage, a rear floor, an intermediate section, a utility cabinet, and a flatbed. In other embodiments, an electric vehicle includes a front cage, a rear floor, an intermediate section, and a flatbed. In some embodiments, the front cage at least partially defines an operator cabin, the rear floor is positioned rearward of the front cage in a longitudinal direction, and the intermediate section is disposed at least partially between the front cage and the rear floor in the longitudinal direction.

Claims (53)

1. A method of establishing a utility space of an electric vehicle, the method comprising:

defining an operator cabin of the electric vehicle at least partially by a front cage of the vehicle;

defining a flatbed of the electric vehicle positioned rearward of the front cage in a longitudinal direction that is open to the ambient environment;

defining an intermediate section of the electric vehicle disposed at least partially between the front cage and the flatbed in the longitudinal direction, wherein defining the intermediate section of the electric vehicle includes interconnecting a roof of the front cage with at least one sidewall of the flatbed using at least one reinforcement beam of the intermediate section; and

defining the utility space at least partially by the front cage, the at least one reinforcement beam, and the flatbed such that the utility space is located outside the operator cabin.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

forming a monocoque of the electric vehicle that comprises the front cage, the flatbed, and the intermediate section; and

supporting at least one electric motor of the electric vehicle using the monocoque.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

positioning a utility cabinet including a plurality of drawers in the flatbed; and

defining the utility space at least partially by the front cage, the at least one reinforcement beam, the utility cabinet, and the flatbed.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein interconnecting the roof with the at least one sidewall of the flatbed using the at least one reinforcement beam includes arranging the at least one reinforcement beam at an obtuse angle relative to the at least one sidewall.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein interconnecting the roof with the at least one sidewall of the flatbed using the at least one reinforcement beam includes interconnecting the roof with a first sidewall of the flatbed using a first reinforcement beam of the intermediate section and interconnecting the roof with a second sidewall of the flatbed using a second reinforcement beam of the intermediate section.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein defining the intermediate section of the electric vehicle includes establishing an alcove that is disposed at least partially between the front cage and the flatbed in the longitudinal direction and that provides an opening closed off from the operator cabin.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein establishing the alcove includes at least partially defining the opening using the at least one reinforcement beam.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

defining the flatbed of the electric vehicle includes forming a first sidewall and a first guide rail that extends away from the first sidewall in a vertical direction to define a first slot between the first sidewall and the first guide rail; and

the utility space is at least partially enclosed by the first sidewall and the first guide rail.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein:

defining the flatbed of the electric vehicle includes forming a second sidewall and a second guide rail that extends away from the second sidewall in the vertical direction to define a second slot between the second sidewall and the second guide rail; and

the utility space is at least partially enclosed by the second sidewall and the second guide rail.

10. A method of establishing a utility space of an electric vehicle, the method comprising:

defining an operator cabin of the electric vehicle at least partially by a front cage of the vehicle;

defining a flatbed of the electric vehicle positioned rearward of the front cage in a longitudinal direction that is open to the ambient environment;

defining an intermediate section of the electric vehicle disposed at least partially between the front cage and the flatbed in the longitudinal direction, wherein defining the intermediate section of the electric vehicle includes establishing an alcove that is disposed at least partially between the front cage and the flatbed in the longitudinal direction and that provides an opening closed off from the operator cabin, and wherein the alcove extends in a lateral direction through an exterior wall of the intermediate section to define an exterior compartment accessible from outside the vehicle; and

defining the utility space at least partially by the front cage, the intermediate section, and the flatbed such that the utility space is located outside the operator cabin and is in fluid communication with the opening provided by the alcove.

11. The method of claim 10 , further comprising:

forming a monocoque of the electric vehicle that comprises the front cage, the flatbed, and the intermediate section; and

supporting at least one electric motor of the electric vehicle using the monocoque.

12. The method of claim 10 , further comprising:

positioning a utility cabinet including a plurality of drawers in the flatbed; and

defining the utility space at least partially by the front cage, the intermediate section, the utility cabinet, and the flatbed.

13. The method of claim 10 , wherein defining the intermediate section of the electric vehicle includes interconnecting a roof of the front cage with at least one sidewall of the flatbed using at least one reinforcement beam of the intermediate section.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein defining the utility space includes defining the utility space at least partially by the front cage, the at least one reinforcement beam, and the flatbed.

15. The method of claim 10 , wherein:

defining the flatbed of the electric vehicle includes forming a first sidewall and a first guide rail that extends away from the first sidewall in a vertical direction to define a first slot between the first sidewall and the first guide rail; and

the utility space is at least partially enclosed by the first sidewall and the first guide rail.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein:

defining the flatbed of the electric vehicle includes forming a second sidewall and a second guide rail that extends away from the second sidewall in the vertical direction to define a second slot between the second sidewall and the second guide rail; and

the utility space is at least partially enclosed by the second sidewall and the second guide rail.

17. The method of claim 10 , wherein:

defining the intermediate section of the electric vehicle includes interconnecting a roof of the front cage with at least one sidewall of the flatbed using at least one reinforcement beam of the intermediate section; and

interconnecting the roof with the at least one sidewall of the flatbed using the at least one reinforcement beam includes interconnecting the roof with a first sidewall of the flatbed using a first reinforcement beam of the intermediate section and interconnecting the roof with a second sidewall of the flatbed using a second reinforcement beam of the intermediate section.

18. The method of claim 10 , wherein:

defining the intermediate section of the electric vehicle includes interconnecting a roof of the front cage with at least one sidewall of the flatbed using at least one reinforcement beam of the intermediate section; and

interconnecting the roof with the at least one sidewall of the flatbed using the at least one reinforcement beam includes arranging the at least one reinforcement beam at an obtuse angle relative to the at least one sidewall.
