Abstract

A sway bar system is described. The sway bar system includes a sway bar having a first end and a second end. An electronically controlled connector to provide a remotely controllable physical connection and disconnection capability between a first location on a vehicle and the first end of the sway bar; and the second end of the sway bar coupled to a second location on the vehicle.

Claims (48)

1. A sway bar system comprising:

a sway bar having a first end and a second end;

an electronically controlled connector to provide a remotely controllable physical connection and disconnection capability between a first location on a vehicle and said first end of said sway bar;

said second end of said sway bar coupled to a second location on said vehicle;

a graphical user interface (GUI) communicatively coupled with said vehicle and to receive a user input, said user input to change a vehicle suspension mode; and

a control system to receive said user input from said GUI and automatically connect or disconnect said electronically controlled connector.

2. The sway bar system of claim 1 , wherein said control system further comprises:

sensors configured to provide sensor input to said control system.

3. The sway bar system of claim 2 , wherein said sensors are selected from the group consisting of: accelerometer, sway sensor, suspension change sensor, visual identification technology sensor, a driver input monitor, steering wheel turning sensor, an inertial gyroscope, a magnetometer, a single spectrum camera, a multi spectrum camera, damper sensor, vibration sensor, vehicle roll sensor, vehicle speed sensor, an inertial measurement unit, external condition sensor, and an attitude and heading reference system.

4. The sway bar system of claim 2 , wherein said control system further comprises:

a processor, wherein said processor receives said sensor input from said sensors.

5. The sway bar system of claim 2 , wherein said control system further comprises:

a processor, wherein said processor receives said user input and said sensor input, said processor utilizing said user input and said sensor input to determine whether to automatically connect or disconnect said electronically controlled connector.

6. The sway bar system of claim 2 , wherein said control system further comprises:

a processor, wherein said processor receives said vehicle suspension mode and said sensor input, said processor utilizing said vehicle suspension mode and said sensor input to determine whether to automatically connect or disconnect said electronically controlled connector.

7. The sway bar system of claim 2 , wherein said control system further comprises:

a processor, wherein said processor receives said user input and said sensor input, said processor utilizing said user input and said sensor input to automatically select said vehicle suspension mode.

8. The sway bar system of claim 7 , wherein said processor further receives user preferences and said processor utilizes said user preferences, said user input, and said sensor input to automatically select said vehicle suspension mode.

9. The sway bar system of claim 1 , wherein said control system further comprises:

a processor.

10. The sway bar system of claim 9 , wherein said processor is a logic control unit (LCU).

11. The sway bar system of claim 9 , wherein said processor receives said user input from said GUI.

12. The sway bar system of claim 9 , wherein said processor automatically automatically selects said vehicle suspension mode based on one or more characteristics selected from a group consisting of: a user preference, a vehicle speed, a maneuver, and a ride type.

13. The sway bar system of claim 1 , wherein said vehicle suspension mode is selected from the group consisting of: highway mode, off-road mode, mixed mode, rock climbing mode, racing mode, performance mode, sport mode, and wet mode.

14. The sway bar system of claim 1 , wherein said electronically controlled connector comprises:

a linear actuator to provide said remotely controllable physical connection and disconnection capability.

15. The sway bar system of claim 1 , wherein said electronically controlled connector comprises:

a rotary actuator to provide said remotely controllable physical connection and disconnection capability.

16. A sway bar system comprising:

a sway bar having a first end and a second end;

an electronically controlled connector to provide a remotely controllable physical connection and disconnection capability between a first location on a vehicle and said first end of said sway bar;

said second end of said sway bar coupled to a second location on said vehicle;

a graphical user interface (GUI) communicatively coupled with said vehicle and to receive a user input, said user input to change a vehicle suspension mode;

an electronically controlled damper link, said electronically controlled damper link coupled between said first location on said vehicle and said electronically controlled connector; and

a control system to receive said user input from said GUI and automatically connect or disconnect said electronically controlled connector.

17. The sway bar system of claim 16 , wherein said electronically controlled damper link comprises:

a damper cylinder, said damper cylinder having a damper cylinder volume;

a damping piston axially moveable within said damper cylinder;

a shaft fixedly coupled to said damping piston;

a fluid reserve cylinder, said fluid reserve cylinder comprising:

a fluid reservoir chamber;

a gas chamber; and

an internal floating piston fluidly separating said fluid reservoir chamber and said gas chamber; and

a valve fluidly coupled to said damper cylinder and said fluid reserve cylinder, said valve having a flow area wherein a ratio of said damper cylinder volume to said flow area of said valve is adjustable.

18. The sway bar system of claim 16 , wherein said control system further comprises:

a processor, said processor controlling whether said electronically controlled damper link is physically coupled with or physically disconnected from said electronically controlled connector.

19. The sway bar system of claim 18 , wherein said processor utilizes sensor input and said user input to determine whether said electronically controlled damper link is physically coupled with or physically disconnected from said electronically controlled connector.

20. The sway bar system of claim 18 , wherein said processor automatically connects or disconnects said electronically controlled connector and said electronically controlled damper link based on one or more characteristics selected from a group consisting of: a user preference, a vehicle speed, a maneuver, and a ride type.
