Abstract

Methods and systems for determining usage are described. Initially, site-centric data and panel-centric data are accessed and pre-processed. Initial usage measurement data is determined based on the pre-processed site-centric data. One or more adjustment factors are determined based on the pre-processed panel-centric data. The one or more adjustment factors are applied to the initial usage measurement data to generate an adjusted usage measurement data. Reports based on the adjusted usage measurement data are generated.

Claims (72)

1. A method for determining shared device activity, the method comprising:

accessing, by a reporting server, activity data of access to content that is stored on a collection server, the activity data being received based on beacon instructions included in the content and executed by content-presenting applications on devices from which content accesses originate, the beacon instructions being configured to cause a device executing the beacon instructions to send a message to the collection server, and the activity data comprising an IP address of the device associated with each access to the content;

separating, by the reporting server, the activity data into sessions, each session representing a time period during which it is estimated that a single user used the device;

determining, by the reporting server, an estimated percentage of users that use shared devices;

dividing, by the reporting server, based on the IP addresses, the activity data into sub-orgs;

assigning, by the reporting server, a probability to each sub-org indicative of whether activity associated with the respective sub-org originated from a shared device;

identifying, by the reporting server, one or more sub-orgs as being associated with the shared devices;

associating, by the reporting server, activity associated with the identified one or more sub-orgs as originating from the shared devices; and

generating, by the reporting server, one or more usage reports based on the activity originating from the shared devices.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein identifying the one or more sub-orgs as being associated with the shared devices comprises identifying the one or more sub-orgs that are assigned a probability greater than the estimated percentage of users that use the shared devices.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein identifying the one or more sub-orgs as being associated with the shared devices comprises identifying the one or more sub-orgs that are assigned a probability greater than a threshold percentage.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein accessing the activity data of access to the content comprises accessing the activity data of access to the content during a time period or in a geographic region.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining the estimated percentage of users that use the shared devices comprises receiving, from a third-party measurement source, the estimated percentage of users that use the shared devices.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining the estimated percentage of users that use the shared devices comprises determining the estimated percentage of users that use the shared devices in a geographic region.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein dividing the activity data into the sub-orgs comprises analyzing one or more IP address blocks of the two or three most significant octets of the IP addresses.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein assigning the probability to each sub-org is based on a name of an organization associated with the one or more IP address blocks.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein assigning the probability to each sub-org is based on levels of activity during different times of day.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein higher levels of activity outside of business hours are indicative of a higher probability that the activity associated with the respective sub-org originated from a shared device.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein identifying the one or more sub-orgs as being associated with the shared devices comprises sorting the sub-orgs based on the probability of whether activity associated with the respective sub-org originated from a shared device.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein generating the one or more usage reports based on the activity originating from shared devices comprises determining at least one of:

a number of the shared devices at a particular location,

a number of users using the shared devices at a particular location,

a number of users using the shared devices during a time period, or

a number of unique visitors to content.

13. The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining, based on the activity data separated into sessions, a total number of the shared devices and a number of users that used the shared devices.

14. The method of claim 13 , further comprising determining, based on the activity originating from the shared devices, the total number of the shared devices, and the number of users that used the shared devices, a number of unique visitors to content.

15. A method for determining shared device activity, the method comprising:

accessing, by a reporting server, activity data of access to content that is stored on a collection server, the activity data being received based on beacon instructions included in the content and executed by content-presenting applications on devices from which content accesses originate, the beacon instructions being configured to cause a device executing the beacon instructions to send a message to the collection server, and the activity data comprising an IP address of the device associated with each access to the content;

determining, by the reporting server, an estimated percentage of users that use shared devices;

dividing, by the reporting server, based on the IP addresses, the activity data into sub-orgs;

assigning, by the reporting server, a probability to each sub-org indicative of whether activity associated with the respective sub-org originated from a shared device;

identifying, by the reporting server, one or more sub-orgs as being associated with the shared devices by identifying the one or more sub-orgs that are assigned the probability greater than the estimated percentage of users that use the shared devices;

associating, by the reporting server, activity associated with the identified one or more sub-orgs as originating from the shared devices; and

generating, by the reporting server, one or more usage reports based on the activity originating from the shared devices.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein accessing the activity data of access to the content comprises accessing the activity data of access to the content during a time period or in a geographic region.

17. The method of claim 15 , wherein dividing the activity data into the sub-orgs comprises analyzing one or more IP address blocks of the two or three most significant octets of the IP addresses.
