Abstract

Bearing assemblies, apparatuses, systems, and methods include bearing assemblies where one of the bearing assemblies may include angled bearing surfaces having a planar shape.

Claims (31)

1. A bearing assembly, comprising:

a first bearing assembly comprising:

a first support ring; and

one or more first bearing elements coupled to the first support ring, the one or more first bearing elements having bearing surfaces each exhibiting a partially spheroid convex shape; and

a second bearing assembly comprising:

a second support ring; and

second bearing elements having bearing surfaces and each being coupled to the second support ring, the bearing surfaces of the second bearing elements each exhibiting a planar shape, the second bearing elements positioned at an oblique angle relative to an intended axis of rotation of a portion of the bearing assembly, wherein the second bearing elements are positioned substantially symmetrically about a partially conical surface substantially centered about the intended axis of rotation, wherein the bearing surfaces of the second bearing elements are configured to engage with the bearing surfaces of the one or more first bearing elements, wherein engagement of the bearing surfaces of the one or more first bearing elements with the bearing surfaces of the second bearing elements is configured to primarily support a load applied between the first bearing assembly and the second bearing assembly.

2. The bearing assembly of claim 1 , wherein the partially conical surface defines a faceted surface with the planar shape of the at least some of the second bearing elements each being positioned at an angle relative to each other.

3. The bearing assembly of claim 2 , wherein the planar shape of the at least some of the second bearing elements define an overall nonelliptical shape along the second bearing assembly upon which the one or more first bearing elements are configured to travel.

4. The bearing assembly of claim 3 , wherein the nonelliptical shape comprises a polygonal curve.

5. The bearing assembly of claim 1 , wherein the bearing assembly is formed as a thrust bearing.

6. The bearing assembly of claim 5 , wherein the partially conical surface defined by the second bearing assembly defines a partially conical opening in which a portion of the first bearing assembly is received.

7. The bearing assembly of claim 6 , wherein a majority of the first bearing assembly is positioned outside of the partially conical opening defined by the second bearing assembly.

8. The bearing assembly of claim 1 , wherein each of the second bearing elements are positioned on the second support ring at a substantially similar or the same oblique angle relative to the intended axis of rotation.

The bearing assembly of claim 1 , wherein the partially spheroid convex shape of the one or more first bearing elements is configured to contact the planar shape of the second bearing elements only at a rounded apex of the partially spheroid convex shape of the one or more first bearing elements.

The bearing assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first bearing assembly is configured to rotate relative to the second bearing assembly about the intended axis of rotation, and wherein the first bearing assembly and the second bearing assembly enable the first bearing assembly to rotate in a direction about another axis that is transverse to the intended axis of rotation.

11. A bearing assembly, comprising:

a first bearing assembly comprising a first support structure with one or more first bearing elements coupled to the first support structure, the first bearing elements each having a bearing surface exhibiting a convex surface; and

a second bearing assembly comprising a second support structure and second bearing elements coupled to the second support structure, the second bearing elements each having a bearing surface exhibiting a planar surface, the second bearing elements positioned at an oblique angle relative to an intended axis of rotation of the bearing assembly, the second bearing elements configured to engage with bearing surfaces of the one or more first bearing elements, wherein the first bearing assembly and the second bearing assembly are configured to primarily contact along a single path about the intended axis of rotation of the bearing assembly at a location between a rounded apex of the convex surface of the bearing surface of the first bearing elements and the planar surface of the bearing surface of the second bearing elements.

The bearing assembly of claim 11 , wherein the bearing surfaces of the one or more first bearing elements are configured to contact the bearing surfaces of the second bearing elements and to travel along the planar surface of the second bearing elements in any radial direction of the planar surface.

13. The bearing assembly of claim 11 , wherein the bearing surfaces of the one or more first bearing elements each exhibit a partially spherical convex shape.

14. The bearing assembly of claim 11 , wherein the planar surface of the bearing surfaces of the second bearing elements collectively define a faceted substantially frustoconical shape.

15. The bearing assembly of claim 14 , wherein the planar surface of the bearing surfaces of the second bearing elements define an overall polygonal shape along the second bearing assembly upon which the one or more first bearing elements are configured to travel.

16. The bearing assembly of claim 11 , wherein the one or more first bearing elements are positioned substantially at the same oblique angle relative to the intended axis of rotation.

17. A method of supporting an axial load with a thrust bearing assembly, the method comprising:

positioning a first bearing assembly comprising one or more first bearing elements coupled to a first support structure at least partially within a second bearing assembly comprising second bearing elements coupled to a second support structure, each bearing surface of the second bearing elements exhibiting a planar shape oriented at an oblique angle relative to an axis of rotation;

moving the one or more first bearing elements relative to the second bearing elements; and

contacting the one or more first bearing elements against one or more planar shapes of the bearing surfaces of the second bearing elements, the first bearing assembly and the second bearing assembly primarily contacting along a single path defined between the one or more first bearing elements and the bearing surfaces having the planar shape of the second bearing elements.

18. The method of claim 17 , further comprising transferring the axial load from the one or more first bearing elements to the second bearing elements in a direction at least partially along the axis of rotation.

19. The method of claim 17 , further comprising rotating the first bearing assembly rotates relative to the second bearing assembly about another axis that is transverse to the axis of rotation.

20. The method of claim 17 , further comprising contacting the bearing surfaces having the planar shape of the second bearing elements with an apex of a rounded bearing surface of the one or more first bearing elements.
