Abstract

Disclosed are procedures and examples of feedback messages that enable a user device to request transmission adjustments in 5G and 6G. The feedback message may indicate a selected beam direction, a power adjustment request, a grant request, and an acknowledgement, among other things. For example, a downlink message may include several beam test signals, each transmitted in a different direction, and the user device can indicate, in the feedback message, which test signal was best received. Thus the feedback enables the base station to adjust its beam toward the user device upon each message. In addition, the user device can determine the amplitude or signal quality received in the favored test signal, and can then include an incremental power adjustment request in the feedback message. In addition, the user device can request a retransmission and/or an uplink grant, and can optionally provide a BSR as well, in some embodiments.

Claims (52)

1. A method for a user device, of a wireless network comprising a base station, to provide feedback to the base station, the method comprising:

a) receiving a downlink message comprising integer Nsig test signals, each test signal occupying a single resource element;

b) measuring a received signal quality of each test signal;

c) determining that a particular test signal, of the Nsig test signals, has a highest received signal quality;

d) determining whether the highest received signal quality exceeds a predetermined minimum threshold;

e) transmitting, to the base station, a feedback message indicating the particular test signal, and further indicating whether the received signal quality of the particular test signal exceeds the predetermined minimum threshold, wherein the feedback message further comprises an indication that the downlink message was faulted, and an indication that retransmission of the downlink message is not requested.

2. A method for a user device, of a wireless network comprising a base station, to provide feedback to the base station, the method comprising:

a) receiving a downlink message comprising integer Nsig test signals, each test signal occupying a single resource element;

b) measuring a received signal quality of each test signal;

c) determining that a particular test signal, of the Nsig test signals, has a highest received signal quality;

d) determining whether the highest received signal quality exceeds a predetermined minimum threshold;

e) transmitting, to the base station, a feedback message indicating the particular test signal, and further indicating whether the received signal quality of the particular test signal exceeds the predetermined minimum threshold, wherein the feedback message further comprises integer Nsig additional test signals, each additional test signal occupying a single resource element, and each additional test signal transmitted in a different direction.

3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising receiving an additional feedback message from the base station, the additional feedback message indicating which of the additional test signals was received by the base station with a best signal quality.

4. A method for a user device, of a wireless network comprising a base station, to provide feedback to the base station, the method comprising:

a) receiving a downlink message comprising integer Nsig test signals, each test signal occupying a single resource element;

b) measuring a received signal quality of each test signal;

c) determining that a particular test signal, of the Nsig test signals, has a highest received signal quality;

d) determining whether the highest received signal quality exceeds a predetermined minimum threshold;

e) transmitting, to the base station, a feedback message indicating the particular test signal, and further indicating whether the received signal quality of the particular test signal exceeds the predetermined minimum threshold, wherein:

i) the feedback message further includes a buffer status report and an identification code of the downlink message; and

ii) the feedback message occupies exactly four resource elements.

5. A method for a user device, of a wireless network comprising a base station, to provide feedback to the base station, the method comprising:

a) receiving a downlink message comprising integer Nsig test signals, each test signal occupying a single resource element;

b) measuring a received signal quality of each test signal;

c) determining that a particular test signal, of the Nsig test signals, has a highest received signal quality;

d) determining whether the highest received signal quality exceeds a predetermined minimum threshold;

e) transmitting, to the base station, a feedback message indicating the particular test signal, and further indicating whether the received signal quality of the particular test signal exceeds the predetermined minimum threshold, further comprising:

i) transmitting, on a contention-based channel configured for grant-free transmissions, a request for beam adjustment;

ii) receiving the downlink message on the contention-based channel; and

iii)transmitting the feedback message on the contention-based channel.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the contention-based channel comprises at least one of:

a) a random access channel of the base station;

b) a channel allocated by the base station for grant-free communications; and

c) a channel allocated by the base station for user devices to request beam adjustment.

7. The method of claim 5 , wherein:

a) the request for beam adjustment comprises an identification code of the user device; and

b) the downlink message comprises the identification code of the user device.

8. A method for a base station, of a wireless network that comprises a user device, to adjust a downlink transmission parameter, the method comprising:

a) transmitting, to the user device, a downlink message comprising or concatenated with integer Nsig test signals, each test signal occupying a single resource element, wherein each of the Nsig test signals is transmitted using a different value of a transmission parameter;

b) receiving a feedback message from the user device;

c) determining, from the feedback message, which particular test signal, of the Nsig test signals, was received with a highest signal quality; and

d) determining, from the feedback message, whether the highest signal quality is below a predetermined lower threshold, further comprising:

i) determining, according to the feedback message, whether the downlink message was received correctly or faulted;

ii) when the downlink message was faulted, determining, according to the feedback message, whether a retransmission of the downlink message is requested;

iii) determining whether the feedback message comprises a request for an uplink grant; and

iv) when the feedback message comprises a request for an uplink grant, determining whether the feedback message comprises a buffer status report.

9. A method for a base station, of a wireless network that comprises a user device, to adjust a downlink transmission parameter, the method comprising:
